Chapter 4: The Photograph That Was Never Supposed to Exist
The photograph was waiting for Luca in the archive room.
Not on the floor.
Not hidden.
Placed carefully in the center of his father’s old wooden desk.
Like whoever left it there wanted him to find it immediately.
That was what disturbed him most.
A thief took things.
An enemy destroyed things.
But this person had arranged the scene.
They wanted to send a message.
Luca rolled into the archive room with Ethan behind him, his security team standing silently near the entrance.
No one spoke.
Not because they had nothing to say.
Because everyone understood what the photograph meant.
For twelve years, Luca had seen hundreds of images from the night of his accident.
The wrecked car.
The hospital bed.
The doctors standing around him.
The newspaper articles.
The official investigation photos.
But this one was different.
This one had never been part of the record.
Ethan stood beside the desk.
“Are you ready?””
Luca looked at him.
“No.””
Ethan nodded.
Then he turned the photograph around.
And Luca forgot how to breathe.
It showed the road where his car had crashed.
But the accident had not happened yet.
The image was taken earlier.
Much earlier.
Luca recognized the vehicle.
His black sedan.
Parked beside the road.
The driver’s door was open.
And standing next to the car was Victor Moretti.
Luca stared.
“That’s impossible.””
Ethan said nothing.
The photograph was old, slightly faded, but clear enough.
Victor stood beside the vehicle.
And he was not alone.
Another man stood with him.
A man Luca had never seen before.
Or at least, he thought he hadn’t.
“Zoom in,” Luca said.
Ethan placed the image under a magnifying lens from the archive equipment.
The second man’s face became clearer.
Luca’s expression changed.
Because he knew him.
Not personally.
But from somewhere.
“Who is that?”” Ethan asked.
Luca did not answer.
His eyes moved to the corner of the photograph.
There was a timestamp.
The accident happened at 9:40 p.m.
The photograph had been taken at 8:15 p.m.
More than an hour before the crash.
Someone had been waiting.
Someone had been preparing.
“This wasn’t an accident,” Luca whispered.
Ethan looked at him.
“No.””
The word felt heavier than any confirmation he had ever received.
For twelve years, Luca had lived inside a lie.
Now the walls were cracking.
But the truth hiding behind them looked worse.
An hour later, Luca sat in his study with every security report spread across the table.
The official story.
The police report.
The medical report.
The insurance investigation.
All of it.
Every document told the same version.
Too perfect.
Too consistent.
That was the problem.
Real events were messy.
People forgot details.
Witnesses disagreed.
Evidence created questions.
But Luca’s accident had produced a story with no questions.
And now he knew why.
Someone had made sure there were none.
“Ethan.””
“Yes?””
“Who investigated the crash?””
“The police.””
“Who hired the private investigators?””
Ethan looked down.
“Victor.””
Luca closed his eyes.
“Of course.””
The silence between them was uncomfortable.
Then Ethan spoke.
“There’s something else.””
Luca opened his eyes.
“What?””
“When I searched Daniel Reyes’ records, I found another name connected to him.””
“Who?””
“Your father’s former driver.””
Luca frowned.
“My father had several drivers.””
“This one disappeared.””
“When?””
“Two weeks after Daniel Reyes resigned.””
Luca leaned back.
“How many people connected to my father disappeared after that?””
Ethan didn’t answer immediately.
That was answer enough.
“Find them.””
“Some may not be alive.””
“I know.””
“Luca—”
“Find them.””
Ethan nodded.
But before he left, Luca stopped him.
“Ethan.””
He turned.
“Do not tell anyone about the photograph.””
“Not even the security team?””
“Especially not them.””
Ethan understood.
Because if someone inside the estate was helping the person behind this, the fewer people who knew, the safer they were.
After Ethan left, Luca remained alone.
Almost.
Because someone knocked on the door.
“Come in.””
The door opened slowly.
Amelia stepped inside.
Luca looked surprised.
“You shouldn’t be here.””
“I know.””
“How did you get past security?””
She looked confused.
“I used the stairs.””
Luca stared.
“You walked through a restricted hallway using the stairs?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
She shrugged.
“I was looking for my mom.””
Luca almost smiled.
Almost.
Then he noticed her expression.
She wasn’t here because of curiosity.
She looked worried.
“What happened?””
Amelia walked closer.
“Are you angry?””
“At what?””
She looked at the photograph on the desk.
Luca immediately covered it.
“How did you see that?””
“I didn’t.””
“Then why are you asking?””
“Because my dad always said…”
She stopped.
“Your dad said what?””
Amelia looked toward the door.
Then lowered her voice.
“My dad said when people are scared, they get angry.””
Luca looked at her.
“He said that?””
“Yes.””
“Did he say anything else about me?””
Amelia nodded.
“He said you weren’t a bad man.””
Luca looked away.
“That was before.””
“No.””
Her answer was immediate.
“He said after.””
The room went quiet.
Luca turned back.
“After what?””
“After the accident.””
Luca studied her face.
“Your father knew me after the accident?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
She hesitated.
Then she reached into her pocket.
She pulled out a folded piece of paper.
“My mom told me never to give this to anyone.””
Luca looked at the paper.
“Then why are you giving it to me?””
“Because she said I should listen to my dad.””
“And what did he say?””
Amelia looked at him.
“He said if Mr. Costello ever started asking questions…”
She handed him the paper.
“Then it meant he was finally ready.””
Luca unfolded it.
The handwriting was old.
But the message was clear.
*Luca,*
*If you are reading this, then I failed to tell you the truth when I had the chance.*
His fingers tightened.
He continued.
*The accident was planned. Victor Moretti was not protecting your company. He was protecting himself.*
Luca’s heart pounded.
The next line was worse.
*But Victor was not the person who ordered it.*
He stopped.
There was more.
A final sentence.
*The person who wanted you unable to walk was someone you loved.*
Luca stared at the words.
Someone he loved.
His mind immediately went through every person close to him.
Family.
Friends.
Employees.
People who had cried beside his hospital bed.
People who told him they were sorry.
People who told him they would never leave.
Then the paper slipped slightly in his hand.
Because another detail caught his eye.
At the bottom of the note was a date.
The note was written three days after his accident.
But Daniel Reyes had died two years before.
Luca froze.
“Impossible.””
Amelia looked at him.
“What?””
“My father wrote this after he died.””
Her face changed.
“He didn’t die two years ago.””
Luca looked up.
“What did you say?””
Amelia stepped back.
“My mom told everyone he died.””
“Because?””
“Because she was scared.””
The room suddenly felt colder.
“Amelia.””
She looked at the floor.
“My dad is alive.””
Luca stared at her.
The impossible had become a pattern.
“Where is he?””
“I don’t know.””
“Amelia.””
“He told my mom he had to disappear.””
“Why?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because someone was trying to find him.””
Luca looked at the note again.
Daniel Reyes had not died.
He had hidden.
For years.
Waiting.
Watching.
Knowing someone would eventually come looking.
Then every screen in Luca’s study suddenly went black.
The lights shut off.
The security system went silent.
A second later, every monitor flickered back on.
But instead of security footage, one image appeared across every screen.
A photograph.
Not the one from the archive.
A new one.
Taken moments ago.
Luca and Amelia standing in the study.
Someone had photographed them through the window.
Underneath the image was a message.
*You should have stayed in the chair.*
Then another line appeared.
*Now you’re going to lose the only thing your father left behind.*
Luca looked at Amelia.
The little girl was staring at the screen.
And for the first time since he met her…
She looked afraid.
May you like
Because she whispered four words.
“Mom is in danger.””
