Chapter 7: The Recording Hidden For Six Months
The words echoed in my mind.
*She didn’t fall.*
I couldn’t speak.
I couldn’t even breathe.
For six months, I had lived with one version of the story.
Maya had slipped.
Maya had been careless.
Maya had been running down the stairs after being told not to.
That was what Claire said.
That was what I believed.
Because why wouldn’t I?
I was her father.
I was supposed to protect her.
And yet somehow, I had believed the person who needed protecting from.
“Marcus?””
Rachel’s voice pulled me back.
“Are you still there?””
I looked at Maya.
She was watching me.
Waiting.
I turned slightly away.
“Yes.””
“Listen to me carefully.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“Who are you?””
“I told you. I worked with Claire.””
“That doesn’t answer my question.””
A pause.
Then she said:
“I was Claire’s assistant.””
“Assistant?””
“Yes.””
“At her company?””
“Yes.””
I tried to process it.
The Claire I knew worked in marketing.
She managed campaigns.
She attended meetings.
She complained about deadlines.
She didn’t sound like someone who planned things.
But the evidence in front of me was telling a different story.
“How do you know about the stairs?””
Rachel hesitated.
“Because I helped her cover it up.””
The confession hit me harder than I expected.
“What?””
“I didn’t hurt Maya.””
“Then what did you do?””
Her voice became smaller.
“I deleted the messages.””
My stomach turned.
“What messages?””
“The ones Claire sent after it happened.””
“Why?””
“Because she told me you would take Maya away from her.””
I stared at the hospital floor.
The world suddenly felt upside down.
Everyone who claimed to be protecting my daughter had been protecting themselves.
“Rachel.””
“Yes?””
“I need the truth.””
“I know.””
“No more pieces. No more half answers.””
“I understand.””
“Tell me everything.””
There was a long silence.
Then Rachel began.
“It happened six months ago. Claire and Daniel had been arguing.””
My eyes moved to the phone.
“About what?””
“About you.””
My jaw tightened.
“Why?””
“Because Daniel wanted Claire to leave you.””
I looked at Maya.
“Leave me?””
“Yes.””
“And she refused?””
Rachel gave a bitter laugh.
“No.””
The answer chilled me.
“She didn’t refuse.””
I closed my eyes.
“Then what?””
“She said she couldn’t leave until everything was prepared.””
Prepared.
That word again.
Like my marriage had been a project.
Like my family had been a problem to solve.
“What happened that night?””
Rachel continued.
“Claire and Daniel were in the house.””
“I know.””
“You don’t know everything.””
My heart sank.
“Keep going.””
“Maya overheard them arguing.””
I looked at my daughter.
She looked away.
“She wasn’t supposed to hear.””
“What were they arguing about?””
Rachel lowered her voice.
“Daniel wanted the phone.””
My fingers went cold.
“My phone?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because he knew you had recordings.””
I frowned.
“Recordings of what?””
“The truth.””
That wasn’t an answer.
It was a warning.
“What truth?””
Rachel exhaled.
“Marcus, Claire had been recording conversations between you and Maya.””
I froze.
“Why?””
“She said she needed proof.””
“Proof of what?””
“That you were unstable.””
The words barely made sense.
“My own wife was collecting evidence against me?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Rachel didn’t answer immediately.
Then:
“Because she wanted custody.””
I felt something break inside me.
Not anger.
Not even betrayal.
Something deeper.
Because custody meant she had already imagined a future where Maya and I were separated.
“Continue.””
“That night, Maya came downstairs.””
I remembered.
The video.
The hidden camera.
The fear.
“She heard them talking about the phone. She heard Daniel say they needed to get rid of anything that could expose them.””
“Expose what?””
“Everything.””
Rachel paused.
“Maya saw Daniel take your phone.””
My heart raced.
“Then what happened?””
“She tried to get it back.””
I looked at the backpack.
The phone.
The notebook.
Everything my daughter had been carrying.
“She grabbed it?””
“Yes.””
“And?””
Rachel’s voice shook.
“Claire chased after her.””
My breathing stopped.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“No.””
“Marcus…”
“No.””
I didn’t want to hear it.
But I needed to.
“What happened on the stairs?””
Rachel was quiet.
Too quiet.
Then:
“Maya pulled away.””
My hand covered my mouth.
“She wasn’t pushed?””
Rachel swallowed.
