Chapter 3: The Room She Never Opened
Daniel didn’t sleep.
Not even for a minute.
The note from Rachel sat on his desk all night, untouched but impossible to ignore.
The words were burned into his mind.
Do not trust the person who tells you my death was an accident.
For four years, Daniel had replayed the worst day of his life.
The phone call.
The hospital.
The doctor’s quiet voice.
The funeral.
Everyone had told him the same thing.
Rachel lost control of her car on a rainy road.
A tragic accident.
A horrible moment of bad luck.
Daniel had accepted it because he had no reason not to.
Until now.
Now, every memory felt different.
Every conversation.
Every detail.
Especially the one person who had always been beside him afterward.
Victoria.
At 5:30 in the morning, Daniel finally stood from his chair.
His eyes were exhausted, but his mind was clear.
He knew one thing.
He needed answers.
And he needed them before Victoria realized he was looking.
The basement door was hidden behind a large painting in the east hallway.
Most people didn’t even know it existed.
The mansion had been built before Daniel purchased it, and the previous owner had used the underground level for private storage.
Daniel had never cared about it.
Until now.
Ethan stood beside the door holding a tablet.
“I pulled everything from the security system,” he said.
Daniel looked at him.
“Tell me exactly what you found.””
Ethan hesitated.
“There are missing files.””
“How many?””
“Four years’ worth.””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“Four years?””
“Yes.””
“Starting when?””
Ethan looked down at the tablet.
“The week Rachel died.””
The words landed heavily.
Daniel looked at the locked basement door.
“Open it.””
Ethan entered a code.
The light above the door flashed red.
Denied.
They tried again.
Still denied.
Daniel frowned.
“What is wrong?””
Ethan swallowed.
“The system doesn’t recognize my access.””
“You said you had clearance.””
“I do.””
“Then why won’t it open?””
Ethan stared at the screen.
“Because someone changed the permissions.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Who?””
Ethan looked uncomfortable.
“Someone with administrator access.””
Daniel already knew the answer.
“Victoria.””
But Ethan shook his head.
“No.””
Daniel looked at him.
“What?””
“The administrator account wasn’t hers.””
“Then whose was it?””
Ethan turned the tablet toward him.
A name appeared.
Daniel stared.
His entire body went cold.
*Rachel Carter.*
For a moment, neither man spoke.
“That’s impossible,” Daniel whispered.
“I know.””
“She’s been dead for four years.””
“I know.””
Daniel looked at the locked door again.
A thousand questions filled his head.
How?
Why?
And most importantly…
What was hidden behind that door?
“Override it.””
Ethan nodded.
After several attempts, the lock finally clicked.
The basement door slowly opened.
A wave of cold air rushed out.
The lights flickered on one by one.
The basement was nothing like Daniel expected.
He thought he would find old furniture.
Boxes.
Forgotten belongings.
Instead, he found a room that looked like someone had been using it recently.
There was a desk.
A computer.
Stacks of documents.
And on the wall…
Photographs.
Daniel walked closer.
His breathing stopped.
They were pictures of Rachel.
Hundreds of them.
Rachel leaving work.
Rachel driving.
Rachel walking through the city.
Rachel sitting in restaurants.
Someone had been watching her.
Following her.
For months.
“Who did this?”” Daniel whispered.
Ethan didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
Daniel already felt the answer approaching.
Then he saw something on the desk.
A small wooden box.
His name was written on top.
*Daniel.*
His fingers shook as he opened it.
Inside were three things.
A USB drive.
A photograph.
And a letter.
He picked up the photograph first.
It showed Rachel standing outside the hospital.
Holding Emma as a baby.
Daniel smiled sadly.
A memory.
A happy memory.
Then he flipped it over.
A sentence was written on the back.
The person who saves your child may not be the person you think.
Daniel frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Ethan looked at the USB drive.
“Maybe we should find out.””
They brought the computer upstairs.
