Chapter 11: The Man Who Held the Missing Piece
The next morning, I woke up feeling like I had lived an entire lifetime overnight.
My bedroom looked the same.
The same walls.
The same shelves.
The same old Christmas lights I had forgotten to take down last year.
But everything felt different.
Because the girl who had gone to sleep believing she understood her family no longer existed.
I sat on my bed holding the silver Christmas tree charm Thomas had given me.
My mother’s gift.
A piece of a story.
Not the whole story.
Never the whole story.
A knock came at my door.
“Lily?””
My mother.
I stared at the door.
For years, I dreamed about hearing her voice.
Now I wasn’t sure I was ready.
“Come in.””
She opened the door slowly.
She looked tired.
Older.
Human.
Not the perfect mother from my childhood memories.
Not the stranger from my nightmares.
Just Elena.
She sat beside me.
“I know you’re angry.””
I looked down.
“I don’t know what I am.””
“That’s fair.””
I looked at her.
“You knew about Adrian my entire life.””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
“You knew he was my father.””
“Yes.””
“And you never told me.””
Her eyes filled.
“No.””
“Why?””
She took a long breath.
“Because the world around Adrian was dangerous.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“It means people wanted what he had.””
“Money?””
“Power.””
I looked away.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
My mother touched the bracelet.
“He was a brilliant man.””
“But?””
She looked at me.
“But brilliant people can still make mistakes.””
I waited.
“What mistake?””
She was quiet.
Then she said:
“Trusting the wrong people.””
A knock interrupted us.
My father stood outside.
“There’s someone here.””
My mother immediately stood.
“Who?””
He looked at me.
“Adrian.””
My heart stopped.
The man whose name had followed me my entire life was finally here.
Again.
I walked downstairs.
Everyone was gathered in the living room.
Thomas stood near the window.
Grandma Pearl sat beside him.
Victoria was smiling.
That bothered me.
She looked too calm.
The front door opened.
And a man walked in.
He looked nothing like I expected.
Adrian wasn’t old.
He wasn’t mysterious.
He looked ordinary.
That was somehow worse.
Because ordinary people could hide anything.
His eyes found mine.
And immediately filled with emotion.
“Lily.””
I hated how familiar that sounded.
Like he had said my name a thousand times.
“Who are you?””
He swallowed.
“I’m your father.””
The words felt strange.
Not wrong.
Just strange.
I looked at Thomas.
Then Daniel.
Then Adrian.
Three men.
Three stories.
One life.
“I need answers.””
Adrian nodded.
“You deserve them.””
Victoria laughed softly.
“Careful.””
Everyone turned.
She stood.
“You might not like what he says.””
Adrian’s expression changed.
“You’re still doing this?””
Victoria smiled.
“You’re still pretending you’re innocent?””
My mother stepped between them.
“Enough.””
Adrian looked at her.
“Elena.””
The way he said her name carried years.
Pain.
Love.
Regret.
I noticed.
So did Daniel.
He looked away.
Adrian looked back at me.
“I came here because I owe you the truth.””
“Then tell me.””
He nodded.
“Your mother and I knew each other before Daniel.””
I already knew that.
“We were together.””
I swallowed.
“And?””
“And when she found out she was pregnant…”
He stopped.
My mother closed her eyes.
“She was afraid.””
“Because of you?””
Adrian shook his head.
“Because of my family.””
I frowned.
“What family?””
He hesitated.
Then said:
“My father controlled a company with dangerous people involved.””
Everyone became silent.
Victoria smiled slightly.
“There it is.””
Adrian ignored her.
“Your mother discovered things she wasn’t supposed to know.””
“Like what?””
“Money laundering. Fraud. Blackmail.””
My father looked shocked.
“I had no idea.””
Adrian nodded.
“That’s why Elena left.””
My mother looked at me.
“She wasn’t running from you.””
My eyes filled.
“She was running from them.””
Adrian nodded.
“Yes.””
I looked at Victoria.
“Where do you fit into this?””
The room went silent.
Victoria smiled.
“I was the person who found the truth.””
Adrian looked disgusted.
“No.””
“Yes.””
She stepped closer.
“I was the only one smart enough to understand what Elena had.””
“What?””
“Evidence.””
Adrian’s face changed.
“She still has it?””
Victoria smiled.
“No.””
Everyone froze.
My mother whispered:
“What did you do?””
Victoria looked at me.
“I made sure she couldn’t use it.””
My heart sank.
“How?””
Victoria’s smile disappeared.
“She trusted me.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Grandma Pearl stood.
“What did you do?””
Victoria looked at her.
“I burned the original files.””
My mother went pale.
“You destroyed them?””
“No.””
Victoria smiled.
“I destroyed the copies.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Copies?””
Adrian suddenly looked alarmed.
“Where are the originals?””
Victoria smiled.
“Exactly.””
She looked at me.
“Your mother hid them.””
My mother shook her head.
“No.””
Victoria stepped closer.
“She hid them somewhere only one person could find.””
My stomach tightened.
“Who?””
May you like
Victoria looked directly at me.
“You.””
