Chapter 6: The Truth Behind the Red Door
The screen flickered once.
Then Victor Vale's face filled it.
Older than Adrian remembered.
But unmistakable.
The same silver hair.
The same sharp eyes.
The same faint smile that had once made entire boardrooms go silent.
Adrian couldn't breathe.
“Dad?””
Victor leaned closer to the camera.
“My son.””
The little girl standing beneath the screen did not move.
Vivienne backed into the wall.
Daniel's warning echoed in Adrian's head.
Don't trust what you see.
Adrian stepped farther into the room.
“You're dead.””
Victor smiled.
“So you've been told.””
Adrian's hands curled into fists.
“You let me bury you.””
“I let you bury a body.””
The words landed like a slap.
Adrian stared at the screen.
“Why?””
“Because it was necessary.””
“Necessary?””
Victor leaned back.
“Your family's enemies were closing in. The company was vulnerable. Emma had something they wanted.””
“What?””
Victor's smile disappeared.
“The truth.””
Adrian's voice sharpened.
“What truth?””
“The truth about your birth.””
Silence.
Adrian stared at the screen.
“My birth?””
Vivienne whispered, “No.””
Victor's eyes moved slightly, as if he could somehow see her.
“Vivienne.””
She froze.
“You were always too emotional.””
“Where is Emma?”” Adrian demanded.
Victor ignored the question.
“You have spent years believing you were my only son.””
Adrian frowned.
“You are.””
Victor shook his head.
“No.””
The little girl stepped closer to Adrian.
She was wearing a pale pink sweater.
A silver bracelet hung from her wrist.
Adrian recognized the bracelet immediately.
He had seen it in the photograph.
“Who is she?””
Victor finally looked at the child.
“Her name is Rose.””
Adrian stared at her.
“She's my daughter.””
“No.””
Victor's reply came instantly.
“She is your sister.””
Adrian's mind went blank.
The room seemed to tilt.
“What?””
Vivienne covered her mouth.
Victor continued.
“Your mother gave birth to twins.””
Adrian felt his heartbeat in his ears.
“That's impossible.””
“You were the second child.””
The girl looked at him.
Her eyes were exactly the same shade as his.
Dark brown.
Almost black.
Adrian took one step toward her.
“Rose?””
She nodded.
“I've been waiting for you.””
Adrian crouched slowly.
“How old are you?””
“Ten.””
He looked back at the screen.
“Then why did everyone say Emma's baby was dead?””
Victor's expression became cold.
“Because no one was supposed to know she survived.””
Adrian stood.
“Why?””
“Because your mother discovered something.””
“What?””
Victor was silent.
Adrian stepped toward the television.
“Tell me.””
Victor looked directly into the camera.
“She wasn't your biological mother.””
Adrian stopped.
Vivienne gasped.
“What?””
Victor continued calmly.
“Your mother raised you.””
Adrian's voice barely worked.
“Then who was?””
Victor smiled.
“Emma.””
The silence afterward felt endless.
Adrian shook his head.
“No.””
“Emma was twenty years old when she met you.””
Adrian stared.
“That makes no sense.””
“She met you because she was trying to find Rose.””
“Rose?””
Victor nodded.
“Your sister.””
Adrian looked at the little girl.
Rose was watching him without blinking.
Victor continued.
“Emma was given up for adoption as a child. Years later, she discovered the truth about her biological family.””
“What does that have to do with me?””
“You and Rose were separated at birth.””
Adrian's chest tightened.
“Separated?””
“Your mother couldn't keep both children.””
“Why?””
“Because one child was promised to the Vale family.””
Adrian stared.
“To you?””
Victor's expression hardened.
“To the family.””
The screen suddenly crackled.
Adrian stepped closer.
“Where's Emma?””
Victor's face changed.
“She's alive.””
“Where?””
“You're standing in the place where she hid from me.””
Adrian turned.
The room was filled with photographs.
Emma.
Lily.
Rose.
Himself.
His childhood.
His father's board meetings.
His wedding.
Every stage of his life had been documented.
Adrian felt sick.
“How long have you been watching me?””
Victor smiled faintly.
“Since the day you were born.””
Daniel's voice came through Adrian's earpiece.
“Adrian, don't let him control the conversation.””
Adrian looked at the camera.
“You're not actually here.””
Victor nodded.
“Very good.””
“A recording.””
“Yes.””
“Then where are you?””
Victor smiled.
“Closer than you think.””
The little girl suddenly walked toward the far wall.
She placed her hand against a section of wood paneling.
“There's another door.””
Adrian followed her.
She pushed.
A hidden panel opened.
