Chapter 6: The Friend Who Built the Cage
For twelve years, Luca Costello had imagined the moment he would confront the person responsible for destroying his life.
In his mind, it always happened differently.
He imagined anger.
He imagined revenge.
He imagined standing face-to-face with the person who took away his future and making them feel the same helplessness he had felt.
But now, sitting in his wheelchair inside an abandoned storage building, with Amelia holding her mother’s hand and Victor Moretti standing in the doorway with a weapon, Luca felt something unexpected.
Not rage.
Disappointment.
Because Victor was not a stranger.
He was the man who sat beside Luca’s hospital bed when the doctors gave their final diagnosis.
The man who told him, “You are still Luca Costello. Nothing can take that away.””
The man who helped him rebuild his company.
The man who convinced him he was not alone.
And now he stood there smiling.
“You look surprised,” Victor said.
Luca stared at him.
“I’m trying to understand.””
Victor tilted his head.
“Understand what?””
“When you decided to destroy me.””
The smile disappeared slightly.
“Destroy you?””
Victor stepped into the room.
“You really still think that’s what happened?””
Luca’s eyes narrowed.
“Then explain it.””
Victor looked around.
At the old storage building.
At the people who had become connected to the truth.
“You always loved answers, Luca.””
“No.””
Luca’s voice was calm.
“I loved the truth.””
Victor smiled faintly.
“That was your problem.””
The gun remained pointed downward.
Not aimed.
Not yet.
But the threat was obvious.
“You believed knowing the truth made you stronger.””
Victor walked closer.
“But sometimes the truth only gives people something else to suffer with.””
Amelia moved closer to her mother.
Luca noticed.
Victor noticed too.
His eyes shifted toward the child.
“And this is Daniel’s daughter.””
Luca’s expression hardened.
“Don’t look at her.””
Victor stopped.
For a moment, the old Luca returned.
The man who commanded boardrooms.
The man who made powerful people nervous.
“You have already taken enough from me.””
Victor looked amused.
“Enough?””
He laughed quietly.
“You have no idea what was taken from me.””
Ethan’s voice crackled through Luca’s communication device.
“Luca, I’m approaching the building.””
Victor’s eyes moved immediately.
Too quickly.
Luca noticed.
“You can hear that.””
Victor looked down at the device.
Then smiled.
“You never did trust technology enough.””
Luca felt a cold realization.
The communication system had been compromised.
Victor had been inside his security network.
Maybe for years.
“How long?”” Luca asked.
Victor looked confused.
“How long what?””
“Have you been watching me?””
The smile faded.
“Since the night you crashed.””
The answer was quiet.
Honest.
And somehow worse.
Luca stared at him.
“Why?””
Victor walked toward an old table.
He placed the gun down.
Almost casually.
“I didn’t want you dead.””
Luca almost laughed.
“You expected me to believe that?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because it’s true.””
Victor looked at him.
“Dead people become heroes.””
Silence.
“But broken people become forgotten.””
The words hit harder than Luca expected.
Victor continued.
“I needed you alive.””
“Why?””
“Because you were the only person who could stop everything from collapsing.””
Luca’s eyes narrowed.
“You’re the one who caused it.””
“No.””
Victor shook his head.
“I was trying to control it.””
“That’s your excuse?””
“No.””
Victor looked toward the photograph in Luca’s hand.
“My mistake was believing I could control people who were much smarter than me.””
For the first time, Luca saw something different in Victor.
Not confidence.
Not arrogance.
Fear.
Real fear.
“Who?”” Luca asked.
Victor said nothing.
“Who were you protecting?””
The silence answered.
And Luca understood.
Victor was not the person at the top.
He was another piece.
A powerful piece.
But still a piece.
Mrs. Reyes stepped forward.
“You lied to him.””
Victor looked at her.
“You should have stayed quiet.””
Her face hardened.
“You killed my husband.””
Victor’s expression changed.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“No.””
His voice became sharper.
“I tried to save him.””
Everyone went still.
Luca looked at him.
“What?””
Victor looked at Mrs. Reyes.
“Daniel found something he shouldn’t have found.””
“Because you were stealing from Luca’s father.””
