Chapter 2: The Secret Behind The Locked Door
Daniel didn’t move.
The words from the security camera repeated in his mind like a warning alarm.
“Your father needs to know what she did to your mother.””
For several seconds, he simply stood there, staring at the frozen image on the monitor.
Emma.
His little girl.
Looking at a stranger with tears in her eyes.
And behind her, Victoria.
Still sitting at the breakfast table.
Still completely unaware that someone had just revealed a secret Daniel had spent years believing was buried forever.
His hand slowly reached for the keyboard.
He rewound the footage.
Again.
And again.
The stranger’s face was never fully visible.
A baseball cap covered most of their features. A dark jacket hid their body. They had moved carefully, almost like they knew exactly where every camera was pointed.
But Daniel noticed something.
The person wasn’t trying to hurt Emma.
They had been trying to help her.
The object they placed beside her backpack was still visible.
A small envelope.
Daniel grabbed his phone and called the head of mansion security.
The call connected after two rings.
“Mr. Carter?””
“Ethan, I need every camera recording from the last six months.””
A pause.
“Sir?””
“Every camera. Every room. Every blind spot.””
“Did something happen?””
Daniel stared at the screen.
His voice dropped.
“Yes.””
He looked at Emma’s frightened face.
“Something has been happening inside my house.””
The mansion felt different when Daniel arrived twenty minutes later.
Usually, the place represented everything he had built.
The grand staircase.
The paintings.
The enormous windows overlooking the private gardens.
A home designed to show success.
But now, walking through the front door, all Daniel could see were the places where his daughter had been suffering.
The hallway floor.
The dining room.
The kitchen.
Every corner suddenly felt like evidence.
Victoria walked down the stairs when she heard him enter.
Her expression changed from surprise to happiness within seconds.
“Daniel?””
She smiled.
“You’re home early.””
He looked at her.
She stopped.
Something in his eyes told her this wasn’t a normal visit.
“Is everything okay?”” she asked.
Daniel placed his briefcase down slowly.
“Where is Emma?””
Victoria’s smile became smaller.
“Emma?””
“Yes. Where is my daughter?””
“She’s upstairs.””
“Doing what?””
Victoria tilted her head.
“What do you mean?””
Daniel stepped closer.
“I asked where she is.””
For the first time, Victoria looked uncomfortable.
“She’s getting ready for school.””
Daniel almost laughed.
Almost.
Instead, he looked toward the hallway.
“The same way she was getting ready this morning?””
Victoria blinked.
“What does that mean?””
“You tell me.””
The silence between them grew heavy.
Victoria crossed her arms.
“I don’t understand what you’re accusing me of.””
Daniel studied her face.
The woman he married.
The woman who cried with him at Emma’s mother’s funeral.
The woman who promised she would protect his daughter.
“I checked the cameras.””
The color disappeared from Victoria’s face.
Only for a second.
But Daniel saw it.
“You checked…” she repeated.
“Yes.””
Her eyes moved away.
A tiny movement.
But enough.
“What did you see?”” she asked carefully.
Daniel’s anger rose.
“You know exactly what I saw.””
Victoria took a breath.
“Daniel, you’re misunderstanding something.””
“Am I?””
“Yes.””
She walked toward him.
“Emma has been struggling with discipline lately. I was trying to teach her responsibility.””
“Responsibility?””
His voice became sharper.
“She was scrubbing floors in her school uniform.””
Victoria sighed.
“You make it sound terrible.””
“It was terrible.””
“She spilled juice on the hallway carpet last week.””
“So you made a ten-year-old clean the entire floor?””
“It wasn’t punishment.””
Daniel stared at her.
“Then what was it?””
Victoria hesitated.
“Character building.””
The answer made his stomach turn.
Before he could respond, a small voice came from the staircase.
“Daddy?””
Daniel looked up.
Emma stood there holding her backpack.
Her eyes immediately went to Victoria.
Not him.
Victoria.
As if asking permission to breathe.
Daniel noticed.
And that hurt more than anything.
“Emma.””
His voice softened.
“Come here.””
She slowly walked down the stairs.
