Chapter 9: The Enemy Who Sat at the Table

“You always were too sentimental, Adrian.””

The voice echoed through the warehouse.

Leo stood completely still.

He knew that voice.

Everyone in the Castillo family knew that voice.

Not because it belonged to someone famous.

Because it belonged to someone trusted.

Someone who had been invited into their homes.

Someone who had sat at their dinner table.

Someone who had watched Leo grow up.

The figure stepped forward into the dim red light.

And Leo felt his stomach drop.

“Grandfather?””

The man stopped.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Adrian’s face had lost all color.

Vincent immediately moved in front of Leo.

“Stay behind me.””

But Leo barely heard him.

Because the man standing across from them was not a stranger.

It was Richard Castillo.

Adrian’s father.

Leo’s grandfather.

The man whose photographs filled the Castillo estate.

The founder of Castillo Holdings.

The man everyone said built an empire from nothing.

Richard looked at Leo with a strange sadness.

Not anger.

Not guilt.

Something more complicated.

“Leo.””

The boy stared at him.

“You’re alive.””

Richard gave a small smile.

“Unfortunately, people have been saying I’m gone for years.””

Adrian stepped forward.

“What are you doing here?””

Richard looked at his son.

The relationship between them was obvious.

There was history.

Pain.

Things neither of them had ever spoken about.

“You finally told him.””

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“You don’t get to talk about honesty.””

Richard looked around.

“Still protecting him?””

“He is my son.””

“And that is exactly your weakness.””

Leo felt those words.

Not because they were cruel.

Because they sounded familiar.

Too familiar.

Like something Marcus had said.

Like something Isabella had warned him about.

“You were the one.””

Everyone turned toward Ethan.

Richard looked at him.

“You should have stayed quiet.””

Ethan laughed bitterly.

“That’s what you always told everyone.””

Leo looked at Ethan.

“You knew?””

Ethan looked at him.

“Yes.””

“How long?””

“Years.””

The answer hurt.

Leo looked at his father.

Then his grandfather.

Then Ethan.

Everyone seemed to know pieces of the story.

Everyone except him.

Richard walked closer.

“Leo, there are things you don’t understand.””

Leo stared at him.

“Then explain.””

Richard stopped.

For the first time, the powerful founder of Castillo Holdings looked uncertain.

Leo continued.

“Explain why my mother disappeared.””

Silence.

The question had been waiting years.

Not just from Leo.

From everyone.

Richard looked away.

“Your mother was stubborn.””

Adrian’s expression changed.

“Don’t.””

Richard ignored him.

“She believed the world could be fixed by exposing every secret.””

Leo’s hands tightened.

“She was trying to protect us.””

“No.””

Richard’s voice became colder.

“She was trying to destroy everything your grandfather built.””

The words shocked Leo.

“That’s not true.””

Richard looked at him.

“You think you know your family?””

A pause.

“You know what we wanted you to know.””

Leo felt anger rising.

“No.””

Richard stepped closer.

“You grew up believing Castillo Holdings was a success story.””

He looked around the warehouse.

“But every empire has a price.””

Adrian interrupted.

“Enough.””

Richard turned.

“You still don’t understand.””

“No,” Adrian said.

“I understand perfectly.””

The two men stared at each other.

Father and son.

Two people who had spent years hiding the same wounds.

Richard’s expression hardened.

“You were always like your mother.””

Leo noticed Adrian react.

Not with anger.

With sadness.

Richard continued.

“Always believing people deserved the truth.””

“And you weren’t?””

Richard smiled faintly.

“I believed the truth had consequences.””

Leo looked at him.

“What did you do?””

The question was quiet.

But everyone heard it.

Richard looked at his grandson.

And for a moment, Leo saw something unexpected.

Regret.

“I made a decision.””

“What decision?””

Richard looked at Adrian.

“One that protected the company.””

Leo’s heart sank.

“And my mother?””

Richard said nothing.

That was enough.

Adrian stepped forward.

“You knew where she was.””

Richard looked at his son.

“Yes.””

The warehouse went silent.

Leo felt like he could not breathe.

“You knew?””

Adrian’s voice shook.

“You knew all these years?””

“Yes.””

“Where was she?””

Richard looked down.

“I don’t know.””

Nobody moved.

Leo frowned.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

Richard looked at him.

“She disappeared from the people who took her.””

“Who took her?””

Richard’s eyes moved toward Marcus.

But Marcus was nowhere to be seen.

Gone.

Leo noticed.

The man who had started this entire chain of secrets had vanished during the confusion.

Vincent immediately checked his phone.

“Mr. Castillo.””

“What?””

“Marcus escaped.””

Adrian closed his eyes briefly.

Richard sighed.

“He always was good at leaving others to clean up his mess.””

Leo looked at his grandfather.

“You worked with him.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Richard looked at the floor.

“Because I thought I could control him.””

Adrian laughed once.

A cold, painful sound.

“You said the same thing about everyone.””

Richard looked at him.

“I was trying to protect this family.””

“No.””

Adrian’s voice became stronger.

“You were protecting the company.””

The words hit.

Because everyone knew there was a difference.

Leo looked at his father.

For the first time, he saw the years of anger Adrian had carried.

Not toward business rivals.

Toward his own father.

Richard looked at Leo.

“You should hate me.””

Leo was surprised.

The statement was so direct.

“So you admit it?””

Richard nodded slowly.

“I made mistakes.””

“Mistakes?””

Leo’s voice cracked.

“My mother disappeared.””

“I know.””

“You hid it.””

“Yes.””

“You let Dad believe he failed.””

Richard looked at Adrian.

“I wanted him to understand the cost of leadership.””

Leo stared.

“That’s not leadership.””

The words surprised everyone.

Especially Richard.

Leo stepped forward.

“That’s hurting people.””

The old man looked at him.

And for a moment, he did not look like an empire builder.

He looked old.

Tired.

Regretful.

Then Richard reached into his coat.

Everyone reacted immediately.

Vincent moved.

But Richard pulled out only a small envelope.

He handed it to Leo.

“This is the last thing your mother left behind.””

Leo looked at it.

Another letter.

Another secret.

“How do you have this?””

Richard answered quietly.

“Because she trusted me.””

Nobody expected that.

Leo opened the envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

Not a document.

Not evidence.

A family picture.

His mother.

His father.

And a baby Leo.

On the back was handwriting.

Leo recognized it immediately.

His mother’s.

*For Leo.*

His hands trembled.

He turned the photo over.

A sentence was written there.

*The greatest danger to our family is not the person who hates us. It is the person who believes they are saving us.*

Leo looked up slowly.

Everyone was silent.

Because everyone understood.

The sentence was not about Marcus.

Not about Victoria.

Not even about Richard.

It was about a pattern.

A family where everyone justified their actions as protection.

A family where secrets became weapons.

Then Richard spoke.

“There is one more thing you need to know.””

Adrian looked at him.

“What?””

Richard looked directly at Leo.

“Your mother did not disappear because she was taken.””

Leo froze.

“What?””

“She disappeared because she found out something.””

“What?””

Richard’s eyes moved toward Adrian.

And the pain in his expression returned.

“She discovered who ordered the first attack against your family.””

Adrian’s face changed.

Because he knew.

Leo saw it.

His father knew.

“Dad?””

Adrian didn’t answer.

Leo’s voice became quieter.

“Who?””

The warehouse fell silent.

Then Adrian finally spoke.

A name.

A name that made Vincent look away.

A name that made Ethan close his eyes.

A name Leo never expected.

“Your mother discovered that the person who wanted her gone…”

May you like

Adrian swallowed.

“…was me.””
