Chapter 3: The Deal That Was Never Safe
Arthur Reynolds had spent twenty years learning one rule.
When someone tried to stop a business deal from happening, the reason was almost never simple.
People did not risk careers, reputations, and billions of dollars without a motive.
The conference room on the second floor of the Meridian Airlines terminal was empty except for Arthur and Victoria Bennett.
The blinds were closed.
The lights were dim.
Outside, passengers continued moving through the airport, unaware that one of the largest aviation deals in history was beginning to collapse behind a locked door.
Victoria placed a folder on the table.
Arthur looked at it.
“What is that?””
“Everything I know.””
He opened it.
Inside were printed emails, internal reports, and security documents.
Arthur flipped through the pages.
The first thing he noticed was not what was there.
It was what was missing.
“Where are the original files?””
Victoria looked at him.
“What do you mean?””
“These are copies.””
“Yes.””
“Who removed the originals?””
She hesitated.
Arthur closed the folder.
“That hesitation is becoming a pattern.””
Victoria sat across from him.
“You’re very observant.””
“I built my company by noticing what people avoid saying.””
A long silence followed.
Then Victoria spoke.
“Three weeks ago, Meridian’s internal audit department discovered irregularities.””
“What kind?””
“Financial transfers.””
Arthur’s expression remained unchanged.
“How much?””
Victoria looked down.
“Not small amounts.””
“That’s not a number.””
“Nearly four hundred million dollars.””
The room felt colder.
Arthur leaned back.
“And where was the money going?””
Victoria opened another document.
“Several offshore accounts.””
“Owned by?””
“That’s the problem.””
“What problem?””
“They were hidden behind multiple corporate layers.””
Arthur scanned the report.
“This has nothing to do with me.””
Victoria looked at him.
“That’s what everyone thought.””
Arthur stopped reading.
“Explain.””
She took a breath.
“The investment from Reynolds Global Holdings would have triggered a full financial review.””
Arthur understood immediately.
His investment was not just money.
It was access.
With a five-billion-dollar partnership, his company would gain board-level oversight, audit rights, and operational transparency.
Someone inside Meridian did not just fear losing an investment.
They feared being exposed.
Arthur looked at the documents again.
“Ethan Cole knew about this?””
Victoria didn’t answer.
That was answer enough.
“How long?””
“I don’t know.””
Arthur looked up.
“You’re telling me the CEO of a global airline may have known about hundreds of millions of dollars disappearing, and you don’t know?””
Victoria’s face tightened.
“I said I don’t know when he learned about it.””
“Not that he didn’t know.””
She remained silent.
Arthur stood and walked toward the window.
The airport stretched below them.
Planes taking off.
People arriving.
Thousands of ordinary moments happening while a corporate war unfolded quietly above.
“Why remove me from the flight?””
Victoria looked away.
“I don’t know.””
Arthur turned.
“Victoria.””
She closed her eyes briefly.
Then she admitted:
“I think they were trying to delay you.””
“Delay me from what?””
“From reaching London.””
“Why?””
“Because the board meeting was scheduled for tomorrow morning.””
Arthur nodded.
The pieces were connecting.
The investment agreement.
The leaked documents.
The flight.
The CEO’s involvement.
Someone needed time.
Time to hide something.
Time to destroy something.
Time to control the story.
Arthur picked up his phone.
He called Claire.
She answered immediately.
“Arthur, I have information.””
“Go ahead.””
“The leaked documents are real.””
Arthur looked at Victoria.
“Who confirmed?””
“Our legal team reviewed the files. They match the versions sent to Meridian executives.””
“Anything else?””
A pause.
“Yes.””
Arthur waited.
“Someone accessed your private transaction folder last night.””
His expression changed slightly.
“My folder?””
“Yes.””
“From where?””
Claire lowered her voice.
“Meridian’s internal network.””
The room became silent.
Arthur looked at Victoria.
She noticed his expression.
“What is it?””
Arthur covered the phone.
“Someone inside Meridian accessed my confidential files.””
