Chapter 6: The Monster Behind the Foundation
The man walked through the warehouse like he owned it.
Because maybe he did.
Everyone around him moved differently.
The guards.
The security team.
They weren’t protecting him.
They were obeying him.
My father stepped in front of me.
A protective instinct from a man I thought I had lost forever.
“Stay behind me.””
I almost laughed.
After twelve years of believing he abandoned me, those words felt impossible.
But then I remembered the photographs.
The hidden room.
The children.
And I realized I didn’t know my father either.
The man stopped a few feet away.
“Richard.””
My father said nothing.
The man looked at me.
“So this is Marcus.””
I tightened my grip on the folder.
“Who are you?””
He smiled.
“My name is Adrian Vale.””
The name meant nothing.
But the way my father reacted told me everything.
“You know him,” I said.
My father’s silence was enough.
“Who is he?””
Adrian answered.
“I was your father’s partner.””
“Partner?””
“In business.””
I looked around the warehouse.
“Is this your business?””
His smile widened.
“You misunderstand.””
He pointed toward the photographs.
“This is not a business.””
“Then what is it?””
His expression became serious.
“Control.””
The word made my skin crawl.
Adrian walked toward the wall of photographs.
“For years, people have believed children disappear because nobody cares.””
He touched one picture.
“They are wrong.””
My father stepped forward.
“Stop.””
Adrian ignored him.
“The world is full of unwanted children.””
My hands tightened.
“Don’t talk about them like that.””
He looked at me.
“There it is.””
“What?””
“The same weakness your mother had.””
My breathing stopped.
“You knew my mother.””
Adrian smiled.
“I knew her very well.””
My father moved instantly.
“You stay away from him.””
Adrian laughed.
“Still pretending you’re the hero?””
The two men stared at each other.
Years of hatred passed between them without a single word.
I looked at my father.
“What happened?””
He didn’t answer.
Adrian did.
“Your father discovered what we were doing and wanted out.””
“What were you doing?””
Adrian looked at the photographs.
“Creating a system.””
“For what?””
“For children who had nowhere else to go.””
The way he said it almost sounded noble.
Almost.
Then I noticed something.
Every time he talked about children, he never said “help.””
He said “system.””
“You kidnapped them.””
Adrian’s smile disappeared.
“Careful.””
“You locked them away.””
“You only saw one room.””
My blood went cold.
“There are more?””
My father looked at me.
That was the answer.
There were more.
Much more.
Adrian stepped closer.
“Your sister tried to stop me.””
I laughed.
“Vanessa?””
“Yes.””
“You expect me to believe that?””
“You think she wanted to keep Noah?””
I hesitated.
Adrian continued.
“She was trying to protect him.””
My mind flashed back.
Vanessa saying she was going to fix it.
Her fear.
Her warning.
Her running.
“What did you do to her?””
Adrian smiled slightly.
“Your sister made mistakes.””
My father looked terrified.
“What did you do?””
Adrian didn’t answer.
Instead, he looked at me.
“You have something I need.””
I held the folder tighter.
“No.””
His eyes dropped to it.
“Your father gave you the archive.””
I said nothing.
Adrian nodded.
“He always was predictable.””
Suddenly, my phone buzzed.
Agent Morgan.
I had forgotten my location was being tracked.
Adrian noticed.
His face changed.
“You brought them.””
The guards moved.
My father grabbed my shoulder.
“Run.””
Everything happened at once.
A shout.
A crash.
A gunshot.
I ran.
Not because I was brave.
Because my father pushed me.
We moved through the warehouse as security flooded the room.
Behind us, Adrian shouted:
“Don’t let him leave with the file!””
My father grabbed a side door.
“This way.””
We escaped into the alley.
Rain hit my face.
I turned toward him.
“Why did you leave me?””
He stopped.
The question hurt him.
Good.
It should have.
“I didn’t.””
“Then what was the funeral?””
He looked away.
“Your mother’s death wasn’t an accident.””
I waited.
He swallowed.
“I disappeared because I found out Vanessa was next.””
My heart stopped.
“Next?””
He nodded.
“She wasn’t helping Adrian.””
“Then why did she hide Noah?””
His expression broke.
“Because she was trying to save him.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“She was trapped.””
“By who?””
My father looked back toward the warehouse.
“By the same person who killed your mother.””
I felt the answer before he said it.
“Adrian?””
My father nodded.
Then my phone rang.
Agent Morgan.
I answered.
Her voice was urgent.
“Marcus, where are you?””
I looked at my father.
Then back at the warehouse.
“Agent Morgan…”
“What?””
I heard panic in her voice.
“Your sister was found.””
My stomach dropped.
“Where?””
A pause.
Then:
“She’s at the hospital.””
“Is she alive?””
“Yes.””
Another pause.
“But Marcus…”
“What?””
“She woke up twenty minutes ago.””
My grip tightened.
“What did she say?””
Agent Morgan’s voice became quiet.
“She asked for you.””
I waited.
Then she said:
“And she said the person who attacked her was not Adrian Vale.””
I froze.
“Who was it?””
The answer came.
May you like
A name I never expected.
“Your mother.””
