Chapter 2: The Envelope
Daniel Harper stood just inside the wedding hall, rain dripping from the shoulders of his gray coat onto the polished marble.
He looked exhausted.
Older than Adrian remembered.
Angrier, too.
And in his right hand was the brown envelope that had just turned the most important day of Adrian Vale’s life into something unrecognizable.
Lily pressed herself against Adrian’s side.
“Uncle Daniel,” she whispered.
Daniel looked at her first.
Then at the baby.
Only after that did he lift his eyes to Adrian.
Their gazes locked across the room.
For a moment, neither man moved.
Then Daniel walked forward.
Vivienne stepped into his path.
“You need to leave,” she said.
Daniel didn’t even look at her.
“I’m not here for you.””
“You’re interrupting a private wedding.””
Daniel finally turned his head.
“No.””
His voice was flat.
“I’m interrupting a lie.””
A collective gasp moved through the guests.
Someone near the back whispered, “Who is this man?””
Vivienne's face tightened.
“Security.””
The two guards took a step forward.
Daniel raised the envelope.
“Touch me, and this goes to every reporter standing outside this building.””
The guards stopped.
Adrian stared at the envelope.
“What is in there?””
Daniel gave a humorless smile.
“You really want to know?””
Adrian stood.
“Yes.””
Daniel walked straight toward him.
Vivienne caught Adrian’s arm.
“Don't.””
Adrian looked at her hand.
Then at her face.
“Why?””
Her fingers slowly slipped away.
“I just think you should be careful.””
“With what?””
She swallowed.
“With people who show up at weddings with stories.””
Daniel stopped several feet away.
“Stories?””
He held up the envelope.
“This isn't a story.””
He tapped it against his palm.
“It’s eight years of evidence.””
Adrian's jaw tightened.
“Evidence of what?””
Daniel looked at Lily.
“What your father did.””
The room went quiet again.
Adrian's expression changed.
“My father?””
Daniel nodded.
“Victor Vale knew Emma was pregnant.””
Adrian's heart seemed to stop.
“What?””
A murmur spread through the crowd.
Adrian looked at Lily.
Then back at Daniel.
“You’re saying my father knew about her?””
“I’m saying he knew everything.””
Vivienne suddenly spoke.
“That's absurd.””
Daniel turned toward her.
“Is it?””
She held his stare.
“Yes.””
Daniel smiled coldly.
“Then you won't mind if I tell Adrian what you know.””
The color vanished from Vivienne's face.
Adrian saw it.
He saw the brief flash of panic in her eyes.
Not confusion.
Not surprise.
Panic.
“What does Vivienne know?”” he asked.
Neither answered.
The orchestra members sat frozen with their instruments in their laps.
Guests who had come expecting champagne and wedding photographs were now watching something far darker unfold.
Adrian took one step toward Daniel.
“Start talking.””
Daniel looked toward the enormous rose-covered altar.
“Not here.””
Adrian glanced around.
“This is the only place everyone's already listening.””
Daniel's eyes hardened.
“Fine.””
He pulled a folded sheet from the envelope.
“This was written by Emma three days before she disappeared.””
Adrian reached for it.
Daniel didn't give it to him.
“You remember the night she came to your penthouse?””
Adrian's face became still.
“Yes.””
“She was pregnant.””
“Yes.””
“She told you.””
Adrian closed his eyes briefly.
There it was.
A memory he had buried so deeply that even now it came back in fragments.
Emma standing by the window.
Her hands trembling.
Her voice barely audible.
I'm pregnant.
He had not believed her.
Or maybe he had believed her and simply refused to understand what it meant.
There had been an argument.
His father had called.
Someone had told Adrian that Emma was manipulating him for money.
Then security had removed her from the building.
Adrian had never seen her again.
But the details had always been strangely unclear.
Like someone had erased pieces of that night.
Daniel watched his face.
“You believed the lie.””
“What lie?””
“That Emma left you.””
Adrian stared at him.
“Didn't she?””
“No.””
Daniel finally handed him the letter.
“She was forced to disappear.””
Adrian unfolded the paper.
The handwriting hit him before the words did.
He knew it instantly.
Emma's letters had always leaned slightly to the right.
The first line was short.
*Adrian, if you're reading this, I failed to get back to you.*
His fingers tightened.
He read on.
*They told me you didn't want us. They said your father had already chosen another future for you. They said if I contacted you again, Lily would disappear.*
Adrian's breathing became shallow.
His eyes moved faster.
*I don't know what to believe anymore. But I know one thing. You promised me you would protect our daughter.*
He stopped.
“Our daughter.””
The words left his mouth as a whisper.
Lily was watching him.
