Chapter 5: The Woman Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

I didn't realize I had stopped breathing until Sofia said my name again.

"Mrs. Whitmore?""

I looked at her.

"Say that again.""

"The woman listed as Claire Bennett is alive.""

Adam gripped the back of a chair.

"That's impossible.""

Sofia shook her head.

"That's what our records show.""

I felt dizzy.

"Who called you?""

"Someone from our legal department.""

"How did they know?""

"Because the request triggered an old account alert.""

Graham suddenly stepped forward.

"That's enough.""

I turned.

His face had changed completely.

The confident man who had walked into Bellavita expecting an extravagant family celebration was gone.

He looked frightened.

Not embarrassed.

Frightened.

I noticed Adam watching him.

"You know her.""

Graham shook his head.

"I don't.""

"You're lying.""

Vanessa grabbed his arm.

"Dad.""

He pulled away.

"Don't.""

Adam stared at his father-in-law.

"You know Claire Bennett?""

Graham said nothing.

Adam's voice rose.

"Do you know my biological mother?""

Graham finally looked at him.

"I know of her.""

I stepped closer.

"How?""

He swallowed.

"Through business.""

"What business?""

"Twenty-six years ago.""

He paused.

"There was an investment company.""

Sofia closed the office door.

Graham continued.

"Bellavita wasn't the restaurant it is now. It was smaller. There were financial problems.""

I stared at him.

"I know.""

"No," he said.

"You don't.""

His voice had become quiet.

"Thomas was trying to keep it alive.""

I remembered that period.

The late nights.

The paperwork.

Thomas coming home exhausted.

I'd thought he was simply working too much.

Graham rubbed his forehead.

"There was an investor named Claire Bennett.""

My heart hammered.

"Why was she involved?""

"She wasn't just an investor.""

He looked at Adam.

"She was the person who originally financed the expansion.""

Adam's face tightened.

"Why have I never heard of her?""

"Because Thomas made sure you didn't.""

I stared at Graham.

"What happened?""

Graham looked toward the window.

"Claire became pregnant.""

Nobody spoke.

Adam whispered, "With me?""

Graham nodded.

"Yes.""

The room went silent.

I felt my knees weaken.

I sat down.

Adam remained standing.

"Then why did Mom raise me?""

Graham looked at me.

"Because Claire disappeared.""

"When?""

"After the birth.""

"Why?""

He hesitated.

"Because she believed someone was trying to kill her.""

Adam's face went pale.

"Who?""

Graham didn't answer.

I did.

"Thomas?""

"No.""

He shook his head.

"Thomas was trying to protect her.""

I closed my eyes.

Everything I'd believed about my marriage seemed to be shifting beneath my feet.

Thomas had never betrayed me.

He had hidden things.

Huge things.

But maybe every secret had been designed to protect me.

Adam sat down.

"So Claire left me?""

Graham shook his head.

"She thought she was saving you.""

"From whom?""

Graham looked at Vanessa.

She was crying.

I noticed it immediately.

"Why are you crying?""

She wiped her cheek.

"I'm overwhelmed.""

"No.""

I stood.

"You're not overwhelmed.""

She looked at me.

"You're scared.""

She said nothing.

I stepped closer.

"Why?""

Graham suddenly said, "Vanessa had nothing to do with this.""

Adam looked at him.

"What does that mean?""

"It means exactly what I said.""

Vanessa whispered, "Dad, stop.""

I looked between them.

Then I understood something.

This wasn't just about Adam.

It wasn't just about thirty-eight thousand dollars.

The Prices knew something.

And whatever they knew was important enough to make them risk forging my signature.

I turned to Sofia.

"Can you pull every document connected to the Founder's Reserve?""

"How far back?""

"Twenty-six years.""

She nodded.

"That may take some time.""

"Take it.""

Graham shook his head.

"You don't know what you're doing.""

I looked at him.

"I know my son tried to use my money.""

"That's not the whole story.""

"Then tell me the rest.""

He looked at Adam.

"You deserve to know.""

Adam stood.

"Tell me.""

Graham took a breath.

"Your father believed Claire had hidden something.""

"What?""

"Ownership documents.""

I looked at Sofia.

She was already searching.

Graham continued.

"Before Claire disappeared, she transferred something into a private trust.""

"What?""

"Her interest in Bellavita.""

My stomach dropped.

"The restaurant?""

"Part of it.""

Sofia suddenly looked up.

"Mrs. Whitmore.""

"What?""

"I found something.""

She printed a document.

I walked toward her.

It was an old ownership schedule.

There were several names.

Thomas Whitmore.

Margaret Whitmore.

Evelyn Whitmore.

And one more.

Claire Bennett.

I stared at the percentages.

Then I saw something that made no sense.

Claire's interest had been transferred.

But not to Thomas.

Not to Evelyn.

Not even to Adam.

It had been transferred to me.

"Why?""

Graham closed his eyes.

"Because Claire trusted Thomas.""

I looked at him.

"She transferred her ownership to me?""

"Yes.""

"Why?""

"Because she believed you were the only person who would never use Adam as leverage.""

Adam stared at the document.

"So Mom has always owned part of Bellavita?""

Sofia nodded.

"More than part.""

She clicked another screen.

"Mrs. Whitmore, your Founder's Reserve account isn't simply connected to the restaurant.""