Behind it was a small room.
A hospital bed.
Medical equipment.
A chair.
And on the bed—
a woman.
Adrian's heart stopped.
Emma.
Her hair was longer.
Her face thinner.
But it was her.
Alive.
Barely conscious.
“Emma.””
He rushed forward.
Her eyelids fluttered.
“Adrian?””
His knees hit the floor beside her.
“It’s me.””
She stared at him.
Then tears filled her eyes.
“I knew you'd come.””
He reached for her hand.
It was cold.
Too cold.
“What happened to you?””
Emma tried to sit up.
Adrian helped her.
“They kept me here.””
“Who?””
She looked toward the screen.
“Your father.””
Adrian turned.
Victor was no longer smiling.
“Emma,” he said through the speakers.
She recoiled.
Adrian stood between them.
“You're done.””
Victor's expression remained calm.
“You think this is over?””
“You're not touching her again.””
“You still don't understand.””
“Then explain.””
Victor looked at him.
“You came here because of Lily.””
Adrian's jaw tightened.
“Yes.””
“But Lily was never the target.””
Emma whispered, “Adrian…”
He looked down.
“What?””
“She's not the reason they brought you here.””
“Then what is?””
Emma glanced at Rose.
“Rose.””
Adrian stood.
“Why?””
“Because she knows where the ledger is.””
“What ledger?””
“The one your father spent twenty years hiding.””
Victor interrupted.
“Don't.””
Emma looked at the screen.
“I found it.””
Victor's expression finally changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
Adrian noticed.
“What's in the ledger?””
Emma's eyes filled with tears.
“Every person your father paid.””
“Paid for what?””
She swallowed.
“Disappearances.””
Daniel moved closer.
“Whose disappearances?””
Emma looked at him.
“People who knew about the twins.””
Adrian's stomach dropped.
“My sister.””
“Yes.””
“My mother.””
Emma nodded.
“Your mother tried to expose him.””
“And?””
“She disappeared.””
Adrian looked at Victor.
“You killed her.””
The screen went silent.
Victor's jaw tightened.
Then the image flickered.
For the first time, his composure cracked.
“She betrayed the family.””
Adrian's voice shook with fury.
“She was your wife.””
“She chose outsiders.””
“She chose the truth.””
Victor leaned toward the camera.
“You have no idea what the truth costs.””
Adrian stared at him.
“I know what lies cost.””
Suddenly, a loud metallic bang echoed from somewhere above them.
Everyone froze.
Daniel reached for his weapon.
“Someone's here.””
Another bang.
Closer.
Then another.
Emma grabbed Adrian's wrist.
“Listen to me.””
He looked down.
“When I tell you to run, you run.””
“I’m not leaving you.””
“You have to.””
“No.””
“Adrian.””
Her voice cracked.
“They're here for Rose.””
The little girl moved closer.
“Mommy?””
Emma's face broke.
“I’m sorry.””
Adrian looked toward the hidden doorway.
Footsteps sounded beyond the corridor.
Slow.
Heavy.
Four people.
Maybe more.
Daniel whispered, “We're surrounded.””
The lights went out.
Rose screamed.
Adrian grabbed her.
“Stay with me.””
Emma reached into the side pocket of the bed.
She pulled out a small black key.
“Take this.””
Adrian stared at it.
“What is it?””
“The ledger.””
“Where?””
“The chapel floor.””
Daniel shook his head.
“The chapel?””
Emma nodded.
“Under the altar.””
Adrian looked toward the hallway.
The footsteps had stopped.
Someone was standing just outside the red door.
A man's voice called softly.
“Mr. Vale.””
Adrian knew that voice.
The same voice from the phone.
The same voice Lily had apparently heard before coming to the wedding.
“Give us the girl,” the man said.
Adrian held Rose tighter.
“No.””
The doorknob slowly turned.
Emma whispered into his ear.
“When the door opens, look at the man on the left.””
“Why?””
“Because he's the one who helped me escape.””
The red door opened.
Three men entered.
The first wore a black coat.
The second held a weapon.
And the third—
Adrian's breath caught.
He knew him.
It was the same man whose photograph had been placed beside Victor.
His father's chief security officer.
A man Adrian had watched lower his coffin into the ground six years earlier.
The man smiled.
“Hello, Adrian.””
Adrian stared.
“You're dead.””
The man laughed.
“So was your father.””
Then he raised his weapon toward Rose.
And Emma whispered the words that made Adrian's blood turn to ice.
“That's not Rose.””
Adrian slowly turned toward the child in his arms.
The little girl looked up at him.
May you like
And smiled.
“Hello, Daddy.””
