Chapter 7: Richard Hale
The door opened before anyone could reach it.
Richard Hale stood in the doorway wearing a charcoal suit, a pale blue tie, and the calm expression of a man who had spent decades walking into rooms where other people were afraid of him.
He looked older than I remembered.
Then I realized something.
I had never actually met him.
I'd seen his name on Thomas's paperwork. I'd heard my husband mention him once or twice. But Thomas had always spoken about his attorney as though Richard were simply another professional behind a desk.
Now I understood why he'd never brought him home.
Richard's eyes moved around the room.
First to Sofia.
Then Graham.
Then Vanessa.
Finally, he looked at Adam.
And when his gaze reached me, he smiled.
"Margaret.""
I didn't return it.
"You're trespassing.""
He chuckled.
"I own a key.""
"That doesn't give you permission to enter my office.""
"This isn't your office.""
I stepped toward him.
"It is tonight.""
His smile disappeared.
Behind me, Adam whispered, "Is this the man?""
I nodded.
Richard looked at him.
"Your father told you nothing useful, did he?""
Adam moved forward.
"You threatened my wife.""
Richard's eyebrows lifted.
"Vanessa?""
She backed away from him.
"Don't come near me.""
He laughed softly.
"After everything I've done for your family?""
I turned toward Vanessa.
"What did he do?""
She shook her head.
"I don't know.""
Richard interrupted.
"She knows enough.""
"Then you won't mind if she tells us.""
He looked at me.
"Still controlling every room you enter.""
"Still avoiding every question?""
His jaw tightened.
I held up Thomas's letter.
"You knew about Claire.""
"I knew many things.""
"You knew she was alive.""
"I suspected.""
"You knew Adam was her son.""
"Yes.""
Adam stepped toward him.
"And you knew I was being manipulated.""
Richard looked at him without emotion.
"I gave you an opportunity.""
"You told me to take my mother's money.""
"I told you to claim what your father intended for you.""
"You gave me forged documents.""
Richard's expression hardened.
"Careful.""
Sofia stepped between them.
"Mr. Hale, you're on private property.""
Richard glanced at her.
"I've represented Bellavita for twenty-eight years.""
"And you're no longer authorized to access its records.""
His eyes narrowed.
"Who told you that?""
I answered.
"I did.""
Richard laughed.
"You still don't understand.""
"Then explain it.""
He stepped inside and closed the door behind him.
"Thomas wasn't protecting you from me.""
He looked directly into my eyes.
"He was protecting you from what you would discover about him.""
I felt a chill.
"Don't use my husband's name to frighten me.""
"Why not?""
"Because he isn't here to defend himself.""
"Exactly.""
Richard placed a leather folder on the table.
"You've spent seven years believing Thomas was a saint.""
I didn't move.
"He wasn't.""
Adam looked at me.
"Mom...""
Richard opened the folder.
Inside were bank statements.
Hospital records.
Correspondence.
Photographs.
Twenty-six years of secrets arranged in neat chronological order.
"Your husband took control of Bellavita through deception," Richard said.
I stared at him.
"That's a lie.""
"Is it?""
He slid a document toward me.
It showed a transfer from Claire Bennett's account to Thomas.
I read the amount.
Then another.
Then another.
"These are legitimate transfers," I said.
"Yes.""
"For Claire's investment.""
"No.""
Richard leaned closer.
"They were payments.""
"For what?""
"Silence.""
The word landed like a stone.
Adam stared at him.
"Whose silence?""
Richard looked at me.
"Claire's.""
I shook my head.
"Why would Thomas pay her?""
"Because Claire knew where Adam came from.""
"I already know.""
Richard smiled.
"No, Margaret.""
He tapped the folder.
"You know the version Thomas wanted you to know.""
I looked at Sofia.
She was already photographing the documents.
Richard noticed.
"That won't help you.""
"It will help my attorney.""
His smile faded.
I reached for another document.
It was a hospital record.
The patient's name had been altered.
But beneath the blacked-out section, I could see a second name.
*Margaret Whitmore.*
My heart stopped.
"What is this?""
Richard leaned back.
"The original birth record.""
Adam stepped closer.
I covered the page with my hand.
"No.""
Richard said nothing.
I looked at him.
"You're lying.""
"Read the next page.""
I did.
The record stated that a woman named Claire Bennett had delivered a premature male infant.
The infant was alive.
Healthy enough to survive.
But there was another notation.
*Temporary maternal transfer authorized.*
I looked at Richard.
"What does that mean?""
