Chapter 8: The Daughter Beneath the Floor

The ground disappeared beneath Adrian’s feet.

For one terrifying second, there was no sound except the cracking of old wood and the scream of metal bending under pressure.

Then the floor collapsed.

“Adrian!””

Emma’s voice was the last thing he heard before darkness swallowed him.

He hit the ground hard.

Dust filled his lungs.

A wave of pain shot through his shoulder.

Above him, pieces of the old chapel ceiling crashed down.

“Emma!””

No answer.

“Daniel!””

Nothing.

Adrian forced his eyes open.

The room above was gone.

He was lying in a hidden chamber beneath the mill.

A forgotten basement.

The air smelled like rust and burned wood.

Then he heard something.

A child crying.

Not far away.

“Hello?””

The crying stopped.

Adrian pushed himself up.

“Who’s there?””

A small voice answered.

“Is someone there?””

His heart stopped.

He knew that voice.

Not Lily.

Not Clara.

Someone else.

“Rose?””

Silence.

Then:

“Who are you?””

Adrian moved toward the sound.

A metal door stood at the end of the chamber.

Locked.

Behind it was a little girl.

“I’m Adrian.””

The child went quiet.

Then she whispered:

“Adrian Vale?””

He grabbed the handle.

“Yes.””

The girl began crying.

“I thought nobody was coming.””

His hands tightened.

“I'm going to get you out.””

“There’s a key.””

“Where?””

“On the table.””

Adrian looked around.

A small wooden table sat beneath a broken light.

On it was a brass key.

The same shape.

The same size.

As the one Emma had given him.

But this one had a different marking.

A rose.

He unlocked the door.

The girl stepped out slowly.

She was smaller than he expected.

Thin.

Pale.

Her brown hair fell over her face.

But her eyes—

Those eyes were impossible to mistake.

His eyes.

“Rose.””

The girl stared at him.

“You know my name?””

Adrian couldn't answer.

He just knelt.

She looked frightened.

“I’m sorry.””

“For what?””

“I tried to leave.””

Adrian frowned.

“Leave where?””

“The room.””

She pointed behind her.

“They said I wasn't ready.””

“Who?””

The girl looked toward the darkness.

“Grandfather.””

Adrian’s blood ran cold.

“Victor?””

Rose nodded.

“He said you would come eventually.””

Adrian looked around.

“Where is he?””

“Not here.””

“Then who was watching you?””

Rose hesitated.

“The other girls.””

“What other girls?””

She looked at him.

“There were many.””

Adrian felt sick.

His father.

The replacements.

The hidden rooms.

The children.

“How long have you been here?””

Rose looked down.

“I don't know.””

A noise echoed above them.

Adrian immediately pulled her behind him.

“Stay close.””

“What’s happening?””

“Someone is looking for us.””

A flashlight appeared at the far end of the corridor.

Adrian prepared himself.

Then a voice called out.

“Adrian?””

He froze.

“Daniel?””

The light moved closer.

Daniel appeared.

His face was bruised.

His suit torn.

But alive.

Adrian exhaled.

“Where is Lily?””

Daniel stopped.

His expression changed.

“I was going to ask you the same thing.””

Adrian’s stomach dropped.

“What?””

Daniel stepped closer.

“After you left, the hotel was attacked.””

“By who?””

“I don't know.””

“Where is Lily?””

Daniel looked away.

“I lost them.””

Adrian felt anger rise.

“You lost my daughter?””

“I was trying to protect them.””

“Try harder.””

The words came out harsher than he intended.

Daniel accepted them.

“I know.””

Rose stepped out.

Daniel froze.

“Oh my God.””

Adrian looked at him.

“Is this her?””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Emma was right.””

“About what?””

Daniel looked at Rose.

“She was never dead.””

A sound came from Adrian’s phone.

A message.

Unknown number.

A video.

Adrian opened it.

His blood turned cold.

Lily was sitting in a room.

Anna beside her.

And standing behind them—

Clara.

The fake Rose.

But there was someone else.

A woman.

Adrian recognized her instantly.

Vivienne.

He stared.

“No.””

Daniel looked over.

“What?””

Adrian showed him.

Daniel’s face hardened.

“She took them.””

The video began.

Vivienne looked directly into the camera.

Her face was exhausted.

Not angry.

Not cruel.

Afraid.