When she reached him, Daniel opened his arms.
For a moment, Emma didn’t move.
Then she stepped forward and hugged him tightly.
Daniel felt her shaking.
“You’re okay,” he whispered.
Emma nodded against his chest.
But she didn’t say anything.
Daniel pulled back.
“Sweetheart, why didn’t you tell me?””
Emma looked down.
“Tell you what?””
“That you’ve been cleaning.””
Her fingers tightened around her backpack straps.
“I didn’t want to make you upset.””
“Emma.””
“I thought you would be mad.””
“Mad at who?””
She didn’t answer.
Daniel crouched down.
“Emma, look at me.””
Slowly, she raised her eyes.
“Did Victoria tell you not to tell me?””
Emma’s face changed.
A small reaction.
A frightened reaction.
And Daniel saw it.
“Emma?””
The girl looked toward the staircase again.
Then whispered:
“She said you were too busy.””
Daniel’s heart sank.
“What else did she say?””
Emma stayed silent.
Victoria stepped forward.
“That’s enough.””
Daniel stood.
“No.””
“Daniel—”
“No.””
His voice was calm now.
Which scared Victoria more than anger.
“I want to hear my daughter.””
Emma looked between them.
Then slowly reached into her backpack.
She pulled out a folded piece of paper.
“I found this.””
Daniel took it.
“What is it?””
“I don’t know.””
The paper was old.
Yellowed.
The edges were torn.
Daniel unfolded it.
And immediately recognized the handwriting.
His breathing stopped.
Because it belonged to someone who had been gone for four years.
Emma’s mother.
Rachel.
His hands trembled.
“Where did you get this?””
Emma glanced toward the hallway.
“The woman gave it to me.””
“What woman?””
“The one who came today.””
Victoria suddenly spoke.
“There was no woman.””
Everyone turned.
Victoria’s face was pale.
Daniel slowly looked at her.
“You’re sure?””
“Yes.””
“You’re saying my daughter is lying?””
“No.””
Victoria shook her head quickly.
“I’m saying she’s confused.””
Daniel looked back at the paper.
Rachel’s handwriting stared back at him.
A message he had never seen.
A message hidden from him.
He unfolded the page completely.
Only one sentence was written.
Daniel.
If you are reading this, then something happened to me.
His chest tightened.
He read the next line.
And the room seemed to disappear.
Do not trust the person who tells you my death was an accident.
Daniel looked up.
Victoria was watching him.
And for the first time since he had known her…
She looked afraid.
That night, Daniel locked himself inside his office.
The mansion was silent.
Too silent.
The note from Rachel sat on his desk.
He had spent hours searching through old documents, emails, and records.
Nothing.
No explanation.
No answers.
Only questions.
At midnight, Ethan from security called.
“Sir?””
Daniel immediately answered.
“Did you find anything?””
A pause.
“Yes.””
Daniel sat forward.
“What?””
“We recovered deleted footage.””
“From where?””
“The basement.””
Daniel frowned.
“The basement cameras were disabled.””
“That’s what we thought.””
Ethan lowered his voice.
“But someone didn’t disable them.””
Daniel felt a chill.
“What do you mean?””
“The footage was manually hidden.””
“Hidden by who?””
Another pause.
Then Ethan said:
“Mr. Carter… the person who accessed the basement security system was not Emma’s stepmother.””
Daniel stood.
“Then who was it?””
Ethan hesitated.
“Sir…”
“What?””
“The access code belonged to someone who should not have been able to enter the system.””
Daniel gripped the phone.
“Whose code?””
Ethan’s voice became quiet.
“Your late wife’s.””
Daniel froze.
Rachel.
Impossible.
She had been dead for four years.
But before he could respond, Ethan continued.
“Sir, there’s something else.””
“What?””
“The basement footage shows your wife, Victoria…”
Daniel held his breath.
“…meeting someone the night before Rachel died.””
The phone slipped slightly in Daniel’s hand.
Because suddenly, the story he had believed for four years began falling apart.

And the person standing at the center of it all…
was the woman sleeping upstairs in his house.
