Chapter 9: The Man Who Knew the Beginning
The warehouse stood near the river, hidden between abandoned factories and empty streets.
No lights.
No signs.
No security cameras.
Exactly the kind of place someone would choose if they wanted a conversation that never happened.
Arthur Reynolds parked several blocks away.
He came alone.
Not because he trusted Marcus.
Because he understood him.
Marcus Vale had spent twenty years studying people.
He knew Arthur would ignore warnings.
He knew Arthur would follow the truth even when it hurt.
That was one of the reasons they became partners.
And one of the reasons they became enemies.
Arthur walked toward the warehouse entrance.
The large metal door was already open.
That bothered him.
A person who wanted secrecy did not leave doors open.
Unless they wanted to be found.
Inside, the warehouse was almost empty.
A single light hung from the ceiling.
Underneath it stood Marcus Vale.
Older than Arthur remembered.
His hair had turned gray.
His face carried years of exhaustion.
But his eyes were the same.
Sharp.
Focused.
Always calculating.
“Arthur.””
Arthur stopped several feet away.
“Marcus.””
For a moment, neither man spoke.
Two people who had once built an empire together now stood surrounded by concrete walls and old memories.
Marcus looked at him.
“You came.””
“You knew I would.””
“Yes.””
Arthur’s expression hardened.
“You always thought you understood me better than anyone.””
Marcus looked down.
“Because I did.””
“That’s not something to be proud of.””
“No.””
Marcus sighed.
“It’s something I regret.””
Arthur almost laughed.
“Regret?””
“Yes.””
“After everything?””
Marcus looked at him.
“You still think I’m the villain.””
Arthur stepped closer.
“You tried to take control of my company.””
“No.””
“You hid ownership structures.””
“No.””
“You worked with people inside Meridian.””
“No.””
Arthur’s patience disappeared.
“Then explain what happened.””
Marcus was silent.
Then he reached into his jacket and pulled out a folder.
He placed it on a table.
“The truth.””
Arthur did not move.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“No.””
Marcus looked at him.
“I expect you to verify it.””
That answer sounded exactly like something Arthur would say.
Slowly, Arthur walked to the table.
He opened the folder.
Inside were documents.
Not copies.
Originals.
Bank records.
Contracts.
Ownership transfers.
The same type of information he had been searching for.
But there was something different.
Dates.
Very old dates.
Arthur looked up.
“These are from before Reynolds Global.””
“Yes.””
“Before Marcus Vale Holdings.””
“Yes.””
“Before Meridian.””
Marcus nodded.
Arthur looked back down.
“Why?””
Marcus’s voice became quiet.
“Because everything started before we knew it did.””
Arthur continued reading.
The documents showed something impossible.
Thomas Reynolds and Daniel Vale — Marcus’s father — had not been competitors.
They had been partners.
For decades.
“They worked together.””
“Yes.””
Arthur looked at Marcus.
“My father told me never to trust your family.””
Marcus smiled sadly.
“My father told me the same about yours.””
Silence.
Arthur looked at the documents again.
“What happened?””
Marcus walked closer.
“The same thing that always happens when people build something powerful.””
“What?””
“They stop fighting outsiders.””
Marcus pointed at the papers.
“And start fighting each other.””
Arthur continued reading.
The records revealed that Thomas Reynolds and Daniel Vale created a private investment network.
Not to steal money.
Not to hide crimes.
To protect strategic assets from hostile corporations.
They built a structure that allowed them to control companies without exposing their identities.
Including Meridian.
Arthur looked at Marcus.
“So why did everyone think my father betrayed yours?””
“Because someone made sure they did.””
“Who?””
Marcus didn’t answer immediately.
Arthur noticed.
“You know.””
“Yes.””
“Tell me.””
Marcus looked away.
“Their accountant.””
Arthur frowned.
“An accountant?””
“Not just any accountant.””
Marcus opened another document.
Arthur read the name.
His expression changed.
“No.””
Marcus nodded.
“Yes.””
Arthur stared.
Because the name belonged to someone he knew.
Someone who had been part of his life.
Someone whose advice he trusted.
*Richard Hale.*
Arthur’s father’s longtime financial advisor.
The man who had helped manage the family’s wealth.
The man who attended every major family event.
The man Arthur considered almost family.
“He manipulated both sides.””
Marcus nodded.
“He created fake records showing your father was stealing from mine.””
“Why?””
“Control.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Richard didn’t want the companies destroyed.””
