Chapter 7: The Bloodline Behind the Betrayal
The name on the paper refused to make sense.
Luca stared at it until the ink blurred.
*Costello.*
Not Victor.
Not Moretti.
Not an enemy hiding outside the family.
Costello.
His own name.
The name his father carried.
The name his mother protected.
The name Luca had spent his entire life building into a symbol of power.
Now it looked like a warning.
“Luca.””
Ethan’s voice pulled him back.
The security team had finally reached the storage building. Flashlights moved through the darkness. People shouted. Radios crackled.
But Luca barely heard any of it.
His attention stayed on the letter.
His mother’s handwriting.
Impossible.
She had been gone for fifteen years.
She could not have written this after his accident.
She could not have known what would happen.
Yet somehow, she had.
“Luca, are you hurt?””
Ethan crouched beside him.
“No.””
“Are you sure?””
Luca folded the paper.
“My mother knew.””
Ethan looked at him.
“Knew what?””
“Something about my family.””
A pause.
Then Ethan asked the question Luca was avoiding.
“Your father?””
Luca looked toward the broken window where Victor had disappeared.
“I don’t know.””
That answer scared Ethan more than anything else.
Because Luca Costello always knew.
He was a man who made decisions quickly.
A man who saw patterns before others even noticed them.
Now he looked lost.
And Ethan understood why.
This was not a business problem.
Not a rival.
Not a negotiation.
This was the foundation of Luca’s entire life.
They returned to the estate under heavy security.
No one spoke during the drive.
Amelia sat beside her mother in the back seat.
Luca watched them through the mirror.
The girl who had entered his garden three days earlier had somehow become the center of a mystery that involved billion-dollar companies, hidden crimes, and a family secret buried for years.
It was absurd.
But every piece connected to her.
Daniel Reyes.
The missing files.
The hidden notes.
The truth about his accident.
When they reached the house, Luca stopped before entering.
The estate looked different now.
The same walls.
The same rooms.
The same expensive furniture.
But he no longer saw a home.
He saw a place filled with secrets.
“Mrs. Reyes.””
She turned.
“Yes?””
“Come with me.””
She looked nervous.
“Why?””
“Because I need answers.””
Her eyes moved to Amelia.
“My daughter—”
“She stays with Ethan.””
Amelia immediately shook her head.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
“I want to know too.””
Mrs. Reyes knelt beside her.
“Amelia.””
“No.””
The girl looked at Luca.
“My dad disappeared because of this.””
Her voice trembled.
“I deserve to know why.””
Luca looked at her.
Eight years old.
Standing in the middle of a world far too dangerous for her.
Yet somehow braver than most adults he knew.
“Ethan.””
“Yes?””
“Make sure she is safe.””
Ethan nodded.
Amelia looked disappointed.
But she did not argue.
The archive room became their temporary command center.
Luca placed the letter on the table.
Mrs. Reyes stared at it.
“Where did you get that?””
“Someone left it after the attack.””
Her face changed.
“Who?””
“I don’t know.””
She stepped closer.
Then she touched the edge of the paper.
Not the words.
The paper itself.
“This is old.””
“Yes.””
“This was written years ago.””
Luca watched her.
“You recognize it?””
Mrs. Reyes looked away.
“My husband had something similar.””
“What?””
“A letter.””
“To whom?””
She swallowed.
“To you.””
Luca froze.
“Daniel wrote me a letter?””
“No.””
Her voice lowered.
“He wrote a letter for you.””
“Where is it?””
“I don’t know.””
“You don’t know?””
Mrs. Reyes shook her head.
“Daniel hid things. He never told me everything because he believed knowing less would keep me alive.””
“And you accepted that?””
“No.””
A tear appeared in her eye.
“I hated it.””
She sat down.
“I hated that my husband trusted secrets more than he trusted me.””
Luca remained silent.
“But after he disappeared, I understood.””
“Because someone came looking for him.””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
She looked at him.
“The first person who came to my house was Victor.””
Luca’s expression hardened.
“What did he want?””
“To know if Daniel left anything behind.””
“And?””
“I lied.””
“Why?””
