Chapter 8: The Last Will and the Missing Page

The Williams estate looked different when we returned.

The fountains were still running.

The gardens were still perfectly trimmed.

The enormous windows still reflected the afternoon sunlight.

But the house no longer looked like a home.

It looked like a museum built to preserve a lie.

Daniel insisted on accompanying us, and Detective Mitchell arranged for two officers to remain outside.

Evelyn was waiting in the library.

She wore a cream silk blouse and black trousers.

Her silver hair was perfectly arranged.

There was no sign that she had spent the previous day being questioned about an eleven-million-dollar fraud investigation.

She looked like a woman preparing to host a charity luncheon.

"Marcus.""

She stood.

He didn't move.

"Where's the original will?""

Evelyn glanced at me.

"Hello, Maya.""

I said nothing.

She smiled faintly.

"Still pretending you're part of this family?""

Marcus stepped forward.

"Answer the question.""

Evelyn sighed.

"You're becoming very unpleasant.""

"And you're becoming very predictable.""

Her smile disappeared.

She walked to a cabinet and removed a black leather folder.

"Your father gave this to me shortly before he died.""

She placed it on the desk.

Marcus opened it.

Inside were several legal documents, but the final page was missing.

Daniel examined the papers.

"These appear to be copies of the original estate documents.""

Evelyn nodded.

"Your father wanted me to keep them safe.""

Marcus looked at her.

"Then where's the final page?""

"With Richard.""

Daniel raised an eyebrow.

"Why would Mr. Hale have it?""

"Because he was present when your father signed the revised will.""

I stepped forward.

"What does the missing page say?""

Evelyn looked at me.

"It explains why your mother never told you who your real father was.""

I stared at her.

"You're not going to manipulate me with my mother's secrets.""

Evelyn laughed.

"Your mother was very good at hiding things. She wasn't nearly as innocent as you believe.""

Marcus slammed his hand against the desk.

"Enough!""

The sound echoed through the library.

He pointed at the folder.

"Show me the page.""

Evelyn's expression changed.

For a moment, I saw the frightened woman from the ballroom.

Then she regained control.

"Your father believed Maya should inherit the controlling trust.""

Marcus nodded.

"We know.""

"But he also believed you should be protected from her.""

I frowned.

"Protected from me?""

Evelyn turned toward Marcus.

"Your father knew that Richard was Maya's biological father. He also knew Richard had another child.""

"Olivia," Marcus said.

"Yes.""

Evelyn walked toward the window.

"He believed Richard's children would eventually fight over the inheritance. He wanted to prevent that.""

Daniel folded his arms.

"That doesn't explain the missing page.""

Evelyn turned.

"The final page included a condition.""

Marcus leaned forward.

"What condition?""

She looked directly at him.

"Your father wanted a DNA test before the trust could be transferred.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Between whom?""

"Between Maya and Richard.""

Marcus frowned.

"But if Maya is Richard's daughter, why would that matter?""

Evelyn smiled.

"Because Richard has spent years claiming paternity without acknowledging the full circumstances.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"Mrs. Williams, are you suggesting the DNA evidence is unreliable?""

"I'm suggesting everyone should be careful before believing a story written by a dead woman.""

I looked at her.

"Why are you doing this?""

Her expression hardened.

"Because you have no idea what your mother did.""

I took a breath.

"Then tell me.""

Evelyn opened another drawer.

She removed a photograph.

It showed my mother standing outside a hospital.

Beside her was a man I didn't recognize.

"Your mother didn't simply have an affair with Richard," Evelyn said.

"She was involved in a financial arrangement that nearly destroyed this family.""

Marcus shook his head.

"That's not what Richard told us.""

"Richard tells people whatever makes him look innocent.""

Evelyn placed the photograph on the desk.

"Your mother worked for the foundation before you were born. She had access to financial records. She knew about the money Richard was moving.""

Daniel looked up.

"Richard was moving foundation money?""

Evelyn nodded.

"He and your father were involved in a private investment project. When it failed, Richard blamed everyone else.""

I stared at her.

"You're trying to make my mother look like a criminal.""

"I'm telling you she wasn't perfect.""

"Neither are you.""

Evelyn's lips tightened.

Marcus took the photograph.

"Why did you keep this?""

"Because I knew one day the truth would matter.""

He studied it.

Then he noticed something on the back.

A handwritten date.

And a short sentence.

Eleanor met with Richard before the accident.

Marcus turned it over.

"What's this?""

Evelyn's face changed.

"Nothing.""

"Who wrote it?""

"Your father.""

Daniel immediately took the photograph.

"This needs to be examined.""

Evelyn reached for it.

"Give that back!""

Daniel stepped away.

"Please don't touch the evidence.""

For the first time, Evelyn lost her composure.

She slammed her palm against the desk.

"You people have no idea what you're doing!""

Marcus stared at her.

"Then explain why my father wrote that note.""

She looked at him.

Then she looked at me.

And finally, she said something I hadn't expected.

"Because he knew Richard had been meeting Eleanor in secret.""

I felt my pulse quicken.

"Before she died?""

Evelyn nodded.

"Yes.""

"Why?""

"Because she wanted to take Maya away.""

The room went silent.

I stared at her.