Victor’s jaw tightened.
“I was not the thief.””
“Then what were you?””
Victor looked at Luca.
“A shield.””
The word sounded almost ridiculous.
But he said it like he believed it.
“Your father built an empire, Luca. But empires create enemies. Some outside. Some inside.””
“My father was a good man.””
Victor looked away.
“Your father was complicated.””
Luca hated that answer.
Because it sounded like the truth.
“Daniel found evidence of someone close to your family moving money.””
“Who?””
Victor remained silent.
“Who?””
Victor looked at him.
“Your mother.””
The room froze.
Again.
The same impossible answer.
Luca’s fingers tightened around the wheelchair controls.
“No.””
Victor nodded slowly.
“I knew you wouldn’t believe me.””
“My mother died before this happened.””
“Yes.””
“Then how?””
Victor looked at the photograph.
“Because your mother knew what was happening before she died.””
Luca stared.
“What are you saying?””
“I’m saying your mother spent her final months trying to expose the person who was destroying your family.””
“Who?””
Victor looked toward the ceiling.
Like even saying the name was dangerous.
“I never found out.””
“You expect me to believe that?””
“I expect you to believe what I know.””
Victor stepped closer.
“Your mother left behind evidence.””
Luca remembered the photograph.
The note.
The hidden records.
“She was involved.””
“She was investigating.””
“That’s not what you said.””
“Because the truth is not simple.””
Victor’s voice lowered.
“Your mother discovered someone inside the family had been using Costello money to fund illegal operations.””
Luca looked at him.
“And my accident?””
Victor’s face changed.
“That was not supposed to happen.””
The words struck him.
Not supposed to happen.
“What does that mean?””
Victor looked away.
“The plan was to remove you from control.””
“By killing me?””
“No.””
Victor swallowed.
“By making you believe you were powerless.””
The sound of footsteps echoed outside.
Victor immediately turned.
His expression changed.
“We have to leave.””
Luca stared.
“You’re not taking us anywhere.””
Victor looked at him.
“If I wanted you dead, you would already be dead.””
“That’s supposed to comfort me?””
“No.””
Victor looked serious.
“It’s supposed to make you understand that someone else wants you dead.””
A shadow moved outside the broken windows.
Not security.
Someone else.
Victor saw it too.
And for the first time, he looked afraid.
“Get Amelia out.””
Mrs. Reyes froze.
“What?””
Victor looked at her.
“You heard me.””
“You expect me to trust you?””
“No.””
Victor looked at Luca.
“I expect him to.””
Luca hated that he hesitated.
Because a part of him still remembered the old Victor.
The friend.
The brother.
The person who held his hand when no one knew what to say.
Then a loud crash came from outside.
Someone had entered the building.
Victor picked up the gun.
Not pointing it at Luca.
Pointing it toward the door.
“Stay behind me.””
Luca stared.
“Why?””
Victor looked back.
And for the first time in twelve years, Luca saw genuine regret in his eyes.
“Because I failed you once.””
A gunshot exploded outside.
Everyone dropped.
The window shattered.
Victor moved instantly, pulling Mrs. Reyes and Amelia away from the glass.
Luca watched him.
The man who betrayed him.
The man who protected him.
The man he no longer understood.
More shots followed.
Then the lights went out again.
In the darkness, Luca heard Victor whisper:
“They found us.””
A hand grabbed the side of Luca’s wheelchair.
He froze.
Not Victor.
Someone else.
A stranger’s voice whispered beside his ear.
“Your father was right about one thing.””
Luca couldn’t move.
The stranger leaned closer.
“Your family was never the empire.””
A pause.
“You were the secret.””
Then the person disappeared into the darkness.
When the lights returned, Victor was gone.
The attacker was gone.
But on the floor beside Luca was a small envelope.
His name was written on it.
Not printed.
Handwritten.
In a style he recognized immediately.
His mother’s handwriting.
Luca opened it with shaking hands.
Inside was a single page.
Only one sentence.
*Luca, if you are reading this, then I failed to protect you from your own blood.*
And beneath it was the name of the person his mother had been investigating.
May you like
The name that made Luca’s entire world collapse.
*Costello.*