“Adrian, listen to me.””

He held his breath.

“I know what this looks like.””

Lily cried beside her.

“Daddy will come.””

Vivienne closed her eyes.

Then continued.

“I didn't take them.””

Adrian frowned.

“What?””

“The person controlling this is someone else.””

A man’s voice interrupted from behind the camera.

“Enough.””

Vivienne looked terrified.

The video ended.

Daniel stared.

“She’s not the kidnapper.””

Adrian looked at him.

“You defended her quickly.””

“Because I know fear when I see it.””

Before Adrian could answer, another sound echoed.

Footsteps.

Multiple.

Coming closer.

Daniel grabbed his weapon.

“We need to move.””

Rose grabbed Adrian’s hand.

“There’s another way out.””

“How do you know?””

She looked down.

“Because I built a map.””

Adrian stared.

“You built a map?””

Rose nodded.

“Grandfather liked puzzles.””

She pulled a folded piece of paper from her pocket.

Adrian opened it.

It was a hand-drawn map of the mill.

Hundreds of lines.

Rooms.

Tunnels.

Secret entrances.

At the center was a circle.

A room marked:

*THE ORIGINAL FAMILY ROOM*

Daniel stared.

“Your father built an underground headquarters?””

Rose nodded.

“He said every family needs a place where nobody can hear them.””

Adrian looked at the map.

“Where is Lily?””

Rose pointed.

A location beneath the eastern wing.

“Here.””

Daniel frowned.

“That area collapsed years ago.””

Rose shook her head.

“No.””

She pointed again.

“The floor is fake.””

Adrian looked at her.

“How do you know?””

“Because I watched them take children there.””

The words hit harder than any weapon.

“How many?””

Rose looked away.

“I don't know.””

Daniel clenched his jaw.

“We need to get them out.””

Adrian folded the map.

“Yes.””

They moved through the tunnels.

Every wall seemed to hold another secret.

Old photographs.

Files.

Names.

Children.

Adrian stopped at one wall.

Hundreds of names were written there.

Children.

Dates.

Locations.

His father's handwriting.

Daniel stared.

“This is a record.””

Adrian touched one name.

Then another.

“They weren't replacements.””

“What?””

“They were witnesses.””

Daniel looked at him.

Adrian understood.

Victor hadn't created these children to replace people.

He had collected them.

Children who knew too much.

Children who could expose him.

A movement came from the darkness.

Adrian turned.

A woman stood there.

Older.

Weak.

Holding a flashlight.

Emma.

His heart jumped.

“Emma?””

She rushed forward.

“Where is Rose?””

Adrian pulled the child close.

“She's here.””

Emma broke down.

She hugged her daughter.

Rose held on tightly.

For the first time all night, Adrian saw Emma smile.

Then she looked at him.

“We have to leave.””

“Where is Lily?””

Emma’s face changed.

Adrian knew before she spoke.

“What?””

“She isn't at the hotel.””

“Then where?””

Emma looked toward the deepest part of the tunnel.

“Victor took her.””

Adrian felt the world go silent.

“But why?””

Emma looked at Rose.

Then at him.

“Because Lily has something Rose doesn't.””

“What?””

Emma whispered:

“Your mother's final message.””

Adrian froze.

“My mother?””

Emma nodded.

“Before she disappeared, she hid a recording inside Lily’s birth bracelet.””

Adrian looked at his hands.

“The bracelet.””

“The one Lily wears.””

His chest tightened.

“So Victor wants it.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Emma’s eyes filled with fear.

“Because it proves he killed your mother.””

A distant sound echoed.

A door opening.

Then a man's voice came through the tunnel speakers.

Victor.

“Adrian.””

Everyone froze.

“You have spent your entire life looking for answers.””

The lights turned on one by one.

Revealing the corridor ahead.

At the end stood a glass room.

Inside was Lily.

Alive.

Crying.

And beside her stood Victor Vale.

The man Adrian had buried.

The man who had destroyed his family.

Victor smiled.

“Come get your daughter.””

Adrian stepped forward.

Emma grabbed his arm.

“Wait.””

Victor lifted something in his hand.

A small silver bracelet.

Lily’s bracelet.

Then he said:

“But first, choose.””

Adrian stared.

Victor smiled.

“Your mother’s truth…”

May you like

He looked at Rose.

“…or your daughter’s life.””
