Chapter 13: The Heir Who Refused

The screens kept flashing.

My name.

My face.

My entire life reduced to a single word.

SUCCESSOR.

I stared at the message until it stopped looking like letters and started looking like a threat.

Thomas Reed stood in the center of the room, watching me.

Waiting.

That was the worst part.

He wasn’t angry.

He wasn’t afraid.

He was confident.

Because he believed he had already won.

“Turn it off,” I said.

Nobody moved.

Thomas smiled.

“You still don’t understand.””

“I said turn it off.””

“This was never about force.””

He walked closer.

“It was always about inheritance.””

My stomach twisted.

“I don’t want anything from you.””

“That is exactly why you are the right person.””

I laughed.

A cold, empty sound.

“You kidnapped my daughter to prove I’m qualified?””

“No.””

His eyes moved to Lily.

“I brought your daughter here because I needed you to see the truth.””

“What truth?””

“That every person in this room has failed.””

The silence was heavy.

Thomas pointed at my father.

“Richard failed because he ran.””

Then Vanessa.

“She failed because she tried to repair something she didn’t understand.””

Then my mother.

“She failed because guilt made her weak.””

Finally, he looked at me.

“And you failed because you believed you were different.””

My hands clenched.

“I am different.””

“No.””

His voice became softer.

“You are exactly like them.””

I stepped forward.

“No.””

“You protect people.””

“Yes.””

“You sacrifice yourself.””

“Yes.””

“You believe you can save everyone.””

I looked at Lily.

At my daughter.

At the reason I was still standing.

Thomas smiled.

“That is the Reed family curse.””

The alarm continued.

Agent Morgan moved closer to me.

Quietly.

“We need to get Lily out.””

I nodded.

But Thomas noticed.

Of course he noticed.

“You still think this is about escape.””

He pressed a button.

The screens changed.

Security footage appeared.

Hundreds of cameras.

Different locations.

Different buildings.

Different children.

My blood turned cold.

“How many?””

Thomas looked at the screens.

“Enough.””

Vanessa whispered:

“Oh my God.””

My mother looked sick.

“You never stopped.””

Thomas ignored her.

“The world creates forgotten children every day.””

His voice carried through the room.

“And forgotten things are easy to control.””

I stared at him.

“You are insane.””

“No.””

He looked almost offended.

“I am realistic.””

He walked toward the screens.

“Governments lose children.””

“Families abandon children.””

“Systems fail children.””

He turned.

“I created a system that never fails.””

I looked at Lily.

“She’s a child.””

Thomas’s expression softened.

“That is why she matters.””

My father moved instantly.

“Stay away from her.””

Thomas looked at him.

“Still pretending to be her protector?””

My father’s face tightened.

“You lost the right to call yourself family.””

Thomas smiled.

“Did I?””

Then he looked at me.

“Ask him.””

I turned.

“What?””

Thomas’s smile disappeared.

“Ask your father what happened the night your mother died.””

My heart stopped.

I looked at Richard.

Again.

“No.””

My father looked down.

“Richard.””

My voice shook.

“Tell me.””

He closed his eyes.

“I was there.””

The room went silent.

My mother looked at him.

“You promised.””

“I know.””

I stepped closer.

“What does that mean?””

My father swallowed.

“The night your mother died…”

He looked at me.

“I was supposed to meet her.””

My chest tightened.

“Why?””

“Because she found evidence against Thomas.””

I looked at my grandfather.

“And?””

My father’s voice broke.

“She never made it.””

My mother whispered:

“Richard…”

“I thought she was dead.””

My father looked destroyed.

“But Thomas told me if I exposed him, Marcus would be next.””

I stared.

“So you disappeared.””

“Yes.””

“You let me think everyone was gone.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

His eyes filled.

“Because I was a coward.””

The honesty hurt.

More than another excuse would have.

Thomas watched silently.

Enjoying every second.

Then he said:

“And now you understand.””

I turned.

“Understand what?””

“That every Reed eventually chooses the family.””

I looked at Lily.

Then back at him.

“No.””

Thomas frowned.

“No?””

I stepped forward.

“I choose her.””

The room went quiet.

“I choose my daughter.””

His expression changed.

“You think one child changes everything?””

“Yes.””

I looked at every person in the room.

“My family spent decades choosing secrets.””

I pointed at Thomas.

“You chose power.””

Then my father.

“You chose fear.””

Then Vanessa.

“You chose silence.””

Finally my mother.

“You chose guilt.””

My voice shook.

“But Lily?””

I held my daughter’s hand.

“She gets a choice.””

Thomas stared at me.

For the first time, he looked uncertain.

Agent Morgan moved.

Fast.

She grabbed a nearby terminal.

Thomas immediately reacted.

“No.””

Security doors began closing.

The facility shook.

A warning sounded.

“Lockdown initiated.””

My mother looked around.

“He’s destroying the evidence.””

Thomas smiled.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“I’m destroying the past.””

The screens began deleting files.

One by one.

Everything disappeared.

Agent Morgan shouted:

“We need the main server!””

Thomas looked at me.

“You can stop it.””

Everyone froze.

I stared.

“What?””

“The system recognizes you.””

I looked at the screen.

My name.

My identity.

My access.

“No.””

Thomas stepped closer.

“You can save everything.””

“And become you?””

His expression changed.

Just slightly.

Because he knew.

He had finally found the thing I would refuse.

“I am not you.””

I walked toward the terminal.

Thomas smiled.

“Good.””

I stopped.

“I’m not saving your system.””

I looked at Agent Morgan.

“I’m opening everything.””

Her eyes widened.

“What?””

“All files.””

My grandfather’s face changed.

“No.””

I placed my hand on the scanner.

The system recognized me.

ACCESS GRANTED.

I pressed the command.

PUBLIC RELEASE.

Thomas lunged forward.

But it was too late.

Every file.

Every name.

Every location.

Every secret.

Was sent.

The screens changed.

UPLOAD COMPLETE.

Thomas stared.

“You destroyed everything.””

“No.””

I looked at him.

“I exposed it.””

May you like

For the first time…

Thomas Reed looked afraid.