"Take me where?""

"Out of the country.""

Marcus frowned.

"Why?""

Evelyn looked at me.

"Because your mother had discovered something about your inheritance. Something she believed would put you in danger.""

I felt a chill move down my spine.

"What did she discover?""

Evelyn didn't answer.

Instead, she reached into the folder and removed a second document.

It was a bank statement.

A large transfer had been made six years earlier.

The amount was $2.5 million.

The recipient was an offshore account.

The authorization bore my mother's name.

I stared at the page.

"That's impossible.""

Evelyn nodded.

"Your mother moved that money shortly before she died.""

Marcus looked at Daniel.

"Can this be verified?""

Daniel examined the account information.

"I'll need the original banking records.""

Evelyn smiled.

"Of course. Everyone wants proof.""

She stepped closer to me.

"But perhaps Maya should explain why her mother transferred two and a half million dollars before her accident.""

I felt anger rise.

"My mother didn't steal anything.""

"Then where did the money go?""

I had no answer.

But I knew something.

Evelyn wanted me to believe my mother had been corrupt.

And I wasn't going to give her that satisfaction.

I turned toward Marcus.

"We're leaving.""

He nodded.

Daniel collected the documents.

As we reached the door, Evelyn spoke again.

"Marcus.""

He stopped.

She sounded almost gentle.

"There's one thing your father wrote in that will that you haven't heard.""

Marcus didn't turn around.

"What?""

Evelyn's voice dropped.

"He instructed Richard to keep Maya away from you.""

I felt Marcus go still.

Evelyn continued.

"He knew who you both were. He knew what your relationship could become. And he believed it would destroy the family if the truth ever came out.""

Marcus slowly turned.

"What are you saying?""

Evelyn smiled.

"Ask Richard why he never told you that Maya's inheritance was conditional on you never becoming personally involved with her.""

I felt my face burn.

"That's ridiculous.""

"Is it?""

She opened the folder again.

This time, she removed a typed page.

It carried my father's signature.

At the bottom was a sentence:

My son Marcus must never be allowed to enter into any financial or personal arrangement with Maya Carter.

Marcus stared at it.

"Why?""

Evelyn's smile widened.

"Because your father knew that if the truth about your parentage came out, the two of you would be connected by more than friendship.""

I shook my head.

"You're trying to confuse us.""

Evelyn looked at me.

"Then ask Richard to explain the DNA report.""

We returned to Richard's house before sunset.

He was waiting in his study.

When Marcus showed him the document, Richard's expression darkened.

"Where did Evelyn get this?""

"From my father's will.""

Richard read it carefully.

Then he placed it on the desk.

"Your father was protecting the wrong person.""

Marcus frowned.

"What does that mean?""

Richard sat down.

"Your father discovered that Evelyn had altered the foundation's records years before he died. He knew she was planning to transfer control of the trust.""

Daniel leaned forward.

"Do you have evidence?""

Richard nodded.

"Yes. But the most important evidence isn't in the will.""

He opened a locked cabinet and removed a small black box.

Inside was a flash drive and a folded letter.

"The money your mother supposedly transferred six years ago wasn't stolen.""

I stared at him.

"Then where did it go?""

Richard looked at me.

"Your mother placed it into a protected account.""

"For whom?""

He pushed the letter across the desk.

The beneficiary's name was clearly printed.

Maya Carter.

My breath caught.

"Why would she do that?""

Richard's voice softened.

"Because she knew someone was going to try to steal your inheritance.""

Marcus stared at the document.

"How much is in the account now?""

Richard answered quietly.

"With interest and investments, approximately nine million dollars.""

I sat down.

Nine million.

My mother had left me nine million dollars.

But Richard wasn't finished.

He opened the black box and removed another document.

It was a copy of a bank transfer request dated six days earlier.

Someone had attempted to access the account.

The authorization had been rejected.

I looked at the signature.

My name.

My address.

My identification number.

I felt sick.

"Who tried to withdraw it?""

Richard looked at Marcus.

Then he looked at me.

"Your sister.""

I closed my eyes.

Olivia.

Again.

But then Richard pointed to a second signature on the request.

A witness signature.

Evelyn Williams.

Daniel immediately took out his phone.

"That's enough. We're notifying the investigators.""

Richard nodded.

"There's something else.""

He reached into the box one final time.

This time, he removed a photograph.

It showed Evelyn standing beside a man outside a private hospital.

The man wore a dark coat.

His face was partly hidden.

But I recognized him.

He was the same man standing beside my mother in the hospital photograph.

Richard watched my expression.

"Do you know who that is?""

I shook my head.

"No.""

He turned the photograph over.

A name was written on the back.

*Dr. Samuel Pierce.*

Marcus frowned.

"Who is he?""

Richard looked toward the window.

"The physician who signed your father's death certificate.""

The room went silent.

Marcus's face drained of color.

"My father died in the family home.""

Richard nodded.

"That's what you were told.""

I looked at the photograph again.

Richard's voice became almost a whisper.

"Your father was taken to a private clinic two days before his death. And according to the original medical report, he wasn't suffering from a heart condition.""

Marcus gripped the desk.

"Then what killed him?""

May you like

Richard looked at us.

"Poison.""
