Thinking

Chapter 9: The Final Move

The message remained on Lauren’s phone.

Three words.

*I know everything.*

Daniel stared at the screen.

Then he looked at Lauren.

“You were going to take me to him.””

It wasn’t a question.

Lauren lowered her eyes.

“No.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“Before tonight, would you have?””

The silence answered for her.

She looked ashamed.

“Yes.””

Margaret closed her eyes.

Daniel felt a familiar pain return.

Every time he thought he understood the truth, another layer appeared.

He was tired.

Tired of discovering that every person around him had been hiding something.

Richard stepped closer.

“We need to think carefully.””

Daniel looked at him.

“He wants me to come to him.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Richard looked at the message.

“Because he knows the plan failed.””

Daniel glanced at Lauren.

“And he thinks she can fix it.””

Lauren swallowed.

“He knows I’m here.””

“How?””

She looked at the phone.

“I don’t know.””

Daniel looked toward the windows.

The house suddenly felt exposed.

Like someone was watching.

“How long has he been watching us?””

Nobody answered.

That was the worst answer.

Margaret walked toward Daniel.

“No.””

He looked at her.

“You can’t go.””

“I need to.””

“He is dangerous.””

Daniel nodded.

“I know.””

“No, Daniel.””

Her voice trembled.

“You don’t understand.””

He looked at her.

“I understand more than I ever have.””

She shook her head.

“He took your father from me.””

The room went silent.

Daniel softened.

“I know.””

“No.””

Margaret stepped closer.

“You don’t know what Victor is capable of.””

Daniel looked at the woman who had protected him his entire life.

And he finally saw something he had never noticed.

His mother wasn’t just sad.

She was scared.

Not for herself.

For him.

“Mom.””

She grabbed his hand.

“Please.””

Daniel squeezed her fingers.

“I spent my whole life thinking you were fragile.””

Tears formed in her eyes.

“But you survived something nobody should survive.””

He looked at Richard.

“I’m not walking into this blindly.””

Richard nodded.

“Then we need a plan.””

Lauren looked up.

“A plan?””

Daniel turned toward her.

“Yes.””

She looked surprised.

“You trust me?””

“No.””

The answer was immediate.

Her face fell.

“But I believe you know Victor.””

Lauren nodded slowly.

“That’s fair.””

Daniel looked at the message.

“He wants me alone.””

Richard shook his head.

“That’s exactly what he wants.””

“He believes I’m still the same person he knew.””

Richard understood.

“He thinks you’re still the boy who trusts him.””

Daniel looked at the old photograph on the wall.

Him and his father.

A little boy standing between two men.

His father.

And Victor.

“He doesn’t know me anymore.””

They decided to meet Victor at an abandoned office building near the old company property.

A place that once belonged to Jonathan Reed.

The irony wasn’t lost on anyone.

The place where everything started.

The place where everything would end.

Daniel arrived first.

But he wasn’t alone.

Richard stayed nearby.

The police had not been called yet.

Not because they didn’t want justice.

Because Victor still had information.

Information they needed.

Daniel walked into the empty building.

Dust covered the floors.

Old company signs hung from the walls.

The place felt like a ghost.

“Daniel.””

The voice came from the darkness.

Familiar.

Calm.

Almost warm.

Daniel stopped.

Victor Hayes stepped forward.

Older than Daniel remembered.

But still carrying the same confident smile.

The smile of someone who believed he was always in control.

“Victor.””

The older man looked at him.

“You look just like your father.””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“Don’t say that.””

Victor smiled slightly.

“You always hated when people compared you to him.””

“No.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“I hated when people lied to me about him.””

The smile disappeared.

Only slightly.

But Daniel noticed.

“You’ve learned a lot tonight.””

“Yes.””

Victor looked around.

“Lauren failed.””

Daniel said nothing.

“She was never strong enough.””

“Neither were you.””

Victor looked amused.

“Careful.””

“Why?””

Daniel stared at him.

“Because I know who you are?””

A small silence followed.

Victor’s expression changed.

“You don’t know anything.””

Daniel laughed quietly.

“I know enough.””

He pulled out the documents.

“I know you used Lauren.””

Victor’s eyes moved to the papers.

“I know you tried to steal my inheritance.””

A pause.

“I know you were involved in my father’s death.””

Victor’s face remained calm.

Too calm.

Daniel noticed.

“You’re not denying it.””

Victor looked at him.

“Would it matter?””

The words sent a chill through him.

“You admit it?””

Victor sighed.

“Your father was a difficult man.””

Daniel stared.

“That’s your excuse?””

“He ruined everything I built.””

“You stole from him.””

“I protected what should have been mine.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Jonathan trusted you.””

Victor laughed.

“Jonathan was weak.””

“He treated you like family.””

“And he made the mistake of thinking loyalty was more valuable than power.””

Daniel felt sick.

There it was.

The truth.

The thing that had been hiding beneath decades of smiles.

Victor never regretted anything.

“You killed him.””

Victor looked at him.

“I made a decision.””

Daniel’s hands curled into fists.

“You murdered my father.””

Victor’s expression changed.

“You’re angry because you don’t understand the world.””

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“I’m angry because you do.””

Victor looked confused.

“What?””

“You understand exactly what you did.””

A long silence followed.

Then Victor smiled.

“You really are his son.””

Daniel froze.

The words meant something.

“You just admitted it.””

Victor looked at him.

“What?””

“That I’m Jonathan’s son.””

Victor’s face changed.

Only for a moment.

But enough.

Daniel had his answer.

“You knew.””

Victor said nothing.

“You knew my whole life.””

“Yes.””

The honesty was terrifying.

“Why?””

Victor stepped closer.

“Because Jonathan made one mistake.””

“What?””

“He left you.””

Daniel stared.

“My father didn’t leave me.””

Victor smiled.

“Not the father who raised you.””

He paused.

“The father who created you.””

Daniel felt anger rising.

“You’re sick.””

Victor ignored him.

“Jonathan had everything. Money. Power. Respect.””

“And you wanted it.””

“Yes.””

“At least you’re honest.””

Victor smiled.

“Honesty is overrated.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Then why Lauren?””

Victor turned away.

“Because people are predictable.””

“What does that mean?””

“She was ambitious.””

Daniel nodded.

“So you found someone willing to use me.””

“Yes.””

“And the wedding?””

“A perfect opportunity.””

Daniel felt disgust.

“My mother.””

Victor’s face hardened.

“Your mother complicated things.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“You mean she survived.””

Victor looked at him.

“She should have stayed quiet.””

The words confirmed everything.

Daniel reached into his pocket.

The recorder was already running.

Every confession.

Every word.

But Victor didn’t know.

“You think you won,” Daniel said.

Victor smiled.

“I already did.””

“No.””

Daniel looked at him.

“You lost the moment you thought I was still the boy you could control.””

Victor’s expression changed.

Then a voice came from behind them.

“You should have known better.””

Victor turned.

Lauren stood in the doorway.

Victor stared.

“You.””

She walked inside.

“I’m done being afraid of you.””

Victor laughed.

“You think he’ll forgive you?””

Lauren looked at Daniel.

“No.””

Daniel said nothing.

“But I’m not asking him to.””

She held up her phone.

“I sent everything.””

Victor’s smile disappeared.

“To who?””

Lauren looked at him.

“The police.””

For the first time that night, Victor looked uncertain.

Daniel watched the man who had controlled everyone for years finally lose control.

Then Victor reached into his coat.

And Daniel saw something metallic.

A flash.

A weapon.

Everyone froze.

Victor whispered:

May you like

“You should have stayed out of family business.””

And then the lights in the building went out.