“Not intentionally.””
Not intentionally.
Those words were supposed to make it better.
They didn’t.
“What does that mean?””
“They were fighting over the phone.””
“Claire and Maya?””
“Yes.””
My knees felt weak.
“The phone slipped.””
“And?””
“Maya lost her balance.””
I closed my eyes.
The image appeared in my mind.
My little girl falling.
The sound.
The hospital.
Claire crying.
The explanation.
All of it.
A lie.
“What did Claire do?””
Rachel’s voice became barely audible.
“She waited.””
My blood ran cold.
“What?””
“She didn’t call you immediately.””
“How long?””
“Eight minutes.””
Eight minutes.
An eternity.
Eight minutes where my daughter was hurt.
Eight minutes where Claire could have helped.
Could have called.
Could have done anything.
“Why?””
“Because she was looking for the phone.””
I looked at Maya.
The room spun.
“My daughter was on the floor…”
“Yes.””
“And she was searching for a phone?””
“Yes.””
I ended the call.
Not because I didn’t want answers.
Because I couldn’t hear anymore.
I stood there silently.
Maya watched me.
“Daddy?””
I turned.
Her face was scared.
Not because of what I had learned.
Because she thought she had caused it.
I knelt beside her.
“Come here.””
She moved into my arms.
The second she touched me, she started crying.
“I’m sorry.””
The words broke me.
“Why are you sorry?””
“Because everyone is fighting because of me.””
I held her tighter.
“No.””
“But Mommy…”
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“Maya, listen to me.””
She looked up.
“None of this happened because of you.””
“But I took the phone.””
“No.””
“I did.””
“You found the truth.””
She cried harder.
“I didn’t want Mommy to be mad.””
I wiped her tears.
“I know.””
“Are you mad at me?””
The question destroyed me.
Because she wasn’t asking if I was angry.
She was asking if she was still loved.
“Never.””
I held her face gently.
“Never, ever.””
For a few minutes, we stayed like that.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message.
From Rachel.
One attachment.
A video file.
*The original recording.*
My heart started pounding.
I opened it.
The screen showed a date.
Six months ago.
The night of the fall.
I pressed play.
At first, there was only sound.
Footsteps.
Voices.
Claire.
Daniel.
Then Maya.
“Give Daddy’s phone back.””
My entire body went still.
The recording continued.
Daniel:
“You’re making this harder than it needs to be.””
Maya:
“Daddy will know.””
Claire:
“No, he won’t.””
A pause.
Then my daughter’s voice.
Small.
Afraid.
“But he always knows when you’re lying.””
The sound of movement.
A crash.
Then Claire screaming.
Not for help.
For the phone.
“Where is it?””
A second later.
Maya cried out.
The recording ended.
I sat frozen.
Because now I knew.
The worst part wasn’t that Claire lied.
The worst part wasn’t that she hid evidence.
The worst part wasn’t even that she betrayed me.
It was that my daughter had spent six months protecting the person who hurt her.
My phone rang.
This time, it wasn’t unknown.
It was Claire.
I answered.
Neither of us spoke.
Then she whispered:
“You listened to it, didn’t you?””
I looked at Maya.
“Yes.””
A long silence.
Then Claire said:
“Marcus, you need to understand something.””
“What?””
Her voice trembled.
“I wasn’t trying to hurt her.””
I closed my eyes.
“Then why did you leave her on the floor?””
Silence.
Real silence.
The kind that gave away the truth.
Finally, Claire whispered:
“Because Daniel told me if I didn’t fix the problem…”
I waited.
“…we would both lose everything.””
My blood ran cold.
“Daniel?””
“Yes.””
“Claire.””
“What?””
“You’re still protecting him.””
She said nothing.
And that was when I realized.
She wasn’t calling to apologize.
She wasn’t calling because she was sorry.
She was calling because she was afraid.
“Where are you?”” I asked.
No answer.
“Claire.””
A shaky breath.
Then:
“He has Maya’s original medical records.””
I froze.
“What?””
“He changed them.””
My heart stopped.
“Why?””
Her voice broke.
“Because the fall wasn’t the only thing he changed.””
I stood up slowly.
“What else?””
Claire whispered:
“Your daughter’s DNA test.””
The line went silent.
May you like
And then she said the words I never expected to hear.
“Marcus… Maya may not be your biological daughter.””
