Chapter 5: The Child Hidden In The Photograph

Daniel stared at the photograph on his phone.

A baby.

A tiny child wrapped in a white blanket.

Victoria holding him.

Smiling.

Not the polite smile she used at charity events.

Not the controlled smile she showed cameras.

A real smile.

A smile Daniel had never seen directed at Emma.

His hand tightened around the phone.

The message from the unknown number remained on the screen.

*Ask her about him.*

Daniel looked at the locked door in front of him.

The room where Victoria had hidden something for years.

Something connected to a child he had never known existed.

His first instinct was to wake her up.

To demand answers.

To drag the truth out of her no matter what it took.

But something stopped him.

Years of experience had taught Daniel one thing.

People who hid secrets rarely revealed them when cornered.

They revealed them when they believed they were still in control.

And right now…

Victoria thought she was.

Daniel lowered his phone.

Then quietly walked away from the door.

The next morning, Victoria acted like nothing had happened.

That bothered Daniel more than if she had looked guilty.

She walked into the kitchen wearing an expensive dress, her hair perfectly styled, her expression calm.

“Good morning.””

Daniel sat at the table drinking coffee.

“Morning.””

She poured herself a cup.

“Emma left for school?””

“Yes.””

A small smile appeared on Victoria’s face.

“She seemed happier today.””

Daniel watched her carefully.

“You noticed?””

“Of course.””

She sat down.

“I care about her.””

Daniel almost responded.

Almost.

Instead, he placed his cup down.

“Victoria.””

She looked up.

“Yes?””

“I found something interesting last night.””

Her fingers stopped moving.

Only for a second.

“What?””

Daniel unlocked his phone and placed the photograph on the table.

He watched every movement.

Every reaction.

At first, Victoria looked confused.

Then she saw the picture.

The color disappeared from her face.

The spoon in her hand slipped and hit the plate.

A small metallic sound.

But it sounded louder than a scream.

Daniel leaned forward.

“Who is he?””

Victoria stared at the image.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then she whispered:

“Where did you get this?””

“That’s not an answer.””

“Daniel.””

“Who is the child?””

Victoria looked toward the window.

“I can explain.””

“I hope you can.””

Her breathing became uneven.

“He’s my son.””

The words landed quietly.

But they destroyed everything.

Daniel sat back.

“Your son?””

“Yes.””

“Since when?””

Victoria looked down.

“He was born before I met you.””

Daniel stared at her.

“Why didn’t I know?””

She didn’t answer.

“Victoria.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because I lost him.””

Daniel’s anger paused.

“Lost him?””

“He died.””

The room became silent.

Daniel looked back at the photograph.

The baby.

The smile.

The memory.

“When?””

“Five years ago.””

Daniel frowned.

Five years.

That was before Rachel died.

Before he married Victoria.

Before everything changed.

“What was his name?””

Victoria’s voice cracked.

“Lucas.””

Daniel looked away.

He didn’t know what to feel.

A part of him felt anger.

Another part felt confusion.

Because grief was something he understood.

He had lost Rachel.

He knew what losing a child could do to a person.

But something didn’t make sense.

“If Lucas died five years ago…”

He pointed at the picture.

“Why hide this room?””

Victoria looked at him.

Her silence answered before her words did.

“Because I couldn’t let go.””

Daniel studied her.

“That’s not the whole truth.””

Her face tightened.

“You always think there’s another explanation.””

“Because there always is with you.””

The accusation hurt her.

Or at least she acted like it did.

“You think I’m a monster.””

“I think you lied to me.””

Victoria stood.

“I didn’t lie.””

“You hid an entire child.””

“I was grieving.””

“You married me while hiding this.””

She looked away.

“I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

Victoria’s voice became smaller.

“That you would leave me.””

Daniel frowned.

“Why would I leave you because you lost a child?””

Victoria didn’t answer.

And again, Daniel noticed.

The hesitation.

The missing piece.

He stood.

“Where is the room?””

Her expression changed.

“What?””

“The upstairs room.””

A long pause.

“I don’t know what you mean.””

Daniel laughed softly.

“No.””

He stepped closer.

“You do.””