"What is it?""

"You control the voting shares.""

I looked at her.

"How much?""

Sofia hesitated.

"Fifty-one percent.""

Nobody spoke.

I slowly turned toward Adam.

He stared at me.

"You control Bellavita?""

"I didn't know.""

Sofia nodded.

"Thomas kept the ownership structure private.""

Graham laughed bitterly.

"Of course he did.""

I looked at him.

"What does that mean?""

"It means Adam wasn't trying to steal thirty-eight thousand dollars.""

I stared at him.

"He was trying to activate an inheritance.""

"Using your membership.""

"But why?""

Graham looked at Adam.

"Because someone told him the trust would remain inaccessible unless he demonstrated control over the family shares.""

Adam's face went pale.

"Who told me?""

Graham didn't answer.

Vanessa whispered, "Dad.""

I turned toward her.

"Who?""

She looked at me.

"I don't know.""

I stepped closer.

"You've known about this for weeks.""

"No.""

"You knew about the reception.""

"Yes.""

"You knew Adam expected to use my account.""

"Yes.""

"You knew about Claire.""

She hesitated.

"Not everything.""

"What did you know?""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"That someone was contacting Adam.""

"Who?""

"I don't know.""

"Vanessa.""

She shook her head.

"I swear.""

Adam looked at his wife.

"You told me Dad's trust required the restaurant authorization.""

"I told you what I was told.""

"By whom?""

She didn't answer.

Adam stepped toward her.

"Vanessa.""

She broke.

"It was a lawyer.""

"What lawyer?""

"I don't know.""

"You met him?""

"Once.""

"Where?""

She looked at me.

"At the hotel.""

"What hotel?""

She swallowed.

"The Fairmont.""

I knew the place.

"Who was there?""

"Me. Adam. And a man named Richard.""

Adam frowned.

"Richard what?""

Vanessa shook her head.

"I don't know.""

Graham suddenly said, "Richard Hale.""

I turned toward him.

"You know him?""

Graham nodded.

"He used to represent Claire.""

Sofia stopped typing.

"Richard Hale is listed on one of the old Bellavita trust documents.""

I felt the room closing around me.

Then the printer began to run.

Sofia pulled out another page.

She read it silently.

Her face drained of color.

"What?""

She looked at me.

"This is a transfer agreement.""

"Between whom?""

She handed it to me.

The agreement was dated twenty-six years ago.

Claire Bennett had transferred her remaining interest into a trust.

The beneficiary was listed as:

*Adam Whitmore.*

I looked at my son.

He stared back.

"But there's a condition," Sofia said.

I looked at the bottom.

The condition was handwritten.

Beneficiary must reach age forty.

Adam's face went blank.

"Why forty?""

Sofia shook her head.

"I don't know.""

I looked at the date.

Adam was forty.

He had turned forty four months earlier.

Suddenly, his entire behavior made sense.

The inheritance had just become available.

But there was another line.

A handwritten note beneath the condition.

If Margaret Whitmore remains the controlling shareholder, the beneficiary may not access the trust without her authorization.

I looked at Adam.

He whispered, "That's why.""

"What?""

"That's why I needed your account.""

"You could have asked me.""

"I thought you'd say no.""

I stared at him.

"Would you have asked me?""

He didn't answer.

That was answer enough.

Then Sofia's computer chimed again.

She looked at the screen.

"There's a message.""

"From who?""

She read it.

"Richard Hale.""

I felt every hair on my arms rise.

"What does it say?""

Sofia looked at Adam.

Then at me.

"It says, 'Tell Adam to leave Bellavita immediately. His mother has discovered the wrong part of the truth.''"

Adam's face went white.

I stepped toward the computer.

"Can you reply?""

"Yes.""

"Ask him what the right part is.""

Sofia typed.

A response appeared almost immediately.

*Don't ask me. Ask Margaret what happened the night Adam was born.*

I stared at the screen.

Adam slowly turned toward me.

"Mom?""

I couldn't answer.

Because I remembered something.

A hospital room.

A baby crying.

Thomas standing beside my bed.

And a nurse saying one sentence I had forgotten for twenty-six years.

Mrs. Whitmore, there's something we need to tell you about the baby's blood type.

I had never understood why Thomas had pulled the nurse aside.

Now I knew.

Or at least, I thought I did.

I turned toward Sofia.

"Call the legal department.""

"Why?""

"Tell them to prepare every document connected to Claire Bennett.""

Then I looked at Adam.

"And find me her current address.""

He stared at me.

"You're going to meet her?""

I nodded.

"If she's alive, I'm going to ask her why she gave you to us.""

Before anyone could respond, Sofia's phone rang again.

She answered.

Her expression changed.

She looked directly at me.

"Mrs. Whitmore...""

"What now?""

"The caller says she's Claire Bennett.""

Adam stood.

Sofia put the phone on speaker.

For several seconds, there was only breathing.

Then a woman's voice came through.

Older.

Shaky.

But unmistakably frightened.

"Margaret?""

My hand tightened around the edge of the desk.

"Yes.""

A pause.

Then the woman whispered:

"I'm sorry.""

I closed my eyes.

"Why?""

May you like

Her voice broke.

"Because Thomas never told you the truth about who was holding your baby that night.""