Arthur understood.
“He wanted them weakened.””
“Yes.””
“So he could take them.””
“Yes.””
Arthur felt anger rising.
All these years.
All these assumptions.
All this hatred.
Built on a lie.
“What about you?””
Marcus looked at him.
“What about me?””
“You knew.””
“Yes.””
“You knew Richard was responsible.””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
Marcus looked down.
“Because I found out too late.””
Arthur waited.
Marcus continued.
“By the time I understood what happened, Richard had already built influence inside both companies.””
“Inside mine?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
Marcus looked at him.
“Through people.””
Arthur’s face changed.
“Who?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
Arthur’s phone vibrated.
He looked down.
A message.
From Andrew.
*Arthur, don’t trust Marcus. He’s manipulating you.*
Arthur stared at the screen.
Marcus noticed.
“Your brother?””
Arthur looked up.
“Yes.””
Marcus nodded slowly.
“That’s what I expected.””
Arthur frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Marcus walked toward him.
“Andrew is not the person you think he is.””
Arthur’s expression hardened.
“Careful.””
“I’m not attacking your brother.””
“Then what?””
“I’m warning you.””
Arthur held up the phone.
“He says you’re manipulating me.””
Marcus laughed quietly.
“Of course he does.””
“Why?””
“Because Andrew knows the truth.””
“What truth?””
Marcus looked directly at him.
“Your father didn’t create Reynolds Global.””
Arthur froze.
“What?””
“He inherited it.””
Arthur stared.
“That’s impossible.””
“No.””
Marcus shook his head.
“Your father was chosen.””
“Chosen by who?””
Marcus pointed at the documents.
“By the people who built the original network.””
Arthur looked confused.
“Who are they?””
Marcus’s face became serious.
“A group of investors who believed companies like Meridian should not belong to corporations.””
“Then who should they belong to?””
Marcus answered:
“Employees. Communities. The people who depend on them.””
Arthur said nothing.
It sounded impossible.
But the documents were real.
Marcus continued.
“Your father tried to protect that vision.””
“And Richard?””
“Richard wanted ownership.””
Arthur looked at the papers.
“And Marcus Vale Strategic Partners?””
Marcus looked away.
“I created it to expose him.””
Arthur stared.
“You built an entire company to fight Richard?””
“Yes.””
“Then why hide?””
“Because Richard had already learned how I operated.””
Marcus paused.
“He knew my moves before I made them.””
Arthur remembered.
The surveillance.
The leaked documents.
The flight.
“He had someone close.””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Marcus looked at him.
“I don’t know.””
Arthur stepped closer.
“But you suspect.””
Marcus nodded.
“I do.””
“Who?””
Marcus hesitated.
Then he said:
“The person who convinced you to trust him.””
Arthur felt his heart sink.
Because there was only one person who fit that description.
Someone who had been there from the beginning.
Someone who knew everything.
Someone who had introduced Arthur to Marcus.
Richard Hale.
But Marcus shook his head.
“Not Richard.””
Arthur stopped.
“Then who?””
Marcus looked at him.
“The person who protected Richard.””
A cold silence followed.
Arthur understood.
There was someone above Richard.
Someone controlling him.
Someone invisible.
“Who?””
Marcus looked toward the warehouse entrance.
Before he answered, the lights suddenly went out.
Darkness filled the room.
Arthur heard footsteps.
Not one person.
Several.
Marcus immediately moved.
“Get down.””
A sharp sound echoed.
Glass shattered.
Arthur dropped behind the table.
Claire’s warnings.
Ethan’s doubts.
The hidden ownership.
Everything disappeared.
Only survival remained.
Then a voice came from the darkness.
A voice Arthur recognized.
A voice he never expected.
“Arthur.””
He froze.
Because the person standing in the doorway was not Richard.
Not Marcus.
Not Andrew.
It was Ethan Cole.
And behind him were armed security officers.
Ethan looked at Arthur with a painful expression.
“I’m sorry.””
Arthur stared.
“Why?””
Ethan looked away.
“Because you were right.””
A pause.
“Everyone you trusted was connected.””
Arthur’s eyes narrowed.
“Then tell me who is behind it.””
Ethan stepped forward.
And the answer he gave changed everything.
“The person who started this…”
He looked directly at Arthur.
“…is the only person you never thought to question.””
Arthur felt the room go silent.
“Who?””
Ethan swallowed.
May you like
Then said:
“Your mother.””
