Chapter 9: The Truth Buried At Birth
The signature stared back at me.
*Daniel Parker.*
For years, I had looked at Maya’s birth certificate dozens of times.
I had framed a copy.
I had kept another in our family documents.
I had never once looked closely at the signature.
Why would I?
I trusted Claire.
I trusted the life we built.
I trusted the people standing beside me.
And now the person I trusted most had been hiding the name of the person who betrayed me.
The man who claimed to be my best friend.
The man who was there the day my daughter was born.
“Marcus?””
Rachel’s voice pulled me back.
I looked at her.
“What is this?””
She swallowed.
“The original record.””
“No.””
My voice came out low.
“This can’t be right.””
“I know what it looks like.””
“You don’t understand.””
Rachel looked at me sadly.
“I do.””
“No, you don’t.””
I held up the paper.
“I was there.””
The words surprised even me.
“I was there when Maya was born.””
Rachel nodded.
“I know.””
“I held her.””
“I know.””
“I cut the cord.””
“I know.””
My hands shook.
“I looked at Claire and she told me she had given me the greatest gift of my life.””
Rachel’s expression softened.
“She probably believed that.””
I looked at her sharply.
“Probably?””
She looked away.
“Marcus…”
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“Don’t give me careful answers anymore.””
She nodded.
“You deserve the truth.””
“Then tell me.””
Rachel took a deep breath.
“Daniel was the doctor on call that night.””
“I know.””
“But he was also the person Claire called before she called you.””
I froze.
“What?””
Rachel looked at the floor.
“Claire was scared.””
“About what?””
“The delivery.””
“That’s normal.””
“Not like that.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What are you saying?””
Rachel opened the folder.
She pulled out another document.
“This was an internal hospital report.””
I read the first line.
*Unauthorized alteration of patient records.*
My heart dropped.
“Where did you get this?””
“Daniel kept copies.””
“Why?””
“Because he thought he could use them later.””
I looked at the report.
The words blurred.
“What was altered?””
Rachel hesitated.
“The original blood type information.””
I looked up.
“Blood type?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“To hide something.””
My chest tightened.
“What?””
Rachel looked toward Maya’s room.
Then whispered:
“The hospital records originally showed a discrepancy.””
I waited.
“What discrepancy?””
“The baby’s blood type didn’t match the one listed under you.””
I stared at her.
“That proves nothing.””
“No.””
Rachel nodded.
“It doesn’t.””
“Then why are we here?””
“Because Daniel didn’t just change the record.””
She pointed at another page.
“He removed the original test results.””
My stomach turned.
“And replaced them?””
“Yes.””
“With what?””
“A report that suggested everything matched.””
I felt numb.
The room around me became distant.
“So Daniel changed medical records.””
“Yes.””
“And Claire knew.””
Rachel didn’t answer.
She didn’t need to.
I closed my eyes.
The truth hurt more when it arrived quietly.
Not like an explosion.
Like a crack spreading through glass.
“Why would Claire let him?””
Rachel’s voice softened.
“Because she was afraid.””
“Of what?””
“Of losing Maya.””
I shook my head.
“She was never going to lose Maya.””
“You don’t know that.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
Rachel sighed.
“Marcus, before Maya was born, Claire and Daniel were closer than you knew.””
My jaw tightened.
“I know about the kiss.””
Rachel looked surprised.
“The kiss?””
I ignored the question.
“Keep going.””
She nodded.
“Claire and Daniel had a history.””
“How far back?””
“Before you met Claire.””
I felt sick.
“But she chose me.””
“Yes.””
“Then why?””
“Because Daniel wasn’t someone she wanted to build a life with.””
I laughed bitterly.
“So she chose me as a backup?””
“No.””
Rachel shook her head.
“She chose you because she loved you.””
The words almost made me angry.
“Loved me?””
“Yes.””
“People don’t love someone and do this.””
Rachel looked at me.
“Sometimes people panic so badly they destroy the thing they’re trying to protect.””
I thought about that.
About Claire.
About her fear.
About her lies.
About Maya.
I wanted to hate her.
It would have been easier.
