Chapter 8: The Truth About Leo’s Mother
“Your father never told you why your mother disappeared.””
The words struck harder than the sound of the gunshot.
Leo stood frozen in the darkness.
His mind rejected them before he could even understand them.
His mother.
A subject nobody in the Castillo family ever discussed.
A name that existed only in old photographs and quiet moments.
A memory wrapped in silence.
“Who are you?”” Leo whispered.
The person holding his arm did not answer.
Around them, the warehouse had become chaos.
Footsteps moved across the concrete floor.
Someone shouted.
A metal object crashed against the ground.
Then Vincent’s voice came through the earpiece again.
“Leo! Stay where you are!””
The person beside him tightened their grip.
“Do not answer him.””
Leo’s heart raced.
He pulled away.
“Let go of me.””
The grip released immediately.
Then the emergency lights flickered on.
A dim red glow filled the warehouse.
And Leo finally saw who was standing beside him.
Ethan Cross.
His father’s former assistant.
The man who had betrayed Castillo Holdings.
The man who had placed the tracker.
Leo stared at him.
“You.””
Ethan looked exhausted.
Not like a villain.
Like someone who had been running from something for a long time.
“I know what you think.””
“You tracked me.””
“Yes.””
“You gave people my location.””
Ethan lowered his eyes.
“Yes.””
Leo stepped back.
“Then why should I listen to anything you say?””
“Because I was wrong.””
The answer surprised him.
Ethan looked toward the darkness where Marcus and Isabella had disappeared.
“Everything I did was because I believed I was protecting someone.””
“Who?””
Ethan looked at Leo.
“Your mother.””
The warehouse seemed to stop moving.
Leo forgot everything else.
“What did you say?””
Ethan took a slow breath.
“Your mother is alive.””
For a moment, Leo could not react.
The words did not make sense.
His mother.
Alive.
The woman everyone told him he lost when he was a baby.
The woman whose face he only knew from pictures.
“No.””
Ethan looked at him sadly.
“I knew you would say that.””
“My father said she died.””
Ethan did not respond.
That silence was enough.
Leo’s chest tightened.
“You’re lying.””
“I wish I was.””
Before Leo could ask anything else, a figure appeared from the other side of the warehouse.
Adrian.
Behind him were Vincent and security personnel.
The moment Adrian saw Ethan standing beside Leo, his expression changed.
Not anger.
Shock.
“Ethan.””
The former assistant looked at him.
“Hello, Adrian.””
The way he said the name was different.
Not respectful.
Not professional.
Personal.
Leo looked between them.
“You know?””
Adrian did not answer.
“Dad.””
The question in Leo’s voice forced him to respond.
“Yes.””
Leo’s face changed.
“You knew?””
Adrian looked at him.
“Leo—”
“You knew Ethan knew about Mom?””
A painful silence followed.
Vincent looked away.
Because he already understood.
Leo stepped back.
“Everyone knew something except me.””
Adrian moved closer.
“Listen to me.””
“No.””
Leo’s voice cracked.
Not from anger.
From hurt.
“You keep saying you’re protecting me.””
A pause.
“But all you’ve done is hide things.””
Adrian stopped.
Because he knew Leo was right.
The hardest thing about being a parent was realizing that protection could become another form of isolation.
Ethan looked at Adrian.
“You should have told him.””
Adrian’s eyes hardened.
“You do not get to judge me.””
“Why?””
Ethan’s voice rose.
“Because I made mistakes?””
A bitter laugh escaped him.
“Fine.””
He looked at Leo.
“But at least my mistakes came from fear.””
Leo stared.
“What happened to my mother?””
Adrian closed his eyes briefly.
Then he answered.
“Her name was Elena.””
Leo felt strange hearing it.
Not because it was unfamiliar.
Because it was the first time anyone had said it to him like she was a real person.
“Your mother discovered something.””
“What?””
Adrian looked at the warehouse around them.
“Something connected to Castillo Holdings.””
“Like Isabella?””
Adrian nodded.
“Yes.””
Leo’s voice became quieter.
“What?””
Adrian hesitated.
Then finally said:
“Your mother discovered that someone inside the company was using Castillo Holdings to move illegal money.””
Leo stared.
“Someone was stealing?””
“More than stealing.””
Adrian looked at him.
“They were building a hidden operation inside my company.””
Leo thought about Marcus.
Victoria.
Ethan.
Everyone connected.
“And Mom found out?””
“Yes.””
“What happened?””
Adrian looked away.
“She wanted to expose them.””
“But?””
“But someone found out before she could.””
Leo swallowed.
“Who?””
Adrian didn’t answer.
Ethan did.
“Your grandfather.””
The words changed everything.
Leo looked at him.
“My grandfather?””
Ethan nodded.
“Your grandfather knew someone was corrupting the company.””
“Then why didn’t he stop them?””
“Because he trusted the wrong person.””
“Who?””
Ethan looked at Adrian.
The silence was unbearable.
Leo followed his gaze.
And slowly understood.
“No.””
Adrian immediately shook his head.
“No.””
“Then why is he looking at you?””
Adrian stepped forward.
“Leo, your grandfather suspected me.””
Leo froze.
“What?””
“He thought I knew more than I admitted.””
“Did you?””
Adrian said nothing.
That was the answer.
Leo felt like the ground had shifted beneath him.
His father.
The person he trusted most.
Had another secret.
“Dad.””
Adrian looked at him.
“I was twenty-eight.””
His voice was quieter now.
“I had just taken over part of the company. I was trying to protect the family name.””
“By hiding things?””
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt more than a lie.
“I thought I could solve everything myself.””
Leo looked away.
“And Mom?””
Adrian’s face changed.
“She was caught between people fighting for control.””
“What happened to her?””
A long pause.
Then:
“She disappeared because she was trying to protect you.””
Leo looked up.
“Me?””
“Yes.””
Adrian’s voice broke slightly.
“Your mother knew someone was watching our family. She knew they could use you against us.””
Leo stared.
“So she left?””
“She made a choice.””
Adrian looked at him.
“She wanted you to grow up away from danger.””
Leo’s eyes burned.
“But she never came back.””
“No.””
“Why?””
Nobody answered.
Then Ethan spoke.
“Because someone made sure she couldn’t.””
Everyone turned.
Adrian’s expression changed.
“What are you saying?””
Ethan looked directly at him.
“I found the records.””
“What records?””
“The ones your father buried.””
The warehouse became silent.
Ethan reached into his jacket and removed a small envelope.
He handed it to Leo.
“Your mother left this.””
Leo stared at it.
“My mother?””
“Yes.””
His hands shook as he opened it.
Inside was a single piece of paper.
Only a few words.
But they were enough to make him stop breathing.
*Leo, if you are reading this, it means Adrian finally told you the truth.*
His eyes moved lower.
*I need you to know something.*
A tear formed before he even reached the final sentence.
*Your father did not abandon me. He tried to save me.*
Leo looked up.
Confused.
The letter continued.
*But he was too late.*
The paper trembled in his hands.
Then he saw the final line.
*The person who took me was someone we trusted completely.*
A sound came from behind them.
Everyone turned.
A shadow stood near the warehouse entrance.
A familiar voice filled the room.
“You always were too sentimental, Adrian.””
Leo’s blood went cold.
Because he recognized that voice.
It belonged to someone who had been beside his family for years.
Someone everyone trusted.
Someone nobody suspected.
The figure stepped into the red light.
And Leo realized the truth was much closer than anyone imagined.
Because the person who destroyed his family…
May you like
was not an enemy.
It was someone who had been invited inside.
