Chapter 7: The Man Behind The Secret
Daniel couldn’t move.
The DNA report shook slightly in his hand.
Not because he doubted what he was reading.
Because he didn’t know which truth hurt more.
The possibility that Rachel had betrayed him.
Or the possibility that someone had spent years manipulating him.
He looked at Victoria.
“Who is he?””
She didn’t answer.
“Victoria.””
Her eyes moved away.
“Tell me.””
Silence.
Then she whispered:
“You already know him.””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Victoria looked at the DNA report.
Then back at him.
“The man Rachel was with before you.””
Daniel felt his stomach twist.
Because suddenly memories he had buried started returning.
The arguments.
The strange phone calls.
The nights Rachel stayed awake.
The name she refused to mention.
A name he had once asked about.
A name she told him meant nothing.
“Who?””
Victoria’s lips parted.
“Michael.””
Daniel froze.
Michael Hayes.
Rachel’s childhood friend.
The man who had attended their wedding.
The man who had stood beside Daniel at the funeral.
The man who had hugged him and said:
“I’m so sorry.””
Daniel stepped back.
“No.””
Victoria watched him.
“You remember.””
“He was her friend.””
“He was more than that.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You’re lying.””
“Am I?””
His anger rose.
“You expect me to believe you after everything?””
Victoria’s expression softened.
“Daniel, I know what this looks like.””
“You don’t know anything.””
“I know you’re hurt.””
“Hurt?””
He laughed bitterly.
“You hid my entire life from me.””
“I protected a child.””
“You stole my family.””
Victoria flinched.
But she didn’t deny it.
That silence was enough.
Daniel turned away.
His mind was racing.
Rachel.
Michael.
Lucas.
The secrets.
The lies.
Nothing fit.
Then something hit him.
“If Lucas wasn’t mine…”
He looked at Victoria.
“Why did Rachel write that I shouldn’t trust you?””
Victoria’s face changed.
“I told you.””
“She was afraid.””
“Of me.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Victoria hesitated.
And Daniel saw it again.
The missing piece.
The thing she had been avoiding.
“You know.””
Victoria looked down.
“I know what?””
“You know why Rachel died.””
The room became silent.
For several seconds, Victoria said nothing.
Then she whispered:
“Daniel…”
“No.””
He stepped closer.
“You have spent years telling me half-truths.””
His voice lowered.
“I want the whole truth.””
Victoria sat down.
For the first time, she looked exhausted.
Not powerful.
Not controlled.
Just tired.
“Rachel found out.””
“Found out what?””
“That Michael was planning to take Lucas away.””
Daniel frowned.
“What?””
“Michael wanted custody.””
“Why?””
Victoria looked at him.
“Because Lucas was his son.””
Daniel stared.
“You just said that.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“I mean something else.””
A chill ran through Daniel.
“What?””
Victoria looked directly at him.
“Michael didn’t know Lucas existed.””
Daniel’s confusion deepened.
“What are you talking about?””
“Rachel never told him.””
“Why?””
“Because she was afraid.””
“Of Michael?””
“No.””
Victoria’s voice dropped.
“Of what would happen if the truth came out.””
Daniel looked at the DNA report again.
“Why?””
Victoria didn’t answer.
Instead, she walked toward the closet.
She opened the door.
Behind a row of expensive clothes was a small metal box.
She pulled it out.
“I kept this because I knew one day you would find out.””
Daniel stared.
“What is it?””
“Everything Rachel left behind.””
She opened the box.
Inside were letters.
Hundreds of them.
Daniel picked one up.
The handwriting was Rachel’s.
But this time, he didn’t immediately trust it.
“Read the first one.””
Victoria’s voice was quiet.
Daniel opened it.
Michael,
I need you to understand why I made this choice.
Daniel is the father Lucas deserves, even if biology says otherwise.
Daniel stopped.
His heart skipped.
He read faster.
You love him because he loves our son. You love him because he was there when I was afraid.
