Chapter 7: The Secret Ownership
Arthur Reynolds had spent his entire career understanding power.
Power was not always money.
Money was only the tool.
Real power came from information.
Who knew what.
Who controlled what.
Who could make one decision that changed everything.
And now Arthur was beginning to understand something terrifying.
Someone had been collecting information about him for years.
Not months.
Years.
The message on his phone remained on the screen.
*Now I know she’s alive.*
Arthur stared at those words as he and Claire moved quickly through the crowded streets outside the coffee shop.
“Keep walking,” Arthur said.
Claire looked behind them.
“Are we being followed?””
“I don’t know.””
“That’s not reassuring.””
“It’s honest.””
They turned onto a quieter street.
Arthur stopped near a building entrance and looked back.
The black SUV was gone.
But he knew better than to feel safe.
People who wanted to remain hidden did not need to follow you forever.
They only needed to know where you were going.
Claire lowered her voice.
“Arthur, I need to tell you something.””
He looked at her.
“What?””
“The message wasn’t the first one.””
His expression changed.
“What do you mean?””
“Someone has been contacting me for weeks.””
Arthur went silent.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I didn’t know who they were.””
“That’s not a reason.””
“It is when they know things nobody should know.””
Claire pulled out her phone.
She opened a hidden folder.
Inside were dozens of screenshots.
Anonymous messages.
Threats.
Warnings.
Photos.
Arthur scrolled through them.
One photo showed him leaving his office.
Another showed his private meeting schedule.
Another showed Claire entering her apartment building.
“How long?””
“Six weeks.””
Arthur looked up.
“Six weeks?””
“Yes.””
“And you said nothing?””
Claire looked hurt.
“I was trying to find out who was behind it before I brought you into it.””
Arthur stared at her.
“Claire, I was already in it.””
She looked away.
“I know.””
For a moment, neither spoke.
The anger disappeared.
Only exhaustion remained.
Arthur had spent the entire day discovering that the people closest to him might be connected to something much larger.
And Claire had been carrying that fear alone.
“Did you tell anyone?””
“No.””
“Not legal?””
“No.””
“Not security?””
“No.””
“Why?””
Claire looked at him.
“Because the first message I received said something.””
Arthur waited.
“What?””
She swallowed.
“It said, ‘Your security team already belongs to us.’”
Arthur felt his stomach tighten.
That changed everything.
A company could survive a stolen file.
It could survive a financial attack.
But if the people protecting you were compromised, you had no protection.
Arthur looked at the city around them.
Every stranger became a question.
Every vehicle became a possibility.
“Where did Marcus get his information?””
Claire shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
“You met him?””
“No.””
“You spoke to him?””
“No.””
“Then how do you know he’s involved?””
Claire hesitated.
Arthur noticed.
“What?””
“There’s something I didn’t tell you.””
His expression hardened.
“Claire.””
“I found a file.””
“What file?””
“A private investigation report.””
“About Marcus?””
“No.””
She looked directly at him.
“About you.””
Arthur froze.
“Who ordered it?””
Claire looked down.
“I don’t know.””
“That’s impossible.””
“I found it buried inside Meridian’s network.””
Arthur stared.
“Meridian investigated me?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“That’s what I’m trying to figure out.””
Arthur looked toward the road.
The pieces were becoming more complicated.
Someone inside Meridian had investigated him.
Someone inside his own company was helping Marcus.
Someone had planted surveillance equipment.
And someone wanted him away from London.
But why?
What did they know that he didn’t?
An hour later, Arthur and Claire arrived at a private office owned by one of Reynolds Global Holdings’ subsidiaries.
The building was small.
Quiet.
Away from the company headquarters.
A place almost nobody knew about.
Inside, Arthur immediately accessed the secure systems.
Claire watched him.
“What are you looking for?””
“The ownership structure of Meridian Airlines.””
“But you already know the shareholders.””
“The public shareholders.””
Arthur typed.
“I want the hidden ones.””
After several minutes, encrypted records appeared.
Claire stepped closer.
Arthur scanned the information.
Then stopped.
“No.””
“What?””
He zoomed in.
There was a series of holding companies.
Layer after layer.
Each one hiding behind another.
Arthur followed the chain.
And then he found it.
A company registered in another country.
A company with no employees.
No public records.
No obvious operations.
But one connection.
Ownership.
Claire whispered:
“Who is it?””
