Chapter 2: The Envelope With Her Name
The ballroom did not move.
For several seconds after Daniel announced the wedding was canceled, the silence felt heavier than any argument could have been.
The guests sat frozen at their tables.
Some looked at Daniel with sympathy.
Others looked at Lauren with disbelief.
But Lauren only stared at him as if she was waiting for him to laugh and admit it was some kind of cruel joke.
He didn’t.
The man who had walked toward the microphone minutes earlier was not the same man who had promised her forever that morning.
“Daniel,” Lauren said quietly.
Her voice carried a warning.
A warning that only someone who knew her well would recognize.
“Come back here.””
Daniel looked at her from the stage.
“No.””
The single word cut through the room.
Lauren’s face tightened.
“You’re embarrassing me.””
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“Embarrassing you?””
He looked around at the guests.
Then back at her.
“My mother is standing over there with a handprint on her face because of you.””
Lauren touched her own dress.
“You don’t understand what happened.””
“Then explain it.””
“I already did.””
“No,” Daniel said.
“You gave me an excuse.””
The crowd remained silent.
Margaret stood near the entrance, wishing she could disappear.
She never wanted this.
She never wanted her son’s wedding day to become a battlefield.
She had spent years telling Daniel to build a peaceful life, not destroy one.
But as she watched him stand there, she realized something.
He wasn’t destroying his future.
He was protecting it.
A waiter approached the stage carefully.
“Mr. Williams?””
Daniel turned.
“Yes?””
The waiter pointed toward the entrance.
“There’s someone here asking for you.””
Daniel followed his gaze.
That was when he saw the man holding the envelope.
He was in his late fifties, wearing a dark suit that looked slightly outdated compared to the luxury surrounding him.
He wasn’t a guest.
He wasn’t part of the wedding staff.
And he looked nervous.
Almost guilty.
Lauren saw him too.
Her expression changed instantly.
Only for a second.
But Daniel noticed.
He noticed everything now.
“Who is that?”” he asked.
Lauren didn’t answer.
That silence was louder than anything she could have said.
The man walked closer.
“Daniel Williams?””
“Yes.””
The stranger swallowed.
“My name is Richard Cole.””
Daniel stepped down from the stage.
“Do I know you?””
“No.””
Richard looked at Lauren.
“But I believe you need to know me.””
Lauren immediately stepped forward.
“Richard, you need to leave.””
The guests began whispering.
Daniel stopped walking.
“Interesting.””
Lauren looked at him.
“What?””
“You know his name.””
Her lips parted.
“I mean… I know who he is.””
Richard held out the envelope.
“I tried to give this to you before the ceremony.””
Daniel accepted it.
“Before the ceremony?””
Richard nodded.
“Yes.””
Lauren’s voice became sharper.
“This is unnecessary.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Why?””
“Because this man is trying to ruin our day.””
Daniel glanced down at the envelope.
“My wedding day was already ruined when you slapped my mother.””
A few guests quietly nodded.
Lauren’s face flushed.
“You’re really choosing her over me?””
Daniel looked stunned.
“My mother?””
“Yes.””
“That’s what you think this is?””
Lauren crossed her arms.
“You’re acting like I committed some terrible crime.””
Margaret looked down.
Daniel’s expression changed.
“You hit an elderly woman.””
“She’s not helpless.””
“She’s my mother.””
“And I’m your wife.””
The room went silent again.
Except Daniel was no longer looking angry.
He looked disappointed.
And somehow, that was worse.
“Not anymore.””
Lauren stared at him.
The words landed harder than the slap she had given Margaret.
“You don’t mean that.””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Because he did.
Richard cleared his throat.
“I’m sorry to interrupt, but there’s something in that envelope you need to see.””
Daniel opened it.
Inside were several printed documents.
The first page had a familiar name.
Lauren Parker.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then stopped.
His face changed.
Margaret noticed immediately.
“Daniel?””
He didn’t respond.
Lauren walked closer.
“What is it?””
Daniel looked up.
For the first time all night, Lauren looked afraid.
Not angry.
Not annoyed.
Afraid.
“What is this?”” Daniel asked.
Lauren’s voice softened.
“Daniel, listen to me.””
“No.””
His fingers tightened around the papers.
“You listen to me.””
The guests watched as the confident bride from earlier suddenly seemed much smaller.
