Chapter 8: The Locked Archive

The alarm shattered the room.

Red lights flashed in the hallway.

Somewhere downstairs, chairs scraped across the floor as frightened guests began moving toward the exits.

Sofia grabbed the edge of the desk.

"We have to get everyone outside.""

Richard didn't move.

Neither did Graham.

I looked at Sofia.

"You said you were there the night Thomas died.""

She swallowed.

"I was.""

"Doing what?""

"I wasn't working here.""

"Then where?""

She looked at Richard.

He shook his head once.

"Don't.""

I stepped closer.

"You don't get to tell her what to say.""

Sofia's eyes filled with tears.

"I was working at St. Vincent's.""

My heart stopped.

The hospital.

Adam's birth.

Thomas.

The nurse.

Everything was suddenly connected.

"You were the nurse.""

She nodded.

"Yes.""

Adam stared at her.

"You saved me.""

Sofia shook her head.

"I tried.""

"What happened?""

She looked toward the hallway.

"We don't have time.""

The alarm continued screaming.

I grabbed her hand.

"Make time.""

She looked at me.

"Thomas came to the hospital because Claire's baby had been declared dead.""

Adam whispered, "I wasn't dead.""

"No.""

She shook her head.

"You were alive.""

I felt tears burn my eyes.

"What happened?""

Sofia looked at Richard.

"He came to the maternity ward.""

Richard's face remained expressionless.

"He told me the baby was being transferred.""

"Transferred where?""

"I didn't know.""

"What did you discover?""

Sofia swallowed.

"Your baby's wristband had been switched.""

Adam's face went white.

"With whose?""

She hesitated.

"Another infant.""

I felt sick.

"Why?""

"To create a false record.""

Richard suddenly moved toward her.

"You've said enough.""

Adam stepped in front of him.

"Don't touch her.""

Richard stopped.

Sofia continued.

"I realized the baby's medical chart had been altered.""

"By whom?""

She looked at Richard.

"He had access.""

Richard laughed.

"That's absurd.""

Sofia pointed at him.

"You came into the ward that night.""

"I represented Claire.""

"You weren't supposed to be there.""

"I was her attorney.""

"You weren't acting as her attorney.""

Richard's face hardened.

"What did you see?""

Sofia looked at me.

"I saw you carrying a folder.""

Richard said nothing.

"You gave it to a nurse.""

"What nurse?""

Sofia's voice trembled.

"Evelyn Whitmore.""

My stomach dropped.

"Thomas's sister?""

"Yes.""

Adam looked stunned.

"Why?""

Sofia shook her head.

"I don't know.""

The alarm suddenly stopped.

Silence rushed into the building.

Then the lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

The restaurant went dark.

Someone screamed downstairs.

I reached for Adam.

"Stay with me.""

"I'm here.""

A few seconds later, emergency lights came on.

Sofia grabbed a flashlight.

"The archive.""

I understood.

"Someone triggered the alarm to clear the restaurant.""

Richard smiled.

"You're learning.""

I turned toward him.

"You did this.""

"No.""

He pointed toward the hallway.

"Someone else did.""

Then we heard footsteps.

Running.

From the basement.

Graham whispered, "Oh God.""

I looked at him.

"What?""

"The archive.""

We ran.

Sofia unlocked a metal door near the kitchen.

A narrow staircase descended beneath the restaurant.

The air became colder with every step.

At the bottom was a hallway lined with old wine racks and storage rooms.

At the end stood a steel door.

Sofia pulled out a key.

Richard appeared behind us.

"Don't.""

I turned.

"You're not coming in.""

"That archive belongs to Bellavita.""

"So do I.""

He stared at me.

"You don't know what you're opening.""

"Neither do you.""

I inserted the key.

The lock clicked.

The door opened.

Inside were shelves of boxes.

Old ledgers.

Contracts.

Photographs.

Bank records.

Everything Thomas had preserved.

I walked inside.

