Chapter 9: The Man Who Knew the Truth First

Luca stared at the photograph until his eyes burned.

His father.

Standing behind him in the hospital room.

Watching.

Waiting.

The image was impossible.

Because the man in the photograph was supposed to be dead.

His adoptive father had died seven years before the accident.

At least, that was what Luca believed.

Everything he knew had become a question.

Every memory had become a possibility.

The hospital room.

The doctors.

The accident.

His mother.

Victor.

Even his own name.

But one thing remained clear.

Someone had spent twelve years keeping him away from the truth.

And now Luca knew why.

Because the truth had been dangerous.

“Ethan.””

His voice was quiet.

But Ethan immediately looked up.

“What did you find?””

Luca turned the photograph around.

For several seconds, Ethan said nothing.

Then his face changed.

“That’s your father.””

“Yes.””

“He was supposed to be dead.””

“Yes.””

Ethan looked at the image again.

“Luca…”

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

Ethan pointed at the photograph.

“This was taken after your accident.””

Luca nodded.

“According to the timestamp.””

“Then your father was alive.””

The words were simple.

But they opened another door.

A door Luca was afraid to walk through.

Because if his father had survived…

Where was he?

And why did he leave?

They searched the hospital records first.

Not the official ones.

The hidden ones.

The ones that existed in places people forgot about.

Old archives.

Private backups.

Deleted files.

By sunrise, Ethan found something.

A patient transfer document.

Luca stared at the screen.

“What is that?””

“A transfer request.””

“From the night of the accident?””

“Yes.””

“Who authorized it?””

Ethan looked at him.

“Your father.””

Luca felt his stomach tighten.

“My father moved me?””

“Yes.””

“Where?””

Ethan hesitated.

“An underground medical facility.””

Luca stared.

“That doesn’t exist.””

“It was closed fifteen years ago.””

“Who operated it?””

Ethan didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

Luca already knew.

The Costello family.

His father.

His empire.

His secrets.

“What happened there?””

Ethan opened another file.

A medical report.

Not from the hospital.

From the private facility.

Luca read it.

Then read it again.

The words made no sense.

*Spinal damage: severe but inconsistent with permanent paralysis.*

He looked up.

“So the doctors were right?””

Ethan frowned.

“About what?””

“That my injury was real.””

“Yes.””

Luca looked back at the report.

“But the paralysis wasn’t supposed to be permanent.””

Ethan nodded.

“That appears to be the case.””

Luca felt something strange.

Not relief.

Not anger.

Something closer to grief.

Because for twelve years, he had hated his body.

Blamed himself.

Blamed fate.

Blamed the accident.

But his body had not betrayed him.

Someone else had.

Mrs. Reyes entered the room carrying another envelope.

“I found this.””

Luca looked at her.

“Where?””

“Inside Daniel’s old belongings.””

She placed it on the desk.

“I kept it hidden because I was afraid.””

Luca opened it.

Inside was a letter.

From Daniel.

This time, it was addressed to him.

*Luca,*

*If you are reading this, then you know enough to be angry.*

Luca almost smiled.

Daniel knew him well.

*You will believe everyone betrayed you. You will believe your mother lied. You will believe your father abandoned you.*

His fingers tightened.

*But before you judge them, understand this: they were fighting a war you never knew existed.*

He continued.

*The night of your accident, we discovered someone inside the family had been planning to take control of everything.*

*The company. The money. The legacy.*

*But most importantly, you.*

Luca looked up.

“Me?””

Mrs. Reyes nodded.

He did.

*Your father realized the only way to protect you was to make everyone believe you were no longer capable of challenging them.*

Luca stopped.

The same truth his mother had told him.

The wheelchair.

The weakness.

The image of a broken man.

It had been a shield.

*Your mother made the hardest decision. She allowed the world to believe you were permanently damaged because the people hunting you only feared one thing.*

The next line made Luca’s breath catch.

*A Costello who could still fight.*

He continued.

*But there was one person your father could not protect you from.*

A blank space.

Then:

*Someone who knew you better than anyone.*

Luca stared.

“Who?””

Mrs. Reyes shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

Luca turned the page.

The final sentence was written larger.

As if Daniel wanted to make sure it was impossible to miss.

*The person who betrayed you was not trying to destroy the Costello empire.*

*They were trying to inherit it.*

That afternoon, Luca returned to the place where everything began.

The road.

The accident site.

The place he had avoided for twelve years.

The rain had stopped, but the road was still dark beneath the clouds.

Ethan stood nearby.

“You don’t have to do this.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I spent twelve years running from this place.””

Luca looked at the road ahead.

“I want to see what I missed.””

They found the location where the car had left the road.

The barrier had been replaced years ago.

The trees had grown.

The world had moved on.

But Luca had not.

He looked at the ground.

Then noticed something.

A small metal object buried near the edge of the road.

Ethan picked it up.

A broken piece of a vehicle.

Not Luca’s car.

Another vehicle.

“What is it?””

Ethan examined it.

“This isn’t from your accident.””

“How do you know?””

“Because this model wasn’t released until two years later.””

Luca stared.

Someone had planted evidence.

Or removed it.

Either way, the accident scene had been altered.

Then Ethan found something else.

A small camera hidden inside a damaged tree.

Luca looked at it.

“Security?””

“No.””

Ethan checked the device.

“It’s old.””

“Can it work?””

“Maybe.””

They brought it back to the estate.

Hours later, the recovered footage appeared.

A grainy black-and-white image.

The road.

The night of the accident.

Luca watched silently.

His car appeared.

Then another vehicle.

Following closely behind.

The second vehicle stopped.

A person stepped out.

Not Victor.

Not Daniel.

Not a stranger.

A familiar figure.

Ethan froze.

“Luca…”

“I see him.””

The person walked toward Luca’s car.

Opened the driver’s door.

Then something happened.

The footage glitched.

The screen went black.

When it returned, the person was gone.

But Luca had already seen enough.

The person had been wearing a watch.

A specific watch.

One Luca remembered.

Because his father gave the same model to only three people.

Himself.

Victor.

And his mother.

Ethan looked at him.

“Who was it?””

Luca didn’t answer immediately.

Because he finally understood.

The person who had caused the accident.

The person who had manipulated everything.

The person who had been hiding behind every secret.

Was not a stranger.

It was someone who loved him.

Someone who had held him as a child.

Someone who knew every weakness.

His mother.

Or so the evidence suggested.

But before Luca could speak, the front door of the estate opened.

A security alarm sounded.

Ethan reached for his weapon.

“Someone is inside.””

Luca turned.

A voice echoed from the hallway.

“Luca.””

He froze.

Because he knew that voice.

Not from a memory.

Not from a recording.

From reality.

His father.

Alive.

Standing at the entrance.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

Everyone in the room stopped breathing.

Luca stared.

“You’re dead.””

His father looked at him.

“I had to be.””

Luca’s hands tightened.

“You watched me suffer.””

His father lowered his eyes.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

A long silence.

Then his father said:

“Because your mother wasn’t the one who caused the accident.””

Luca said nothing.

His father stepped forward.

“She was trying to stop it.””

The room went quiet.

“Then who did?””

His father looked directly at him.

And the answer destroyed the last piece of certainty Luca had left.

“The person who took my name.””

A pause.

“The person who became the head of your family.””

Luca’s expression changed.

“Who?””

His father whispered:

“Your grandfather.””

The man Luca had buried twenty years ago.

The man who supposedly died before any of this began.

Then his father added:

“And he’s still alive.””
