Chapter 4: The Name Behind The Betrayal
Daniel stared at the phone screen.
He read the message once.
Then again.
Then a third time.
Because his mind refused to accept what his eyes were seeing.
*“The ceremony went exactly as planned. Once Daniel signs the transfer documents, everything will be finished.””*
Below the message was a name.
A name he had known since childhood.
A name that belonged to someone who had sat at his family’s dinner table.
Someone who had comforted him after his father’s funeral.
Someone who had stood beside Margaret when Daniel was only eight years old and didn’t understand why his father wasn’t coming home.
Daniel’s fingers went cold.
“No.””
The word escaped his mouth before he could stop it.
Margaret looked at him.
“Daniel?””
He didn’t answer.
His eyes stayed locked on the phone.
Richard slowly lowered it.
“I’m sorry.””
Daniel looked up.
“Who sent this?””
Richard hesitated.
But the hesitation was unnecessary.
Daniel already knew.
The name was still burning in his mind.
“Tell me.””
Richard looked toward Lauren.
Then back at Daniel.
“It came from Victor.””
Margaret went completely still.
Not because she didn’t know who Victor was.
Because she did.
“Victor Hayes?””
Her voice was barely a whisper.
Daniel turned toward her.
“You know?””
Margaret looked away.
And that small movement made Daniel’s stomach tighten.
“Mom.””
She closed her eyes.
“I didn’t want you to find out like this.””
The ballroom suddenly felt smaller.
Daniel looked between them.
“What does that mean?””
Margaret didn’t answer immediately.
She looked older in that moment.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
Like she had been carrying something heavy for years.
“Victor helped your father after the company started growing.””
Daniel frowned.
“He was Dad’s business partner.””
“Yes.””
“And my godfather.””
Margaret nodded.
Daniel remembered.
Victor Hayes had been around for almost his entire childhood.
He had taught Daniel how to throw a baseball.
He had brought him his first suit when he graduated high school.
He had been the man Daniel called when he needed advice after his father died.
He was family.
Or at least, Daniel had thought he was.
“He helped us,” Margaret said quietly.
Richard interrupted.
“He helped himself.””
Daniel looked at him.
“What happened?””
Richard sighed.
“Your father’s company was worth more than most people realized.””
Daniel shook his head.
“My father sold most of it before he died.””
“That’s what you were told.””
A silence followed.
Daniel’s face changed.
“What?””
Richard looked uncomfortable.
“I should have said something sooner.””
Margaret looked at him.
“You knew?””
Richard nodded.
“I discovered the records when Lauren hired me.””
Daniel looked between them.
“What records?””
Richard took a folder from his briefcase.
“Your father didn’t sell everything.””
He handed the papers to Daniel.
Daniel opened them slowly.
The documents were old.
Some were copies.
Some had signatures.
Some had dates from nearly twenty years ago.
He scanned the pages.
Then stopped.
“What is this?””
Margaret stepped closer.
Daniel looked at her.
“Mom.””
She looked at the paper.
Then lowered her eyes.
“Your father created a private trust.””
Daniel’s eyebrows pulled together.
“For me?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because Victor convinced me it was safer.””
Daniel looked confused.
“Safer?””
Margaret swallowed.
“After your father died, I was overwhelmed. I didn’t understand business. I was grieving. I had an eight-year-old son and bills I couldn’t even look at without crying.””
Her voice trembled.
“Victor told me he would handle everything.””
Daniel stared at the documents.
“And you trusted him.””
“Yes.””
The answer came with pain.
“Because I thought he was your father’s best friend.””
Daniel looked back at the message.
*Once Daniel signs the transfer documents, everything will be finished.*
A terrible realization began forming.
“The wedding documents.””
Richard nodded.
“Yes.””
Daniel looked at Lauren.
Her face was pale.
“What were you going to have me sign?””
Lauren didn’t respond.
“Lauren.””
She took a step back.
“I didn’t know everything.””
Daniel laughed quietly.
“Really?””
“Yes.””
“Then what did you know?””
She looked down.
“I knew there were papers related to your family assets.””
“And you planned to get me to sign them.””
“I thought they were normal marriage agreements.””
Richard shook his head.
“No.””
