Chapter 8: The Lie Bigger Than Betrayal
For a moment, I thought I had heard her wrong.
The hospital room disappeared.
The phone in my hand felt heavier than it should have.
Even Maya’s breathing seemed distant.
“What did you say?””
Claire didn’t answer.
“Claire.””
My voice sounded unfamiliar.
“What did you say?””
A shaky breath came through the speaker.
“I said Daniel has a DNA test.””
My heart pounded.
“That’s not what I asked.””
Silence.
Then:
“He says Maya isn’t yours.””
The words hit harder than anything else.
Not because they were impossible.
Because of the timing.
Because after everything I had discovered, there was a part of me that was already prepared to believe the worst.
But then I looked at Maya.
My daughter.
The little girl who reached for my hand when she was scared.
The little girl who saved my old phone because she thought it could save our family.
The little girl who called me Daddy before she even understood what that word meant.
Nothing changed in that moment.
Not even a possibility.
Not even a test.
Nothing.
“Maya is my daughter,” I said.
Claire was quiet.
“Marcus…”
“No.””
I stood.
“She is my daughter.””
“I know what she means to you.””
“No.””
My voice sharpened.
“You don’t.””
A pause.
“You don’t get to say that after everything.””
Claire started crying.
Not loudly.
Not dramatically.
Just a quiet sound of someone realizing the damage was bigger than she expected.
“I made mistakes.””
“Mistakes?””
I looked at Maya.
She was watching me.
Confused.
Afraid.
I turned away from her.
“You lied to me.””
“Yes.””
“You hid my phone.””
“Yes.””
“You let me believe Maya was hurt because of an accident.””
“Yes.””
“And now you’re telling me she might not be mine?””
Silence.
“That’s not a mistake, Claire.””
Her voice cracked.
“I was scared.””
“Of what?””
“Losing everything.””
I laughed bitterly.
“You destroyed everything trying not to lose it.””
Another silence.
Then I heard her whisper:
“Marcus, please.””
“No.””
“You need to understand what happened.””
“I need the truth.””
“Okay.””
For the first time that night, Claire sounded defeated.
“Six months ago, Daniel told me something.””
“What?””
“He said he had proof that Maya wasn’t biologically yours.””
I closed my eyes.
“And you believed him?””
“I didn’t know what to believe.””
“You could have asked me.””
“I was afraid.””
“Of me?””
“No.””
Her answer came quickly.
“Of what I would find out.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Claire didn’t answer.
“Claire.””
She took a breath.
“I wasn’t sure.””
The words cut deeper.
“You weren’t sure about me?””
“I wasn’t sure about anything.””
I looked at Maya.
“Did you ever think about what that would do to her?””
Claire started crying.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
My voice lowered.
“You don’t know what it feels like to watch your daughter be afraid to tell you the truth.””
She didn’t respond.
Because she couldn’t.
“Where is Daniel?””
“I don’t know.””
“You left with him.””
“I left because he had the records.””
I frowned.
“What records?””
“The original hospital paperwork.””
My stomach tightened.
“What does that mean?””
“When Maya was born, Daniel was there.””
I froze.
“What?””
“He was there because…”
She stopped.
“Because what?””
“Because he was helping me.””
The room became silent.
The only sound was the hospital monitor beside Maya.
Beep.
Beep.
Beep.
“Helping you with what?””
Claire’s voice became smaller.
“After Maya was born, there was a mistake.””
“A mistake?””
“Yes.””
“What kind?””
“I don’t know.””
“You don’t know?””
“I was exhausted. I was scared. There were papers everywhere.””
I stared at the floor.
This couldn’t be real.
My entire life had been built on conversations I never questioned.
Photos I never doubted.
Memories I thought belonged only to me.
“When did you find out about the test?””
“Two months ago.””
I looked up.
“Two months?””
“Yes.””
“And you said nothing?””
“I didn’t know if it was real.””
“So you decided to manipulate me?””
“No.””
“You did.””
My voice echoed through the room.
Maya looked at me.
I immediately softened.
“Sorry, sweetheart.””
She nodded.
But I could see the fear returning.
I sat beside her.
Claire continued.
“Daniel said he could prove it.””
“How?””
“He said there was a sample.””
“What sample?””
“A hospital record.””
I looked at the phone.
At all the files.
