Chapter 14: The Woman Who Came Back for Justice
The footsteps coming from downstairs were slow.
Deliberate.
Confident.
Not the footsteps of someone who was lost.
Not someone who was afraid.
Someone who knew exactly where they were going.
Victoria took a step backward.
For the first time since I met her, she looked small.
“Who is that?”” my father asked.
Nobody answered.
The footsteps stopped.
Then a woman appeared at the bottom of the stairs.
She looked around sixty.
Her hair was silver.
Her face was tired.
But her eyes were sharp.
And when she looked at Victoria…
I saw recognition.
“You.””
Victoria whispered.
The woman smiled.
“Hello, Victoria.””
My mother covered her mouth.
“No.””
Everyone turned.
“Mom?”” I asked.
My mother looked like she had seen another ghost.
“Who is she?””
The woman walked into the room.
“My name is Claire.””
She looked at Elena.
“I was your mother’s attorney.””
Grandma Pearl stood immediately.
“Claire.””
They embraced.
And I realized something.
Everyone in this room had secrets.
Everyone had history.
Everyone had pieces of the puzzle.
Except me.
Claire looked at me.
“You must be Lily.””
I nodded.
“Yes.””
Her expression softened.
“I’m sorry.””
“For what?””
“For how long it took to bring you the truth.””
Victoria laughed.
“You’re all so dramatic.””
Claire looked at her.
“No.””
Her voice was calm.
“You are.””
Victoria’s smile disappeared.
Claire placed a folder on the table.
“I have the original documents.””
My father stared.
“Original documents?””
“The ones proving what happened six years ago.””
Victoria’s face tightened.
“You don’t have anything.””
Claire opened the folder.
“I have Elena’s medical records.””
She placed one paper down.
“Your messages.””
Another.
“Your financial transfers.””
Another.
Victoria stopped smiling.
“And finally…”
Claire looked at my father.
“Your signed confession.””
My father went pale.
“What?””
Claire turned toward Victoria.
“You recorded him admitting he believed Elena was leaving.””
Victoria’s eyes narrowed.
“That proves nothing.””
“No.””
Claire nodded.
“It proves he was manipulated.””
She looked at my father.
“You were angry. Hurt. Confused.””
My father closed his eyes.
“But you never agreed to harm Elena.””
He looked up.
“Because I didn’t.””
Claire nodded.
“I know.””
Victoria suddenly moved.
Fast.
She grabbed the folder.
But Thomas stepped forward and stopped her.
“Enough.””
She glared.
“You think you’re a hero?””
“No.””
Thomas looked at her.
“I’m someone who finally stopped being afraid.””
The words hit her.
Because that was always Victoria’s weapon.
Fear.
She controlled people by creating it.
But now everyone knew.
And fear only worked when secrets stayed hidden.
Claire looked at me.
“There’s one more thing.””
I felt exhausted.
“One more?””
She nodded.
She handed me a letter.
“This was written by your uncle Michael.””
My heart stopped.
The uncle who died.
The uncle nobody told me about.
I opened it.
The handwriting was shaky.
*Lily,*
*If you are reading this, then I failed to protect your mother.*
I continued.
*But I need you to know something. Your mother never betrayed this family. She spent her final days trying to save it.*
My eyes filled.
The letter continued.
*Victoria wanted everyone to believe Elena was selfish because selfish people are easier to hate.*
I looked at Victoria.
She stared at the floor.
*But the truth is simple. Elena loved too much. That was her weakness.*
I swallowed.
Then came the final line.
*The person who saved Elena that night was not me. It was Daniel.*
I stopped.
I looked at my father.
“What?””
Everyone stared.
The letter continued.
*Daniel found the truth too late. When he realized what Victoria had done, he tried to fix it.*
My father covered his face.
“I tried.””
My mother looked at him.
“You knew?””
He nodded.
“Not everything.””
His voice broke.
“But enough.””
My mother looked devastated.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because Victoria threatened Lily.””
The room went silent.
“What?””
My father looked at me.
“She said if I exposed her, she would make sure I lost you.””
My eyes filled.
“You let me hate you.””
He nodded.
“I thought keeping you alive was worth it.””
The pain on his face was unbearable.
“I was wrong.””
My mother cried.
Not because everything was fixed.
But because she finally understood.
They had both been trapped.
By fear.
By lies.
By Victoria.
Victoria suddenly laughed.
Everyone turned.
“You all think you’ve won.””
Claire sighed.
“Victoria.””
“No.””
She looked at me.
“You still don’t know the entire truth.””
I was tired of hearing that sentence.
“What now?””
Victoria smiled.
“Your mother thinks Adrian is your father.””
Everyone froze.
My mother went pale.
“What?””
Victoria looked satisfied.
“But the test you saw…”
She pointed at the folder.
“Was not about Adrian.””
My heart stopped.
“What are you saying?””
Victoria smiled.
“The man you think is your father…”
She looked at Thomas.
“He isn’t.””
Thomas stepped back.
“What?””
Victoria turned to me.
“The paternity test was real.””
My hands shook.
“Then who?””
Victoria smiled.
“The answer has been in this house the entire time.””
Nobody spoke.
Then her eyes moved.
May you like
Toward my father.
Daniel.