Lauren looked at him angrily.
“Stop acting like you know everything.””
“I know enough.””
Daniel looked at Richard.
“Tell me.””
Richard pulled out another document.
“This was the agreement Lauren was supposed to convince you to sign after the wedding.””
Daniel took it.
His eyes moved across the page.
The first paragraph looked normal.
Marriage terms.
Financial planning.
Asset protection.
But then he reached the final pages.
His breathing changed.
“What is this?””
Richard answered:
“Power of attorney.””
Daniel looked up.
“She wanted control of my finances?””
“Yes.””
“No.””
His voice became sharper.
“She wanted control of everything.””
Richard nodded.
“If something happened to you, she would have authority over major decisions.””
Margaret covered her mouth.
Daniel turned toward Lauren.
“You were going to make yourself responsible for my life?””
Lauren’s eyes filled with tears.
“I loved you.””
Daniel stared at her.
“Stop saying that.””
“Why?””
“Because love doesn’t come with paperwork hidden behind it.””
The words hit her.
For the first time all night, Lauren looked genuinely hurt.
But Daniel no longer knew if even that was real.
“You think I never cared about you?””
“I don’t know what was real anymore.””
That was the truth.
And somehow, that hurt more than anger.
Lauren wiped her face.
“I made mistakes.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You keep calling them mistakes.””
“Because I regret them.””
“Do you regret hurting my mother?””
She froze.
“Do you regret using me?””
Silence.
“Do you regret lying?””
Her eyes dropped.
Daniel nodded slowly.
“That’s what I thought.””
Victor’s name remained between them.
A ghost from the past.
A betrayal that reached further back than today.
Richard checked his phone again.
“I need to show you something else.””
Daniel looked exhausted.
“What now?””
Richard opened an email.
“This came from an account connected to Victor.””
Daniel read the screen.
The message was short.
*Lauren did her part. The boy is emotional. He will sign anything after the ceremony.*
Boy.
Daniel felt something inside him break.
Not because Victor underestimated him.
Because Victor had never seen him as an adult.
Even after all these years.
He was still the child whose father had died.
The child who needed guidance.
The child who could be controlled.
Daniel looked toward the empty stage.
The microphone still stood there.
The wedding decorations still surrounded the room.
A celebration built on lies.
Margaret touched his arm.
“Daniel.””
He looked at her.
“I’m sorry.””
“For what?””
“For not seeing them.””
Margaret shook her head.
“You trusted people. That isn’t a weakness.””
He looked at her.
“Sometimes it is.””
“No.””
Her voice became firm.
“Trusting the wrong person is painful. But becoming someone who trusts nobody would mean they won.””
Daniel was quiet.
Then his phone rang.
Everyone looked at him.
The screen showed an unknown number.
Richard’s expression changed.
“Answer it.””
Daniel hesitated.
Then picked up.
“Hello?””
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Daniel’s face changed.
His hand tightened around the phone.
“Where?””
Margaret stepped closer.
“What is it?””
Daniel ended the call.
He looked at everyone.
“It was my father’s old attorney.””
Richard frowned.
“Your father’s attorney?””
Daniel nodded.
“He said there’s something I need to see.””
“When?””
“Tonight.””
Richard looked concerned.
“Why tonight?””
Daniel looked down at the papers.
Then at Lauren.
Then at the doorway where guests were slowly leaving.
Because suddenly, the wedding was no longer the biggest secret being uncovered.
“Because he said my father left instructions.””
Margaret’s eyes widened.
“Instructions for what?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
He picked up the folder.
And walked toward the exit.
But before he reached the door, Lauren spoke.
“Daniel.””
He stopped.
Her voice was softer than before.
Almost desperate.
“If you walk away now, you’ll never know the truth.””
Daniel turned slowly.
“What truth?””
Lauren looked at him.
And for the first time, he saw fear in her eyes.
Not guilt.
Not embarrassment.
Fear.
“Victor wasn’t the one who started this.””
Daniel stared.
“What are you talking about?””
Lauren swallowed.
Then whispered:
“He wasn’t the person who chose you.””
A chill moved through the room.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Then who did?””
Lauren looked toward Margaret.
May you like
And the color disappeared from her face.
“Your father.””
