Chapter 11: The Final Choice

The note bothered me more than the kidnapping.

Because it meant someone wanted me to make a decision.

Not react.

Not chase.

Choose.

And whoever was behind this knew exactly how to manipulate me.

They knew my weakness.

My family.

My daughter.

My need to save everyone.

Agent Morgan examined the note.

“This is psychological.””

I stared at her.

“You mean they’re playing with me.””

“Yes.””

My father looked around the room.

“No.””

Everyone turned.

“What?””

He pointed toward the walls.

“This isn’t just a message.””

He walked closer.

“These symbols.””

I followed his eyes.

Small markings.

Almost invisible.

Carved into the wood.

“What are they?””

My father’s face changed.

“Instructions.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Richard.””

He looked at her.

“You knew?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

He touched one of the symbols.

“Adrian didn’t create this.””

My stomach dropped.

“Then who did?””

He looked at me.

“Your grandfather.””

Silence.

The same answer again.

A family secret older than any of us.

Agent Morgan immediately photographed everything.

“Marcus, we need to leave.””

“No.””

She looked at me.

“We need a better plan.””

“No.””

My voice was calm.

Too calm.

“I’m finding Lily.””

My father stepped beside me.

“So am I.””

I looked at him.

“You don’t get to play hero.””

He accepted the words.

“I know.””

That surprised me.

He looked toward the empty room.

“But I get to be her grandfather.””

We discovered the location hidden in the symbols.

A second property.

Not far away.

An underground facility beneath an old church.

The kind of place nobody would search.

By midnight, the FBI surrounded the location.

But I knew something was wrong.

Adrian wanted us there.

He wanted us to find him.

And that meant he was ready.

Before entering, Agent Morgan grabbed my shoulder.

“Marcus.””

I looked at her.

“You cannot let your emotions control you.””

I nodded.

“I know.””

“No.””

She looked at me seriously.

“You don’t.””

A pause.

“You are not walking into this as an investigator.””

I understood.

“I’m walking in as a father.””

“Yes.””

She released my shoulder.

“And that makes you dangerous.””

The underground facility was enormous.

Not a basement.

Not a hidden room.

A full operation.

Computers.

Files.

Rooms.

Everything.

Children’s drawings covered one wall.

Thousands.

My chest hurt.

Then we found Lily.

A glass room.

She was sitting on a chair.

Reading a book.

Alive.

Safe.

My entire body relaxed.

“Lily.””

Her head snapped up.

“Daddy!””

She ran toward me.

The door opened.

I grabbed her.

I held her so tightly she complained.

“Daddy, you’re hurting me.””

I immediately let go.

“I’m sorry.””

She smiled.

“I knew you would come.””

I cried.

I didn’t care who saw.

Then Lily whispered:

“Daddy.””

“What?””

She looked around.

“Grandma is sad.””

Everything stopped.

I looked at Agent Morgan.

“What did she say?””

Lily pointed behind me.

My blood froze.

A woman stood at the end of the hallway.

Older.

Gray hair.

Tears in her eyes.

My mother.

Emily Reed.

Alive.

She looked at me.

And whispered:

“I’m sorry.””

I couldn’t move.

Twenty years.

Twenty years of questions.

Twenty years of anger.

And now she was standing ten feet away.

Alive.

“Why?””

That was all I could say.

“Why did you leave me?””

Her face broke.

“Because I thought leaving you alive was better than letting them use you.””

I shook my head.

“You let me think you were dead.””

“I know.””

“You let me hate you.””

“I know.””

“Why?””

She looked at Lily.

“Because I knew one day they would come for your child.””

My blood ran cold.

“You knew?””

She nodded.

“I knew the family would continue.””

“What family?””

She looked behind me.

At the dark hallway.

Then said:

“The one you still haven’t found.””

A voice came from the shadows.

A voice I had never heard.

But everyone else reacted.

My father.

Vanessa.

My mother.

All froze.

An old man stepped forward.

And my father whispered:

“No.””

The man smiled.

“Hello, Richard.””

May you like

My father looked like he had seen a ghost.

“Dad.””