Daniel looked up.
“What is this?””
Victoria didn’t answer.
He continued.
But I cannot tell Daniel the truth.
Not yet.
If he knows Lucas is not biologically his, he may see him differently.
Daniel closed his eyes.
A painful thought crossed his mind.
Was that true?
Would he have?
The answer came immediately.
No.
Never.
But Rachel had been afraid.
And fear made people do terrible things.
He kept reading.
Michael, please stay away. Please let Lucas have a normal life.
Daniel is his father in every way that matters.
Daniel lowered the letter.
“What happened?””
Victoria looked away.
“Michael didn’t listen.””
The next hour disappeared into pieces of a story Daniel never knew.
Michael had continued contacting Rachel.
He wanted to meet Lucas.
He wanted to be part of his son’s life.
Rachel refused.
Then came the threats.
Not violent.
Not obvious.
But enough.
Messages.
Calls.
Warnings.
And then Rachel died.
Daniel looked at Victoria.
“You’re saying Michael killed her?””
“I’m saying Rachel was afraid of him.””
“That’s not proof.””
“No.””
Victoria looked at him.
“But it’s why she created the basement room.””
Daniel remembered the cameras.
The files.
The hidden evidence.
“She was collecting proof.””
“Yes.””
“Against Michael.””
“Yes.””
Daniel walked to the window.
The city outside continued moving.
People living normal lives.
While his own life had been built on secrets.
“Where is Michael now?””
Victoria became quiet.
Daniel turned.
“Where?””
“He disappeared after Rachel died.””
“Convenient.””
“I agree.””
For the first time, they agreed on something.
Daniel looked back at the letter.
Then he noticed something.
A date.
The letter was written three days before Rachel’s accident.
His eyes narrowed.
“Wait.””
Victoria looked at him.
“What?””
Daniel pointed.
“This date.””
She stepped closer.
“What about it?””
“Rachel wrote this three days before she died.””
“Yes.””
“But she also wrote that she was going to tell me.””
Victoria’s face changed.
“What?””
Daniel read the final lines.
I will tell Daniel tomorrow.
He deserves the truth.
I cannot continue lying to the man who raised my children.
Daniel looked up.
“Tomorrow never came.””
Victoria went pale.
Because they both understood.
Someone had stopped Rachel from telling him.
That night, Daniel sat alone in his office again.
But this time, he wasn’t looking at the past.
He was looking for the person still hiding in the present.
His computer showed security footage.
The mansion.
The hallway.
The basement.
The upstairs room.
He had spent years believing cameras protected his home.
Now he realized they had only recorded the secrets inside it.
A notification appeared.
New footage recovered.
Daniel opened it.
A camera angle from the day Rachel died.
The footage was damaged.
Broken.
But visible.
A car parked outside the mansion.
Daniel leaned closer.
The driver stepped out.
His face was hidden.
Then the passenger door opened.
A woman stepped out.
Daniel froze.
Victoria.
But she wasn’t alone.
The man beside her turned toward the camera.
Daniel stopped breathing.
Because he knew him.
He had seen him at the funeral.
He had trusted him.
He had called him a friend.
Michael Hayes.
The footage continued.
Victoria and Michael entered the house together.
Three hours before Rachel’s accident.
Daniel watched in silence.
Then the camera caught one final moment.
Michael leaving.
Victoria staying behind.
Holding something in her hand.
A small envelope.
The same kind of envelope Rachel had hidden in the basement.
Daniel stood slowly.
His phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
Another message.
This time, there was a video attached.
The message read:
*You’re finally seeing the truth. But you still don’t know who killed Rachel.*
Daniel pressed play.
The video showed the mansion driveway.
The night Rachel died.
A car leaving.
The license plate was visible.
Daniel recognized it immediately.
Because it belonged to someone who was standing inside his house right now.
The video ended.
May you like
Then came one final message.
*Ask your wife why she was the one who drove Rachel’s car that night.*
