Chapter 7: The Girl Who Was Never Rose
Adrian felt the child’s fingers tighten around his jacket.
The room seemed to shrink.
The footsteps.
The weapons.
The men surrounding them.
Everything disappeared beneath one sentence.
*“That’s not Rose.””*
He looked down.
The little girl stared back at him with wide brown eyes.
The same eyes he had seen in the photograph.
The same eyes he had believed belonged to his daughter.
“Emma,” Adrian whispered.
Her face was filled with fear.
“I’m sorry.””
The girl tilted her head.
“Daddy?””
Adrian slowly stepped back.
The child’s expression changed.
Not sadness.
Not confusion.
Something colder.
The security officer smiled.
“Smart woman, Emma.””
Adrian looked at him.
“Who is she?””
The man ignored him.
“She almost ruined everything.””
Emma tried to stand.
Her legs shook.
“You don't know what you're doing.””
The man laughed.
“I know exactly what I’m doing.””
Daniel raised his weapon.
“Everybody stay where you are.””
The man looked at him.
“Daniel Harper.””
Daniel froze.
“You know my name?””
“We know everything.””
The officer took another step into the room.
“Your sister was always too curious.””
Adrian’s eyes moved toward Emma.
“Sister?””
Emma looked away.
The officer smiled.
“Finally.””
Adrian stared.
“What?””
“Finally someone is telling him pieces of the truth.””
The lights flickered.
The child beside Adrian suddenly grabbed his hand.
“Daddy, don't leave me.””
The voice was soft.
Almost perfect.
But Adrian felt something wrong.
A memory surfaced.
Lily.
The way she had looked at him.
The way she had said his name.
The way she had trusted him.
This child’s fear felt different.
Rehearsed.
Adrian gently removed his hand.
The girl's smile disappeared.
The officer noticed.
“Very good.””
Adrian looked at him.
“What is her name?””
The man smiled.
“You already know.””
“No.””
Adrian looked at Emma.
“You said she isn't Rose.””
Emma nodded weakly.
“She’s not.””
The girl suddenly screamed.
“Mommy!””
Emma flinched.
Adrian noticed.
Not because she was hearing her daughter.
Because she was hearing a lie.
“Who is she?”” Adrian asked again.
Emma closed her eyes.
Then whispered:
“She’s a copy.””
The room went silent.
Daniel stared.
“A what?””
Emma looked at Adrian.
“Your father spent years creating false identities.””
Adrian shook his head.
“No.””
“He trained children.””
The girl’s expression hardened.
“Don’t listen to her.””
Emma continued.
“He changed their names. Their stories. Their memories.””
Adrian looked at the child.
The child looked back.
“I’m Rose.””
Her voice was confident.
Too confident.
Emma’s eyes filled with tears.
“Rose was taken before she was ten.””
Adrian’s breathing became uneven.
“Where is she?””
Emma looked toward the door.
“I don't know.””
The security officer laughed.
“She knows.””
Adrian turned.
“You do?””
The man shrugged.
“She always knew more than she admitted.””
Emma’s face turned pale.
“Victor promised he would never hurt her.””
The officer smiled.
“Victor promised a lot of things.””
The name hung in the air.
Victor.
The man who had destroyed everything.
The man Adrian had spent his entire life trying to understand.
“Where is my sister?”” Adrian demanded.
The officer looked at the fake Rose.
“She’s very close.””
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“Meaning?””
The man pointed.
“Meaning she’s the reason you’re here.””
The child stepped forward.
“I can show you.””
Emma grabbed Adrian’s arm.
“No.””
The child looked at her.
“Mommy.””
Emma recoiled.
Adrian saw it.
The fear.
The recognition.
Not of a daughter.
Of an enemy.
The fake Rose smiled.
“Victor said you would react exactly like this.””
Adrian froze.
“Victor is alive?””
The officer laughed.
“You still think the recording was the important part?””
The room fell silent.
Adrian slowly looked toward the television.
The screen was black.
The officer walked toward it.
Pressed a button.
A hidden panel opened.
Behind the screen was a camera.
A live feed.
And on it—
Victor Vale sat in a chair.
Alive.
Watching.
Adrian stared.
His father looked older.
Tired.
But alive.
“Hello, Adrian.””
The sound came through the speakers.
Adrian felt anger rise through him.
“You're a monster.””
Victor didn't react.
“You always were emotional.””
“You kidnapped my children.””
“I protected the family.””
“You destroyed it.””
Victor leaned forward.
“You still don't understand what family means.””
Adrian laughed bitterly.