Victoria’s face hardened.

“Who told you about that room?””

“Emma.””

That was enough.

Victoria’s entire expression changed.

Not sadness.

Not guilt.

Fear.

Real fear.

“What did she tell you?””

Daniel noticed immediately.

“You’re more worried about what she knows than what I know.””

Victoria looked away.

“Daniel, you don’t understand.””

“Then help me understand.””

She said nothing.

He waited.

Finally, she whispered:

“Lucas wasn’t just my son.””

Daniel felt a chill.

“What does that mean?””

Victoria closed her eyes.

“He was Rachel’s son too.””

The world seemed to stop.

Daniel stared at her.

“What?””

Victoria’s voice trembled.

“Before Rachel met you, she helped me.””

“Helped you with what?””

“She helped me when I was pregnant.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

“She was my friend.””

“No.””

“She knew Lucas.””

“Stop.””

Daniel’s voice became sharper.

“Rachel never had another child.””

Victoria looked at him.

“She did.””

Daniel stepped back.

Because that was impossible.

Rachel had Emma.

Only Emma.

He knew that.

He was there.

He remembered every appointment.

Every ultrasound.

Every night holding his newborn daughter.

“Victoria, what are you saying?””

She looked directly at him.

“Rachel had twins.””

Daniel couldn’t speak.

The kitchen suddenly felt too small.

The walls.

The ceiling.

Everything seemed to close around him.

“Twins?””

Victoria nodded slowly.

“Emma had a brother.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You’re lying.””

“I’m not.””

“Rachel would have told me.””

Victoria looked away.

“That’s the problem.””

“What problem?””

“She didn’t want you to know.””

Daniel felt anger rising.

“Why?””

Victoria’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because she believed you would take him away.””

“Take him away?””

“She thought you weren’t ready.””

Daniel stared.

“That makes no sense.””

Victoria reached for the photograph.

“Lucas was sick when he was born.””

Daniel said nothing.

“He needed constant medical care.””

“And?””

“And Rachel blamed herself.””

“For what?””

Victoria whispered:

“For causing it.””

Daniel looked confused.

“Causing it how?””

Victoria didn’t answer.

“Victoria.””

She looked at him.

“Rachel made a choice.””

“What choice?””

A tear rolled down Victoria’s face.

“She gave Lucas to me.””

Daniel froze.

“No.””

“She thought I could give him the life he needed.””

“No.””

“She told everyone he died.””

Daniel stepped away.

“That’s insane.””

“I raised him.””

“Where is he?””

Victoria looked down.

“He didn’t survive.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

The story was impossible.

Cruel.

Confusing.

But one question remained.

“If Lucas died…”

He opened his eyes.

“Why was there a picture of you holding him in this house?””

Victoria didn’t respond.

Daniel’s voice lowered.

“And why did Rachel leave me a message saying not to trust you?””

Victoria’s face changed.

The tears stopped.

Something colder appeared.

“Because Rachel found out.””

“Found out what?””

Victoria looked toward the hallway.

Toward the hidden room.

Then she whispered:

“She found out Lucas didn’t die.””

Daniel froze.

The silence was deafening.

“What?””

Victoria looked at him.

“Lucas survived.””

Daniel stared.

“That’s impossible.””

“No.””

Her voice shook.

“That’s why Rachel was scared.””

Daniel’s heart started pounding.

“Where is he?””

Victoria didn’t answer.

“Where is Rachel’s son?””

Victoria’s lips trembled.

Then her phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

And all the color left her face.

Daniel noticed the caller name.

*Unknown.*

She didn’t answer.

The phone kept ringing.

Then a message appeared.

Victoria saw it.

And immediately dropped the phone.

Daniel picked it up.

The message was short.

But it changed everything.

*He knows the truth now.*

Daniel looked at Victoria.

“Who sent this?””

She didn’t speak.

“Victoria.””

Her eyes filled with fear.

Then she whispered the one sentence Daniel never expected to hear.

“Your son is alive.””

Daniel’s blood ran cold.

Because for the first time in four years…

May you like

he realized he might not only have lost his wife.

He might have lost a child he never knew existed.