But love doesn’t disappear just because someone hurts you.
It just becomes something painful to carry.
“Where is Daniel?””
Rachel looked nervous.
“I don’t know.””
“You’re lying.””
“I’m not.””
“You know more than you’re telling me.””
She looked away.
That was enough.
“Rachel.””
She sighed.
“He contacted me yesterday.””
“What did he say?””
“He wanted me to destroy the files.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Why didn’t you?””
“Because I saw what was happening to Maya.””
She looked toward the room.
“And I couldn’t keep helping adults hurt a child.””
I nodded slowly.
“Where is he?””
Rachel reached into her bag.
She pulled out a small envelope.
“He gave me this.””
I opened it.
Inside was a key.
A handwritten address.
And a note.
Three words.
*Come alone, Marcus.*
My stomach tightened.
“When did he give you this?””
“Before everything happened.””
“What everything?””
Rachel hesitated.
“Before he disappeared.””
I looked at the key.
“He wants to meet me.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“I don’t know.””
I stared at the note.
But deep down, I knew.
Daniel wasn’t running.
He was waiting.
The question was why.
I returned to Maya’s room.
She looked at me immediately.
“Is everything okay?””
I forced myself to smile.
“Yes.””
It was a lie.
But this time, it was different.
I wasn’t lying to hide something from her.
I was lying to protect her from something too heavy.
I sat beside her.
“Are you tired?””
She nodded.
“Can we go home?””
I looked at the hospital room.
The place where everything changed.
“Yeah.””
We packed slowly.
The backpack was still on the chair.
I picked it up.
Maya watched.
“Are you keeping it?””
I looked at her.
“Yes.””
“Even though it caused trouble?””
I knelt down.
“Maya, this backpack didn’t cause trouble.””
“Then what did?””
I looked at her.
“The secrets inside it.””
She thought about that.
Then asked:
“Are secrets always bad?””
I paused.
“No.””
“Then how do you know?””
I smiled sadly.
“Because good secrets make people happy.””
“And bad ones?””
“They make people afraid.””
She nodded.
Like she understood.
Before we left, my phone buzzed.
A message.
From Daniel.
I opened it.
Only one sentence.
*You finally know why Claire was afraid.*
Then another message appeared.
A photo.
My blood froze.
It was a picture from the night Maya was born.
Claire was sitting in the hospital bed.
Holding baby Maya.
Daniel stood beside her.
But that wasn’t what made me stop.
It was the writing underneath.
A note.
Apparently written by Daniel.
*You were never supposed to be the father.*
My hands shook.
Then another message arrived.
*Meet me if you want the real answer.*
I stared at the address.
The same one on the note.
Then Daniel sent one final message.
*Bring the DNA report. Don’t bring Claire.*
I looked at Maya.
Then at the phone.
Because suddenly I understood something.
The DNA test wasn’t the secret.
It was the weapon.
Daniel didn’t want me to know whether Maya was my daughter.
He wanted me to doubt it.
And doubt was the one thing that could destroy a family without leaving any evidence behind.
I put the phone away.
But before I could leave, Maya reached into her backpack.
“Daddy?””
“Yes?””
She pulled out a small folded paper.
“I forgot about this.””
I took it.
“What is it?””
“I found it behind the phone.””
My heart tightened.
I unfolded it.
Three words were written on the page.
Not by Claire.
Not by Daniel.
By someone else.
Someone who had been watching.
*She knows everything.*
I looked at Maya.
“What does this mean?””
She shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A woman whispered:
“Marcus, don’t go to Daniel.””
My body went still.
“Who is this?””
The woman took a shaky breath.
“Someone who knows the truth about Maya’s birth.””
“Who?””
Silence.
Then:
“I’m Claire’s mother.””
My heart stopped.
“Why are you calling me?””
Her voice broke.
“Because Daniel isn’t the only one who lied to you.””
I looked at the folded paper.
At the message.
At my daughter.
And then she said the words that changed everything:
“Marcus… Maya is your daughter.””
May you like
A pause.
“But Claire isn’t the person who changed the DNA records.””