“Family?””
He looked at Emma.
At Rose.
At the child pretending to be his daughter.
“You don't get to use that word.””
Victor’s expression darkened.
“You think you know the truth because Emma gave you a few pieces.””
“She gave me the truth.””
“No.””
Victor shook his head.
“She gave you her version.””
Adrian stepped toward the screen.
“Then give me yours.””
For a moment, Victor said nothing.
Then:
“You were never supposed to be CEO.””
Adrian frowned.
“What?””
“You were supposed to disappear.””
Daniel looked at him.
Adrian felt cold.
“Why?””
“Because you weren't obedient.””
Victor's voice remained calm.
“You loved people outside the family.””
“Like Emma?””
“Yes.””
“Like Lily?””
“Yes.””
“Like my mother?””
Victor looked away.
Just for a second.
But Adrian saw it.
“You killed her.””
Victor didn't answer.
That was answer enough.
Emma whispered:
“Adrian.””
He looked at her.
“The ledger.””
She pointed to the black key.
“Your father didn't keep records of crimes.””
“Then what?””
“He kept records of replacements.””
Adrian frowned.
“Replacements?””
Emma looked at the fake Rose.
“Children who were trained to become someone else.””
The girl’s face changed.
The innocent expression vanished.
She looked older suddenly.
More dangerous.
“You shouldn’t have told him.””
Emma stared at her.
“I’m sorry.””
The fake Rose smiled.
“You always say that.””
Adrian moved in front of Emma.
“Who are you?””
The girl looked at him.
“My name is Clara.””
“Where is Rose?””
Clara smiled.
“Do you really want to know?””
“Yes.””
She walked toward the wall.
She pressed a hidden button.
Another door opened.
Inside was a small room.
A single chair.
A camera.
And dozens of photographs.
Adrian stepped closer.
Then stopped.
Because among the photographs was one image that made his blood run cold.
Lily.
But older.
Around ten years old.
Standing beside Rose.
And beneath the picture:
*SUBJECT TWO — SUCCESSFUL TRANSFORMATION*
Daniel whispered:
“No.””
Adrian looked at Emma.
“What does this mean?””
Emma looked devastated.
“It means Victor wasn't only hiding Rose.””
“What else?””
“He was preparing Lily.””
Adrian’s face changed.
“No.””
“He wanted to take your daughters and turn them into proof that no one could escape him.””
Victor’s voice came from the speaker.
“You're finally seeing the bigger picture.””
Adrian turned.
“Where is Lily?””
Victor smiled.
A terrible, calm smile.
“Safe.””
“Where?””
“With the person you trusted most.””
Adrian froze.
The wedding.
The hotel.
Daniel.
His blood ran cold.
“No.””
Victor continued.
“You left Lily with someone.””
Adrian grabbed his phone.
He called Daniel.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
Emma looked at him.
“Who did you leave her with?””
Adrian couldn't speak.
Because the answer had already arrived.
A new message appeared.
From Daniel’s phone.
But it wasn't Daniel.
A photograph loaded.
Lily and Anna sitting inside a car.
A hand resting on Lily’s shoulder.
The person behind them was blurred.
Then a message appeared.
*You chose the wrong daughter first.*
Adrian dropped the phone.
The fake Rose smiled.
Victor spoke one final time.
“Now you understand.””
Adrian looked at the screen.
“What do you want?””
Victor leaned closer.
“Bring me the ledger.””
“And if I don't?””
Victor looked at the photograph of Lily.
“Then you'll lose both daughters.””
The feed cut.
The room went silent.
Emma grabbed Adrian’s hand.
“Don’t give him the ledger.””
Adrian looked at her.
“He has Lily.””
“He wants you to believe that.””
“What?””
Emma shook her head.
“Victor always uses fear.””
The security officer suddenly moved.
Daniel reacted instantly.
A gunshot exploded through the room.
Everyone froze.
The bullet struck the wall inches from Adrian.
The officer smiled.
“You’re out of time.””
The fake Rose stepped beside him.
And whispered:
“Daddy…”
Adrian turned.
She held something in her hand.
A small device.
A tracking signal.
She smiled.
“Thank you for bringing me here.””
The red light blinked.
Emma’s face went white.
“What is that?””
The girl answered.
“The way they find Rose.””
Adrian stared.
The officer raised his weapon again.
And from somewhere deep beneath the mill…
A child screamed.
“ADRIAN!””
Emma’s eyes widened.
Because she recognized the voice.
“Rose.””
May you like
Then the entire building shook.
And the floor beneath them began to collapse.