At all the secrets.
“What did he want?””
Claire was quiet.
Then:
“Control.””
The answer surprised me.
“What?””
“He didn’t care about Maya.””
My jaw tightened.
“Then why?””
“Because he wanted me to leave you.””
“Why?””
“He thought if he destroyed your trust in me, I would need him.””
I closed my eyes.
Daniel.
My best friend.
The man I trusted.
He wasn’t trying to steal my wife.
He was trying to destroy my family.
“Claire.””
“Yes?””
“Did you have an affair with him?””
Silence.
The silence was enough.
“Claire.””
“No.””
The answer came quickly.
“Not like that.””
I stared at the phone.
“Not like that?””
“We kissed.””
I felt something break.
“How many times?””
She didn’t answer.
“How many times?””
“Once.””
I laughed quietly.
A painful laugh.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“I’m telling the truth now.””
“Now?””
“Yes.””
“After months of lying?””
“I was trying to protect Maya.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“What?””
“You were trying to protect yourself.””
Claire cried.
But I didn’t feel the same sympathy anymore.
Because every excuse led back to one person.
Her.
Not Maya.
Not me.
Her.
“Where is Daniel now?””
“I told you. I don’t know.””
“Then who sent me the messages?””
Another pause.
“What messages?””
“The ones exposing everything.””
Claire went silent.
Then:
“Marcus…”
“What?””
Her voice changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
“Don’t trust whoever is helping you.””
I frowned.
“Why?””
“Because Daniel isn’t the only person who knows.””
The room felt colder.
“What are you talking about?””
“I thought it was just him.””
“But?””
“But yesterday, someone else contacted me.””
“Who?””
“I don’t know.””
“What did they say?””
Claire hesitated.
“‘The father can never know the whole truth.’”
My stomach dropped.
“What father?””
No answer.
“Claire.””
Then I heard something.
A sound behind her.
A door opening.
Claire’s breathing changed.
“Where are you?””
“Marcus…”
“Where are you?””
She whispered:
“I have to go.””
“No.””
“I’m sorry.””
“Claire!””
The call ended.
I stared at the phone.
Then Maya spoke.
“Daddy?””
I looked at her.
“Yeah?””
“Is Mommy coming back?””
The question destroyed me.
Because after everything, she still wanted her mother.
She still loved her.
That was the thing about children.
They could be hurt by someone and still hope that person would become better.
“I don’t know, sweetheart.””
She looked down.
“Did she do something bad?””
I swallowed.
“Yes.””
Her eyes filled.
“But…”
I took her hand.
“People can do bad things and still love someone.””
“Do you still love Mommy?””
The honest answer was complicated.
“Yes.””
She looked surprised.
“But I don’t trust her right now.””
Maya nodded slowly.
Like she understood more than an eight-year-old should.
A nurse entered.
“Mr. Bennett?””
“Yes?””
“There’s someone here asking for you.””
My body immediately tensed.
“Who?””
The nurse looked at her clipboard.
“A woman named Rachel.””
I stood.
“Where is she?””
“She’s waiting outside.””
I stepped into the hallway.
Rachel looked exhausted.
Her hair was messy.
Her eyes were red.
But she was carrying something.
A folder.
“What is that?””
She looked behind me toward Maya’s room.
“The truth.””
I stared at her.
“About Maya?””
Rachel nodded.
“And about Claire.””
I took the folder.
Inside was a document.
A hospital birth record.
A DNA report.
And one photograph.
A photograph of a man standing outside the hospital the day Maya was born.
I recognized him immediately.
Daniel.
But that wasn’t the part that made my hands shake.
It was the date.
Because Daniel wasn’t just there when Maya was born.
He was there nine months earlier.
The day the pregnancy test turned positive.
Rachel watched my face.
“Marcus…”
I looked up.
“Why was Daniel at the hospital when Maya was born?””
Rachel swallowed.
“Because he wasn’t just Claire’s friend.””
My heart stopped.
“Then what was he?””
Rachel whispered:
“He was the doctor who handled your daughter’s birth.””
I looked down at the papers.
And then I saw the signature.
The person who signed Maya’s original birth record.
The name I had never noticed.
Because I trusted my wife.
Because I never thought I needed to check.
May you like
The signature belonged to:
*Daniel Parker.*
