The Condo She Tried To Steal / Chapter 12 / 15

Chapter 12: The Deal Richard Refused

I couldn’t speak.

The restaurant around me continued moving.

People laughing.

Glasses clinking.

Servers walking between tables.

Normal life continuing.

But my world had stopped.

“Richard?””

Harper nodded.

“Yes.””

I stared at her.

“You expect me to believe my husband worked with Evan?””

“No.””

Her answer surprised me.

“I expect you to believe he fought him.””

That was different.

Very different.

“Explain.””

Harper took a breath.

“Evan approached Richard years ago.””

“Why?””

“Because of the condo.””

I frowned.

“The condo?””

“He knew its value would increase.””

I almost laughed.

“Richard would never sell it.””

“I know.””

She looked down.

“That’s why Evan changed tactics.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“What tactics?””

“Relationships.””

The word chilled me.

Harper continued.

“Evan looked at your family. He knew Caleb was struggling financially. He knew I wanted a better lifestyle.””

“And he found you.””

“Yes.””

I watched her carefully.

“Why should I believe you?””

“You shouldn’t.””

That answer caught me off guard.

Harper removed her sunglasses.

“I lied to you for months.””

The honesty was uncomfortable.

“But Evan lied to me for years.””

I waited.

She looked exhausted.

“After Richard rejected him, Evan started looking for another way.””

“Through Caleb.””

“Yes.””

“And you.””

“Yes.””

I thought about everything.

The emails.

The fake documents.

The pressure.

The hotel.

“You helped him.””

Her eyes filled.

“Yes.””

The admission was quiet.

But it mattered.

“Why?””

She looked at me.

“Because I was desperate.””

I didn’t forgive her.

But I listened.

“I thought I could get ahead of it. I thought if Caleb owned the condo someday, we’d be safe.””

“You thought stealing from me would protect your family?””

She looked away.

“I know how it sounds.””

“It sounds exactly like what it was.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

For the first time, Harper wasn’t fighting.

She wasn’t defending.

She was admitting.

“Then why tell me now?””

She looked at her hands.

“Because Evan betrayed me.””

“How?””

“He has the original documents.””

My blood ran cold.

“What original documents?””

“The ones showing everything.””

“Everything?””

“Yes.””

“Why would he keep them?””

“Insurance.””

Of course.

People like Evan didn’t create crimes.

They created leverage.

“He told me if I turned against him, he would release everything.””

I studied her face.

“And now you’re afraid.””

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised me.

Then my phone rang.

Marcus.

I answered.

“Eleanor.””

His voice was urgent.

“Where are you?””

I stood immediately.

“At the restaurant.””

“You need to leave.””

My heart started racing.

“Why?””

“Because Evan Cross just filed an emergency claim against your condo.””

I froze.

“What?””

“He’s trying to freeze the property.””

Harper looked at me.

She knew.

“What happened?””

I looked at her.

Marcus continued.

“He’s claiming he has legal authority connected to the property.””

“But he doesn’t.””

“I know.””

“Then why worry?””

A pause.

“Because he attached Richard’s name.””

My blood turned cold.

Again.

Richard.

Always Richard.

Even after death, Evan was using my husband against me.

“I’m coming.””

I hung up.

Harper stood.

“Is it him?””

“Yes.””

She looked terrified.

“He’s moving faster than I thought.””

I grabbed my purse.

“Where are the original documents?””

She hesitated.

Then whispered:

“I know where he keeps them.””

I stopped.

“Where?””

She looked directly at me.

“Your old family house.””

I froze.

The house I sold after Richard died.

The house filled with decades of memories.

The house Harper had never visited after the funeral.

“Why would he keep them there?””

“Because Evan knew something.””

“What?””

Harper swallowed.

“He knew you would never willingly give up the one place connected to Richard.””

The next morning, Marcus, Caleb, and I stood outside my old house.

The place looked smaller than I remembered.

But the memories were enormous.

The front door opened slowly.

Inside, everything was covered in dust.

Until we reached the basement.

There was a hidden room behind an old storage shelf.

Marcus looked at the lock.

“This was added recently.””

Caleb stared.

“By who?””

Nobody answered.

Because we all knew.

Marcus opened the door.

Inside was a single table.

A stack of files.

And one photograph.

I picked it up.

It showed Richard.

Standing beside Evan.

But this time, there was another person.

Someone I recognized immediately.

Someone who had been missing from the entire story.

My hands began shaking.

Because the person standing beside them was not Caleb.

Not Harper.

Not Dennis.

It was the person who had helped Richard uncover everything.

The person who knew the truth from the beginning.

And underneath the photograph was a handwritten note.
