Chapter 14: The Last Letter From Richard
I read Richard’s letter alone.
Not because I wanted privacy.
Because I needed space to break.
The past few weeks had taken pieces of me one by one.
Harper.
Caleb.
Evan.
Margaret.
Every person I loved had carried a secret.
And now my husband, the one person I trusted completely, was telling me there was one more truth waiting.
I unfolded the paper.
My darling Eleanor,
If you are reading this, then I failed to protect you from something I saw coming.
I stopped.
My eyes filled.
Richard always believed he could fix things.
He believed preparation could prevent pain.
But some pain didn’t come from disasters.
Some came from people.
I continued.
I discovered what Evan was doing before my illness became serious. I discovered he was approaching our family through financial pressure and emotional manipulation.
My hands tightened.
But the person who concerned me most was not Evan.
It was Caleb.
I closed my eyes.
Not because I was angry.
Because I was afraid of what came next.
Caleb has a good heart, but he is vulnerable. He wants to provide. He wants to be successful. He wants people to believe he is stronger than he feels.
That vulnerability made him easy to influence.
I wiped my eyes.
Richard wasn’t defending him.
He was explaining him.
There was a difference.
I kept reading.
But Eleanor, there is something you must know.
Caleb did not begin this.
He was not the person who planned against you.
He was used.
I looked up.
Marcus was right.
Caleb wasn’t innocent.
But he wasn’t the architect.
The letter continued.
The person who benefited most from this plan was someone else.
Someone who understood our family.
Someone who knew exactly where to apply pressure.
My heart raced.
I already knew.
But I needed to see it.
The final truth was not Harper.
It was Evan.
And it was not the theft of the condo that worried me.
It was what he was trying to hide.
I frowned.
Hide?
I read faster.
Evan did not want our property.
He wanted something connected to our past.
Something I discovered years ago.
Something worth far more than the condo.
I stopped.
“What?””
Marcus, who had been waiting outside, entered when he heard my voice.
“What happened?””
I handed him the letter.
He read silently.
Then looked up.
“What did Richard discover?””
I shook my head.
“I don’t know.””
But then I remembered.
Years ago.
Before Miami.
Before the condo.
Before retirement.
Richard had worked on a business deal.
A small company investment.
Something he never discussed much.
He always said:
“Some things are better left buried.””
At the time, I thought he meant mistakes.
Now I wondered if he meant danger.
Marcus searched through the basement files again.
Then he found another folder.
Inside was an old business agreement.
The company name made me gasp.
Crosswell Holdings.
Evan’s company.
But Richard’s name was there too.
“What is this?””
Marcus read carefully.
“Your husband was an investor.””
“In Evan?””
“No.””
He looked closer.
“In a company Evan later acquired.””
I felt a chill.
“So Richard knew him before.””
“Yes.””
And suddenly everything connected.
Evan wasn’t interested in my condo.
Not originally.
He was interested in something Richard had.
Something Richard protected.
“Find the records,” Marcus said.
We searched for hours.
Finally, hidden behind the old documents, we found a small drive.
A password protected drive.
Marcus looked at me.
“Do you know the password?””
I stared at it.
Then smiled sadly.
“Richard loved anniversaries.””
I entered the date of our wedding.
The drive opened.
Inside was one folder.
One video.
Recorded by Richard.
I clicked play.
His face appeared on the screen.
Older.
Tired.
But still my Richard.
“Eleanor.””
I covered my mouth.
Hearing his voice was almost too much.
“If you are watching this, then the situation became worse than I hoped.””
He looked directly into the camera.
“I need you to understand something.””
A pause.
“The condo was never the target.””
My breath caught.
“The target was the evidence.””
Marcus leaned closer.
Richard continued.
“Years ago, Evan Cross committed fraud against investors. I discovered it and kept records. I believed the law would handle it.””
His expression changed.
“I was wrong.””
The video continued.
“Evan built his entire life around making sure those records disappeared.””
I stared.
“So that’s why.””
Marcus nodded.
Richard looked into the camera again.
“Eleanor, if Evan ever comes after you, it means he believes you have what he needs.””
The screen went black.
The video ended.
Nobody spoke.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Mrs. Bennett.””
Evan.
His voice was calm.
“You found Richard’s recording.””
I froze.
“How do you know?””
A pause.
Then:
“Because I helped him make it.””
My blood ran cold.
“What?””
“You don’t know the whole story.””
“Then tell me.””
“I’m not the only person Richard left evidence against.””
Silence.
“What does that mean?””
His voice lowered.
“It means the person you trust most may be the one who helped destroy your family.””
The call ended.
I looked at Marcus.
Then Caleb.
Then Margaret.
Because suddenly, one question remained.
May you like
Who was Richard warning me about?
And why did everyone except me know the answer?