“Because Daniel told me if Victor ever came asking…”
She paused.
“He was already too late.””
Hours passed as they searched through old records.
Ethan recovered files from the estate backup system.
Most had been deleted.
But Luca had spent years building a company based on protecting information.
There were always copies.
Hidden places.
Emergency backups.
Forgotten corners.
Near midnight, Ethan found something.
“Luca.””
The tone made him look up.
“What?””
“I found a file.””
“Daniel?””
“No.””
Ethan turned the laptop.
“Your father.””
The screen showed a private recording.
Dated eleven months before Luca’s accident.
Luca stared.
His father appeared older.
Tired.
But focused.
The man in the video was not the powerful businessman the world knew.
He looked like someone carrying a burden.
“If you are watching this,” his father said, “then something has happened that I failed to prevent.””
Luca went completely still.
The recording continued.
“I spent my life believing money could protect my family.””
His father looked down.
“I was wrong.””
Luca felt his chest tighten.
“I created something dangerous. A system of loyalty where people followed the Costello name without questioning what that name represented.””
A pause.
“And someone used that loyalty against me.””
The screen flickered slightly.
Then his father said the words Luca never expected.
“The greatest threat to this family is not outside our walls.””
Luca looked at Mrs. Reyes.
She looked equally shocked.
The recording continued.
“It is someone who believes they are protecting the Costello legacy.””
The video ended.
Silence.
Ethan slowly closed the laptop.
“Who was he talking about?””
Luca didn’t answer.
Because there was only one person his father trusted enough to handle the company after his death.
One person who believed he knew what was best for the Costello empire.
Victor.
But Victor had already denied being the mastermind.
And Luca had seen fear in his eyes.
Real fear.
“Play it again,” Luca said.
Ethan restarted the recording.
This time Luca watched his father’s face carefully.
Not his words.
His expression.
There.
A moment.
A brief look toward something off-camera.
Fear.
Not anger.
Fear.
“Stop.””
The video froze.
“What?”” Ethan asked.
“Zoom in.””
Ethan adjusted the image.
Behind Luca’s father was a reflection in the glass.
Someone standing in the room.
A person his father was looking at.
Luca stared.
The image was blurry.
But the shape was clear.
A woman.
Ethan frowned.
“Can you identify her?””
Luca said nothing.
Because he already knew.
The woman had the same posture.
The same hair.
The same face.
His mother.
But she had been dead for years.
“Impossible,” Ethan whispered.
Luca leaned closer.
His mother’s reflection.
Standing behind his father.
Alive.
The next morning, Luca received a call.
Unknown number.
He almost ignored it.
Then he answered.
“Hello?””
No one spoke.
Only breathing.
Again.
Like Dr. Hale.
Like before.
“Who is this?””
A woman’s voice finally answered.
Older.
Tired.
Broken.
“Luca.””
The world stopped.
Because he knew that voice.
A voice buried in his memories.
A voice from childhood.
A voice he had not heard since the day of her funeral.
His hand tightened around the phone.
“No.””
A whisper.
“Mom?””
Silence.
Then:
“I’m sorry.””
Luca couldn’t speak.
His mind rejected reality.
“This isn’t possible.””
“I know.””
“Who are you?””
A painful pause.
“I’m the reason you survived.””
Luca looked at Ethan.
At the letter.
At the recording.
Everything suddenly connected into one impossible truth.
“Where are you?””
His mother’s voice trembled.
“I can’t tell you.””
“Why?””
“Because if they know I contacted you…”
The line crackled.
“Luca, listen carefully.””
He leaned closer.
“Your accident was never about taking your legs.””
A pause.
“It was about stopping you from finding out who you really are.””
Luca felt cold.
“What does that mean?””
His mother whispered:
“Your father was not your biological father.””
The call ended.
Luca sat frozen.
For twelve years, he thought he lost his ability to walk.
Now he wondered if he had lost something much bigger.
The truth about who he was.
Then another message appeared on his phone.
From the same unknown number.
A photograph.
A picture of a hospital document.
His birth certificate.
And at the bottom, one name had been crossed out.
The name Costello.
May you like
Replaced with another.
*Luca Moretti.*