Victoria’s face went pale.
“That’s impossible.””
“No.””
Arthur looked at her.
“It’s possible. It happened.””
He returned to the call.
“Claire, lock everything.””
“Already done.””
“Contact the legal team. No communication with Meridian until I approve it.””
“Understood.””
“And Claire?””
“Yes?””
“Find out who requested my removal from Flight 418.””
“I’m already working on it.””
Arthur ended the call.
Victoria stared at him.
“You think the flight incident and the leak are connected.””
“I don’t think.””
Arthur placed his phone on the table.
“I know.””
She looked confused.
“How?””
“Because whoever wanted to steal information could have done it quietly.””
He pointed toward the airport.
“But instead, someone made a public scene.””
Victoria understood.
“They wanted you distracted.””
“Exactly.””
A knock interrupted them.
Neither moved.
The door opened slowly.
A man in a dark suit entered.
Arthur recognized him immediately.
Ethan Cole.
The CEO of Meridian Airlines.
The man whose company was asking for five billion dollars.
The man who had ordered Arthur removed from his own flight.
Ethan looked older than Arthur remembered.
His usually confident expression was gone.
“Arthur.””
Arthur did not stand.
“Ethan.””
Victoria immediately stepped away.
“I’ll leave you two alone.””
“No,” Arthur said.
Victoria stopped.
Arthur looked at Ethan.
“She stays.””
Ethan’s eyes narrowed.
“This is a private conversation.””
Arthur leaned back.
“After publicly removing me from your aircraft, I think privacy is no longer your priority.””
The CEO’s face tightened.
“I made a difficult decision.””
“You made a suspicious one.””
Ethan looked at Victoria.
“Did she show you the documents?””
Arthur answered.
“She did.””
“And now you believe I’m responsible.””
Arthur studied him.
“I believe you know more than you’re telling me.””
Ethan walked closer.
“You have no idea what’s happening.””
“Then explain.””
The CEO looked toward the closed door.
“This is bigger than the investment.””
Arthur said nothing.
Ethan continued.
“There are people inside this company who are willing to destroy Meridian to protect themselves.””
Arthur’s eyes narrowed.
“And you think removing me from a flight was the solution?””
“I think keeping you away from London for a few hours was necessary.””
“Necessary?””
“Yes.””
Arthur stood.
“You embarrassed me in front of hundreds of passengers.””
“I protected you.””
That answer surprised Arthur.
For the first time, Ethan sounded genuine.
Arthur stared at him.
“Protected me from what?””
Ethan looked toward the window.
When he spoke again, his voice was quieter.
“From signing the deal.””
Arthur frowned.
“What?””
Ethan turned back.
“If you had reached London today, you would have signed the agreement tomorrow morning.””
“Yes.””
“You would have transferred the first billion dollars within forty-eight hours.””
“Yes.””
“And then?””
Arthur waited.
Ethan’s expression darkened.
“Then someone would have used your money to cover up a crime.””
The room fell silent.
Arthur looked at Victoria.
She looked just as shocked.
Because apparently, even she had not heard that.
Arthur stepped closer.
“Ethan.””
The CEO looked at him.
“Tell me exactly what is happening.””
Ethan opened his mouth.
Then his phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His entire expression changed.
“What?””
A few seconds passed.
Then his face went completely pale.
Arthur noticed.
“What happened?””
Ethan slowly lowered the phone.
“No.””
“What happened?””
The CEO looked directly at Arthur.
“The person who leaked the documents just sent a message.””
Arthur waited.
“What did they say?””
Ethan swallowed.
“They know you’re here.””
Victoria froze.
Arthur felt a chill run through him.
“Who?””
Ethan looked at the message again.
Then he handed the phone over.
On the screen was a single sentence.
*You should have let him get on the plane.*
Arthur stared at the words.
Because the message was not a threat.
It was something worse.
A warning.
And beneath it was a name.
A name Arthur recognized immediately.
Someone who had no reason to be involved.
May you like
Someone who should have been on his side.
*Claire Mitchell.*