Daniel waited until Emma left for school.
He didn’t want her anywhere near this.
Not until he knew the truth.
The USB drive contained only one video file.
Created four years earlier.
The date made Daniel’s heart race.
The day before Rachel died.
He clicked play.
The screen showed Rachel sitting in this same basement.
She looked tired.
Scared.
But alive.
Daniel leaned forward.
“Rachel…”
Her eyes looked directly into the camera.
“If you’re watching this, something went wrong.””
Daniel stopped breathing.
Rachel continued.
“I don’t know who found this room. I don’t know how much time I have left.””
She looked over her shoulder.
Like she was afraid someone might walk in.
“I made a mistake.””
Daniel’s hands tightened.
“What mistake?””
The video continued.
“I thought I could fix it myself.””
Rachel reached toward the camera.
“I thought if I collected enough proof, I could protect Emma.””
Daniel froze.
Emma.
Not herself.
Emma.
“I need you to understand something, Daniel,” Rachel said.
“The person closest to us is not who they appear to be.””
A shadow moved behind her.
Rachel turned quickly.
Her face changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
“Someone is here.””
The video shook.
Daniel sat up.
“Rachel?””
Her voice became a whisper.
“If anything happens to me, do not let Victoria raise Emma alone.””
The screen went black.
Daniel stared.
The room was silent.
Then Ethan spoke softly.
“Sir…”
Daniel didn’t answer.
He couldn’t.
Because Rachel had just confirmed his worst fear.
Victoria wasn’t innocent.
But before Daniel could process it, the video restarted.
A second part appeared.
One he hadn’t noticed.
Rachel was back on screen.
But this time, she wasn’t alone.
Someone was standing beside her.
The person’s face was hidden.
But Daniel recognized the voice immediately.
A voice he heard every day.
A voice he trusted.
Victoria.
Daniel stepped backward.
“No…”
The video showed Victoria placing a folder on the table.
Rachel looked at her.
“You promised me.””
Victoria smiled.
A cold, unfamiliar smile.
“I promised you nothing.””
Daniel’s blood ran cold.
Because for the first time, he saw the woman he married without the mask.
Rachel continued.
“You’re destroying everything.””
Victoria laughed quietly.
“You already destroyed everything yourself.””
The video ended.
Daniel stood frozen.
Then his phone rang.
The caller ID appeared.
*Emma’s school.*
His heart jumped.
He answered immediately.
“Hello?””
A woman’s worried voice came through.
“Mr. Carter, this is Emma’s teacher.””
Daniel gripped the phone.
“What happened?””
There was a pause.
“Emma came to school today with a bruise on her arm.””
His face changed.
“A bruise?””
“Yes.””
“Did she say what happened?””
The teacher lowered her voice.
“She said she fell.””
Daniel looked toward the basement.
Toward Rachel’s hidden evidence.
Toward everything he had ignored.
“Did you believe her?””
The teacher hesitated.
“No.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Why?””
“Because Emma looked at me the same way she looked last month.””
“What way?””
The teacher answered quietly.
“Like she was afraid someone would punish her for telling the truth.””
Daniel ended the call.
He didn’t wait.
He didn’t think.
He grabbed his keys and rushed toward the garage.
But as he reached the front door, he stopped.
Because standing there was Victoria.
Holding a piece of paper.
Her face was calm.
Too calm.
“Where are you going, Daniel?””
He stared at her.
Then at the paper in her hand.
“What is that?””
Victoria smiled slightly.
“Something you should have seen four years ago.””
Daniel didn’t move.
“What does that mean?””
Victoria stepped closer.
“It means you’ve been looking for the wrong villain.””
She placed the paper in his hand.
And whispered:
“Your first wife wasn’t the victim, Daniel.””
His eyes moved across the page.
And as he read the first sentence, his entire world shifted.
May you like
Because the document had Rachel’s signature.
And it was a confession.