Adam followed.

Sofia went directly to a shelf.

"Thomas's private archive should be here.""

She pointed.

"Section W.""

We searched.

Box after box.

Then Adam stopped.

"Mom.""

He held up a wooden box.

On the lid was a handwritten word.

*WHITMORE.*

I took it.

It was locked.

Sofia pointed to a small drawer.

"Try that.""

Inside was a key.

I inserted it.

The box opened.

Inside was a photograph.

I picked it up.

It showed Thomas standing outside St. Vincent's Hospital.

He was holding a newborn.

Beside him stood Evelyn.

And beside Evelyn stood Claire.

Alive.

I stared at the photograph.

The date on the back was twenty-six years ago.

Three days after Adam's birth.

"Claire was alive.""

Adam stared at the picture.

"She saw me.""

"Yes.""

I turned the photograph over.

There was another note.

This is the last photograph before she disappeared.

Beneath it was another envelope.

I opened it.

A legal document fell out.

The heading read:

*Emergency Custody and Beneficiary Protection Agreement.*

I scanned it.

Then I stopped.

"Adam.""

"What?""

"This says Claire didn't surrender you.""

"What does it say?""

I read the relevant paragraph.

"She appointed Thomas and me as your legal guardians.""

Adam closed his eyes.

"So she chose you.""

"Yes.""

He looked at me.

"She wanted me to have you.""

I nodded.

He hugged me.

For the first time in years, my son felt like my little boy again.

I held him tightly.

Then something caught my eye.

A second page had been folded behind the agreement.

I pulled it out.

It was a handwritten statement from Evelyn.

Thomas, I did what you asked.

But Richard knows about the child.

He says he will expose Claire unless you give him the controlling shares.

My blood ran cold.

I looked at Adam.

"This was all about Bellavita.""

Sofia shook her head.

"No.""

She pointed to the next paragraph.

I read aloud.

"Richard doesn't want the shares. He wants the evidence stored beneath them.""

I frowned.

"Stored beneath them?""

Adam looked around.

"What does that mean?""

Sofia moved toward the back wall.

"Wait.""

She ran her fingers across the old shelving.

Then she stopped.

"There.""

A section of the wall sounded hollow.

She looked at me.

"There's a compartment.""

Richard appeared in the doorway.

"Step away.""

I turned.

He was holding something.

A gun.

Adam moved in front of me.

Richard raised it slightly.

"Don't.""

Sofia froze.

Graham came down the stairs behind him.

"Richard.""

"Stay where you are.""

I looked at the gun.

Then at Richard.

"You've lost.""

He smiled.

"Not yet.""

He pointed toward the wall.

"Open it.""

I shook my head.

"Why?""

"Because Thomas put something inside that belongs to me.""

"No.""

Richard's voice sharpened.

"Open it.""

I looked at Adam.

Then at Sofia.

And finally at the wall.

There was no way around it.

I pressed the hidden latch.

A section of stone shifted.

Inside was a black metal case.

Richard's breathing changed.

"There.""

I pulled it out.

He reached for it.

I held it back.

"What is it?""

"Give it to me.""

"No.""

He stepped closer.

"Margaret.""

I opened the case.

Inside was a stack of documents.

A flash drive.

And one sealed envelope.

The envelope had Thomas's handwriting.

But this time, the name on it wasn't mine.

It said:

*To the person who finally exposes Richard Hale.*

Richard's face went white.

I looked at him.

"You knew this was here.""

He said nothing.

I opened the envelope.

Inside was one sentence.

Richard will tell you the shares are the motive.

They are not.

My eyes moved to the next line.

The real motive is the child.

Adam whispered, "Me?""

I read further.

If Richard has found this archive, then he knows the truth about Claire.

But he still doesn't know the truth about Adam.

I looked at my son.

"What truth?""

Before I could continue, the basement door slammed shut.

May you like

The lights went out again.

And when the emergency lights returned, the black metal case was gone.