She looked terrified.
Adrian lowered the letter.
“Lily…”
The little girl looked up.
“I'm sorry.””
Her brows drew together.
“For what?””
Adrian couldn't answer.
He crouched in front of her again.
“Did your mother ever show you a picture of me?””
Lily nodded.
“She kept one under her pillow.””
“Did she tell you my name?””
“Yes.””
“What did she tell you about me?””
Lily looked at Daniel.
Daniel gave a small nod.
Then she answered.
“She said you weren't bad.””
Adrian's chest tightened.
“She said you just didn't know.””
Vivienne stepped forward.
“This is emotional manipulation.””
Adrian slowly looked at her.
Vivienne's voice shook now.
“You don't know where this child came from. You don't know whether that letter is genuine. You don't know whether that man has fabricated all of this.””
Daniel laughed once.
“You know what's fascinating?””
He reached into his coat.
“You're right.””
He pulled out another photograph.
“But the DNA test doesn't lie.””
A silence fell.
He extended the photograph toward Adrian.
It showed a laboratory document.
Adrian took it.
His eyes scanned the page.
The words blurred for a second.
Then one sentence became perfectly clear.
*Probability of paternity: 99.9998%.*
His knees almost gave way.
Lily was his.
The toddler in Lily's arms was probably his too.
Eight years.
Eight years of birthdays.
First steps.
First words.
Nightmares.
Fevers.
Christmas mornings.
School photographs.
Every moment he had missed was suddenly standing in front of him.
Adrian looked at Lily.
She gave him a fragile smile.
“I knew you would come.””
A tear escaped before he could stop it.
Vivienne stared at him.
“Adrian…”
He didn't look at her.
“What happened to Emma?””
Daniel's expression hardened.
“She was taken to St. Agnes Clinic three nights ago.””
“Is she alive?””
Daniel hesitated.
That hesitation destroyed Adrian.
“Answer me.””
“She was.””
Adrian's face went white.
“Was?””
Daniel lowered his voice.
“She vanished from the clinic yesterday morning.””
Adrian stared at him.
“What do you mean vanished?””
“She didn't walk out.””
“Then where is she?””
“We don't know.””
Lily began trembling.
Daniel immediately knelt beside her.
“Hey.””
She looked at him.
“Tell him.””
Daniel's eyes filled with grief.
“She left this for you.””
He pulled another object from the envelope.
A tiny brass key.
Adrian took it.
“What does it open?””
“A storage locker.””
“Where?””
“Harper Station.””
Adrian frowned.
“Why would Emma keep something there?””
Daniel looked toward Vivienne.
“Because she was afraid someone in your family would find it.””
Vivienne's lips parted.
“I have no idea what you're talking about.””
Daniel turned.
“Then why did your private investigator pay the clinic director two days ago?””
Several guests gasped.
Vivienne's face hardened.
“That is a lie.””
“Is it?””
Daniel pulled out his phone.
“I have the payment.””
Vivienne took a step backward.
Adrian finally looked at her.
“Did you investigate Emma?””
She stared at him.
“No.””
“You knew she was alive?””
“No.””
“Did you know about Lily?””
“No.””
“Then why are you scared?””
Vivienne's eyes filled with tears.
“I am not scared.””
But her voice betrayed her.
Adrian looked at her for several seconds.
The woman he had planned to marry had stood beside him all morning while hiding something.
He suddenly remembered every strange comment she'd made during the past month.
Every time she had asked whether anyone from Adrian's past was contacting him.
Every time she had insisted he stop asking questions about the years before his father's death.
Every time she had become tense whenever Emma's name appeared in old documents.
Adrian's stomach turned.
Daniel stepped closer.
“There's one more thing.””
“What?””
“The person who took Emma knows about Lily.””
Lily buried her face against Adrian's jacket.
He instinctively wrapped an arm around her.
Daniel continued.
“And they know you have her now.””
Adrian's eyes snapped up.
“What?””
Daniel looked toward the entrance.
Outside, police lights flickered against the tall glass windows.
But that wasn't what had caught his attention.
It was the black SUV idling across the street.
Its rear window was tinted completely dark.
Daniel's expression changed.
“That's them.””
Adrian pulled Lily behind him.
“Who?””
Daniel stared at the vehicle.
“The people who have been searching for your daughter.””
The SUV's driver's door opened.
A man stepped onto the sidewalk.
He looked toward the wedding hall.
Then he lifted a phone to his ear.
Adrian's phone vibrated in his pocket.
Unknown number.
One message appeared on the screen.
*You found Lily.*
May you like
A second message arrived before he could breathe.
*Now choose which daughter you want to save.*