Arthur didn’t answer.
Because he was looking at the name.
A name that made no sense.
The hidden controlling shareholder of Meridian Airlines was:
*Vale Strategic Partners.*
Marcus Vale’s company.
Claire looked shocked.
“He owns Meridian?””
“Not officially.””
“What does that mean?””
“It means someone created enough distance to hide his control.””
Arthur kept reading.
Then another detail appeared.
A second ownership line.
He followed it.
And his expression changed.
“What?””
Claire looked at him.
Arthur turned the screen toward her.
“Marcus isn’t the only owner.””
She looked at the document.
Another company.
Another hidden structure.
Another name.
Claire’s face went pale.
“No.””
Arthur stared.
“Do you know them?””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Claire slowly stepped back.
“Andrew Reynolds.””
Arthur felt like the room had stopped moving.
His brother.
The person he had spent years defending.
The person who had told him not to let money change him.
The person secretly connected to Marcus.
“No.””
Claire’s voice softened.
“Arthur.””
“No.””
He stood.
“There has to be another explanation.””
“There isn’t.””
“You don’t understand my family.””
Claire looked at him.
“I understand evidence.””
That sentence hurt because it sounded like something Arthur himself would say.
He turned away.
For the first time that day, he wasn’t thinking like an investor.
He was thinking like a brother.
And that made everything harder.
His phone rang.
Arthur looked at the screen.
Andrew.
He almost didn’t answer.
Almost.
Then he did.
“Andrew.””
His brother’s voice came immediately.
“Arthur.””
The tone was strange.
Not angry.
Not defensive.
Afraid.
“Where are you?””
Arthur said nothing.
“Arthur, listen to me.””
“Why?””
A pause.
“Because you’re in danger.””
Arthur laughed quietly.
“That’s interesting coming from you.””
Silence.
Then Andrew said:
“You found the ownership records.””
Arthur froze.
Claire looked at him.
“How did you know?””
Andrew didn’t answer.
Arthur’s voice became cold.
“You knew.””
“Arthur—”
“You knew.””
“I was trying to protect you.””
Arthur closed his eyes.
Everyone said that.
Everyone claimed protection.
Everyone caused damage.
“From what?””
Andrew went silent.
“Tell me.””
Finally, his brother spoke.
“From Marcus.””
Arthur looked at Claire.
“But Marcus is working with you.””
“No.””
The answer came immediately.
“I was working against him.””
Arthur frowned.
“What?””
“Marcus forced his way into Meridian because he wanted control.””
“Then why is your name attached to the ownership?””
“Because I was trying to stop him.””
Arthur said nothing.
Andrew continued.
“Three years ago, after Marcus left Reynolds Global, he started building influence in the aviation industry.””
“Why?””
“Because he knew Meridian was vulnerable.””
“And you bought shares?””
“Yes.””
“To stop him?””
“Yes.””
Arthur shook his head.
“That makes no sense.””
“I didn’t tell you because you would have stopped me.””
“Maybe because I wouldn’t trust you with my company.””
A painful silence followed.
Then Andrew said:
“You should have been asking why Marcus disappeared.””
Arthur stopped.
“What?””
“He didn’t leave because of the investigation.””
Arthur listened.
“He left because he found something inside Reynolds Global.””
“What?””
Andrew’s voice lowered.
“Someone had been moving money before Marcus ever touched anything.””
Arthur felt cold.
“Who?””
Andrew didn’t answer.
“Andrew.””
His brother whispered:
“Arthur, the person who started this whole thing…”
A pause.
“The person who began stealing from your company…”
Another pause.
“Was your father.””
Arthur went completely still.
The call ended.
For several seconds, he could not move.
Claire stared at him.
“What did he say?””
Arthur looked at the phone.
His father had been dead for twelve years.
The man who built the foundation of his life.
The man whose lessons shaped him.
The man he had spent years trying to honor.
And now someone was saying he had been the beginning of everything.
Then Arthur’s computer screen changed.
A new file appeared.
No notification.
No login request.
Just a document opening by itself.
The title was simple.
*REYNOLDS FAMILY INVESTIGATION — ORIGINAL REPORT*
Arthur stared at it.
Because beneath the title was the author.
The person who created the report.
A name he had never expected to see.
*Marcus Vale.*

And the final line of the document read:
*Arthur Reynolds was never the owner of the empire. He was only the person chosen to protect it.*