“What does this mean?””
Lauren looked away.
Richard answered.
“She wasn’t honest about why she wanted this marriage.””
A murmur moved through the room.
Lauren snapped toward him.
“You have no right.””
Richard looked at her.
“I have every right.””
Daniel looked between them.
“Someone explain.””
Richard took a deep breath.
“Three months ago, I was contacted by Lauren.””
Lauren’s face went pale.
“That’s a lie.””
Richard shook his head.
“No, it isn’t.””
Daniel looked at her.
“You contacted him?””
Lauren quickly replied.
“For business.””
Richard gave a bitter laugh.
“Business?””
He looked around the ballroom.
“Is that what you call it?””
Daniel’s stomach tightened.
“What happened?””
Richard looked at the envelope.
“Inside are copies of financial records, messages, and agreements.””
Lauren stepped toward Daniel.
“Don’t listen to him.””
Daniel held up his hand.
“Stop.””
She froze.
“I want to hear him.””
For the first time, Lauren looked powerless.
Richard continued.
“Lauren came to me because she needed information.””
“About what?”” Daniel asked.
Richard hesitated.
Then he said:
“About your family.””
Margaret felt a chill.
“My family?””
Richard nodded.
“She wanted to know about your mother’s house.””
Daniel frowned.
“What?””
Lauren immediately interrupted.
“That’s ridiculous.””
Richard looked directly at her.
“You asked how much it was worth.””
Nobody spoke.
Daniel slowly turned toward Lauren.
“Why?””
Lauren’s eyes moved around the room.
The confident smile was gone.
The perfect bride was gone.
Now she looked like someone searching for a way out.
“Daniel, it’s not what you think.””
“Then what is it?””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Richard answered for her.
“She knew your mother owned the property outright.””
Margaret’s heart dropped.
Her house.
The small home where she had raised Daniel.
The garden where those roses grew.
The place filled with every memory she had left.
Daniel looked at Lauren.
“You were interested in my mother’s house?””
“No.””
The answer came too quickly.
Richard continued.
“She knew the land value had increased because of the new development project nearby.””
Daniel stared at Lauren.
“You knew?””
Lauren’s silence was enough.
A wave of anger moved through the room.
Not loud anger.
The kind that comes when people are deeply disappointed.
Margaret felt tears forming.
Not because of the house.
She didn’t care about the money.
She cared because she finally understood why Lauren had always looked at her life like it was something to be measured.
Daniel looked down at the documents again.
There were copies of messages.
Dates.
Names.
Plans.
His face became colder with every page.
Lauren stepped closer.
“Daniel, please.””
He looked up.
“Please what?””
“I was stressed.””
“Stressed?””
“Yes.””
“You planned something behind my back.””
“I didn’t do anything.””
“You asked someone about my mother’s property.””
“It was just information.””
Daniel laughed once.
But there was no humor in it.
“Information?””
He looked at the guests.
“Did everyone hear that?””
Lauren’s eyes filled with frustration.
“You’re twisting this.””
“No.””
Daniel shook his head.
“I’m finally seeing it.””
Margaret walked toward him.
“Daniel…”
He looked at her.
And the anger in his face softened.
“I’m sorry, Mom.””
She shook her head quickly.
“Don’t apologize to me.””
“But I should have seen this.””
“You loved someone.””
His eyes lowered.
“I thought I knew her.””
A quiet moment passed.
Then Richard spoke again.
“There’s something else.””
Daniel looked at him.
“What?””
Richard hesitated.
“I didn’t want to say this here.””
Lauren’s eyes widened.
“Don’t.””
Daniel turned sharply.
“What else?””
Richard looked at Lauren.
Then back at Daniel.
“The wedding wasn’t the first time she used someone to get what she wanted.””
Lauren whispered:
“Richard, please.””
But it was too late.
Daniel took one step closer.
“What are you talking about?””
Richard slowly pulled out another document from his briefcase.
“This is the reason I came tonight.””
He placed it in Daniel’s hand.
Daniel looked down.
His expression changed.
Because at the top of the page was a name he recognized.
A name that had nothing to do with his mother.
A name that changed everything.
His own.
May you like
And underneath it was a sentence that made his blood run cold:
*“Marriage arrangement proposal — approved target: Daniel Williams.””*
