Chapter 13: The Last Secret in the Box

The room felt colder after Victoria’s confession.

Not because of the winter air.

Not because the windows were open.

Because the person I trusted most had just become the person I feared.

My father.

Daniel.

The man who taught me how to ride a bicycle.

The man who held my hand at my mother’s funeral.

The man who told me every Christmas that our family would always stay together.

He stood in front of me, and for the first time in my life, I didn’t know who he was.

“Lily…”

I stepped away.

“Don’t.””

The word hurt him.

I saw it.

But I couldn’t stop.

Because everything I believed was collapsing.

My mother.

Victoria.

Thomas.

And now him.

“You knew?””

My father shook his head.

“No.””

Victoria laughed.

“You’re still lying.””

“Victoria, stop.””

“No.””

She looked at everyone.

“After everything, you still want to pretend you’re innocent?””

My father’s face hardened.

“You’re the one who destroyed this family.””

Victoria smiled.

“And you helped me.””

Silence.

I looked at the photograph again.

My father standing beside Victoria.

The date.

The note.

The accusation.

“Explain.””

My father looked at me.

“I can.””

“Then do it.””

He swallowed.

“I met Victoria before your mother disappeared.””

My mother closed her eyes.

A painful realization crossed her face.

“How long?””

My father looked ashamed.

“Three months.””

The room went quiet.

Three months.

Three months of conversations.

Three months of secrets.

Three months while I was living inside a family that was already falling apart.

“You had an affair.””

My father didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

My mother turned away.

Thomas moved closer to her.

Not touching her.

Just standing beside her.

And somehow that made everything worse.

Because even after all these years, there were people who showed up for her.

And people who didn’t.

“I was angry,” my father finally said.

Everyone looked at him.

“After Elena left…”

My mother turned sharply.

“I didn’t leave you.””

He looked at her.

“I know that now.””

“No.””

Her voice trembled.

“You didn’t know. You believed what you wanted to believe.””

He looked down.

And I knew she was right.

My father had been hurt.

But hurt did not excuse betrayal.

“What did Victoria promise you?””

My father looked at me.

Nothing.

That was his answer.

“What did she promise you?””

Victoria stepped in.

“I promised him a future.””

My stomach turned.

“A future?””

She nodded.

“A life without secrets.””

Everyone stared at her.

She smiled.

“I told Daniel Elena was going to leave anyway. I told him Lily would be safer with people who actually cared about stability.””

My hands curled into fists.

“You wanted to take me.””

Victoria looked at me.

“Yes.””

The honesty was horrifying.

“Why?””

She tilted her head.

“Because your mother loved you more than anything.””

“That doesn’t answer my question.””

Her smile faded.

“Because love makes people weak.””

My mother stepped forward.

“No.””

Victoria looked at her.

“You always thought love made you powerful.””

My mother shook her head.

“It did.””

Victoria laughed.

“No. It made you blind.””

Then Grandma Pearl spoke.

Quietly.

“You’re wrong.””

Everyone looked at her.

Grandma walked toward the box.

She picked up the flash drive.

“You made one mistake.””

Victoria frowned.

“What?””

“You assumed Elena only trusted Lily.””

Grandma connected the drive to the old laptop sitting on the desk.

The screen flickered.

A folder appeared.

One file.

*Christmas Eve Final Recording*

Victoria’s expression changed.

“What is that?””

My mother looked shocked.

“Pearl…”

Grandma didn’t look away.

“Your mother left one final message.””

She pressed play.

At first, there was only static.

Then my mother’s voice.

Older.

Tired.

But clear.

“If you are hearing this, then something happened.””

I covered my mouth.

The room listened.

“I don’t know who found this file. I don’t know if I’m still alive.””

My mother closed her eyes.

“But I need Lily to know the truth.””

A pause.

Then:

“I was betrayed.””

My father looked down.

The recording continued.

“Not by one person.””

Everyone froze.

“By two.””

The room went silent.

My mother looked confused.

Grandma Pearl looked shocked.

I looked at Victoria.

She looked nervous.

The recording continued.

“Victoria was never acting alone.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Someone inside my own family helped her.””

The laptop speakers crackled.

Then my mother said:

“Daniel.””

My father looked up.

“No.””

My mother in the recording continued.

“I didn’t want to believe it.””

My father stepped back.

“I never heard this.””

“But the evidence was clear.””

Victoria smiled slightly.

Because now everyone was focused on him.

But then the recording continued.

“Daniel was manipulated.””

Everyone stopped.

“What?””

My mother’s recorded voice continued.

“He believed Victoria’s lies. He believed I had betrayed him. He believed he was protecting Lily.””

My father looked broken.

The room changed.

Because there was a difference between helping someone destroy a family…

and being tricked into destroying one.

The recording continued.

“But the person who planned everything was not Daniel.””

Victoria’s face went pale.

“No.””

My mother’s voice became stronger.

“The person who orchestrated everything was someone who knew exactly how to control him.””

Everyone stared.

At Victoria.

But then the recording said:

“Someone I trusted.””

The file ended.

Nobody moved.

Then Victoria whispered:

“She’s lying.””

Grandma looked at her.

“Is she?””

Victoria’s eyes shifted.

Just for a second.

Toward the door.

Toward escape.

And that was when we all knew.

She was afraid.

My mother stepped forward.

“You didn’t think I kept copies.””

Victoria’s face changed.

“You’re bluffing.””

My mother shook her head.

“No.””

She looked at me.

“I learned something.””

“What?””

Her eyes moved to Victoria.

“People who destroy memories always forget that memories leave traces.””

Then the front door downstairs slammed.

A man’s voice echoed through the house.

“Victoria.””

Everyone froze.

Victoria looked terrified.

Because she knew the voice.

May you like

And whoever it was…

she never expected them to return.