"It means Thomas arranged for you to take custody.""
"I was told the baby was abandoned.""
"He wasn't.""
Adam whispered, "Mom...""
I looked at him.
"I didn't know.""
Richard nodded.
"That's the one thing about you I believe.""
He slid another document across the table.
A custody agreement.
Thomas's signature.
Claire's signature.
And mine.
Except I hadn't signed it.
My stomach turned.
"I never signed this.""
"No.""
Richard pointed at the bottom.
"That's not your signature.""
I looked closer.
The signature belonged to someone else.
Evelyn.
I looked at Adam.
"Your aunt signed for me?""
Richard nodded.
"Thomas arranged everything.""
"Why?""
"Because Claire wanted you to raise him.""
I stared at him.
"Why would she want that?""
Richard leaned back.
"Because Claire knew she wouldn't survive.""
"From whom?""
He didn't answer.
I slammed my hand on the desk.
"Who was trying to kill her?""
Richard looked at Graham.
Graham's face was gray.
Then Richard said quietly, "Her own father.""
I froze.
Adam looked confused.
"Claire's father?""
Richard nodded.
"He wanted control of her investment.""
Graham suddenly spoke.
"And Richard helped him.""
Richard's head snapped toward him.
"You should be careful, Graham.""
Graham stood.
"No.""
His voice shook, but he didn't back down.
"I've been careful for twenty-six years.""
Richard stared at him.
"You betrayed us.""
"I betrayed you.""
"Same thing.""
Graham looked at me.
"I was the accountant who found the missing money.""
"I know.""
"No.""
He shook his head.
"You don't.""
He took a breath.
"I found evidence that Claire's father was moving money through shell companies.""
Richard interrupted.
"And you accepted money to stay quiet.""
Graham looked ashamed.
"Yes.""
Vanessa began crying.
"Dad...""
"I was afraid," he said.
Richard smiled.
"Fear makes people practical.""
I turned toward him.
"You manipulated Adam.""
"I gave him information.""
"You lied to him.""
"I told him enough truth to make him act.""
Adam's fists clenched.
"You knew I would try to access the trust.""
"Of course.""
"You knew my mother would stop me.""
Richard looked at me.
"That was the point.""
My pulse quickened.
"What?""
Richard closed the folder.
"I needed you to activate the account.""
"Why?""
"Because the trust couldn't be challenged while you remained passive.""
I stared at him.
"You wanted me to discover it.""
"Exactly.""
The room went silent.
Richard leaned forward.
"The thirty-eight thousand dollars was bait.""
Adam looked horrified.
"What?""
Richard turned toward him.
"You were never supposed to get the money.""
"Then what was I supposed to do?""
"Force Margaret to open the account.""
I felt cold.
"You needed my authorization.""
"Yes.""
"To access what?""
Richard smiled.
"The original ownership documents.""
Sofia stiffened.
"The archive.""
Richard nodded.
"Thomas hid them inside Bellavita.""
I looked around the office.
"Where?""
Richard didn't answer.
I stepped toward him.
"You don't know.""
His expression changed.
"Don't test me.""
"If you knew, you'd already have them.""
His jaw tightened.
That was enough.
He didn't know.
I turned to Sofia.
"Where is the original archive?""
She looked uncertain.
"The old founder's records?""
"Yes.""
"Basement.""
Richard's face changed.
I smiled for the first time.
"Thank you.""
I turned toward the door.
Richard stepped in front of me.
"You're not going downstairs.""
"Move.""
"No.""
Adam stepped beside me.
"Get out of her way.""
Richard looked at him.
"You still think this is about inheritance.""
Adam's voice was steady.
"What is it about?""
Richard leaned close.
"Your father left something in that archive that could put several people in prison.""
Graham closed his eyes.
I looked at him.
"Several people?""
He nodded.
"Yes.""
Richard's voice dropped.
"And one of them is standing in this room.""
Everyone turned toward Graham.
Graham's face collapsed.
Vanessa whispered, "Dad?""
I looked at Richard.
"Who?""
He didn't answer.
Instead, he looked at Sofia.
"Ask her.""
I frowned.
"Ask Sofia what?""
Sofia stepped backward.
Richard smiled.
"Ask your manager what she was doing the night Thomas died.""
I looked at Sofia.
She had gone pale.
"Is that true?""
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Adam looked at her.
"Sofia?""
Finally, she whispered:
May you like
"I was there.""
And before anyone could ask why, the fire alarm began screaming throughout Bellavita.
