Chapter 2: Eleven Million Dollars and a Seven-Year Lie

Nobody moved.
The silence inside the ballroom was so complete that I could hear the rain tapping against the enormous windows.
Marcus stared at Daniel.
"Eleven million dollars?""
Daniel placed his leather folder on a nearby table.
"Eleven million, four hundred thousand, to be exact.""
Evelyn immediately stepped forward.
"This is ridiculous. Who authorized you to interrupt a private wedding with these accusations?""
Daniel didn't even look at her.
"I'm responding to a financial emergency involving a foundation over which your family has fiduciary responsibilities.""
"You're making a scene!""
"No, Mrs. Williams. Someone else made the scene when they attempted to move charitable funds into an account registered to a private company.""
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
"Tell me this isn't true.""
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
"Baby, listen to me.""
"Just answer the question.""
She reached for his hand.
He stepped back.
"Did you try to transfer eleven million dollars?""
"Not for myself.""
"Then for whom?""
Vanessa glanced at Evelyn.
It was quick.
Almost invisible.
But Marcus noticed.
His expression hardened.
"Mom?""
Evelyn folded her arms.
"This is exactly why I didn't want that girl here. She has always been jealous of Vanessa.""
I felt something inside me snap.
"Jealous?""
I looked directly at her.
"You dragged me across a ballroom because I was trying to stop your family from being robbed.""
Evelyn stepped toward me.
"Watch your mouth.""
Marcus moved between us.
"Enough.""
Daniel opened the folder.
"I think everyone should hear what happened.""
He removed several printed documents and placed them on the table.
The first showed a bank transfer request.
The second contained a list of account numbers.
The third carried Marcus's name.
His signature appeared at the bottom.
But there was something wrong with it.
Marcus leaned closer.
"That's not my signature.""
Daniel nodded.
"We believe it was forged.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"Marcus, you signed those documents. You just don't remember because there were so many things happening with the wedding.""
"I would remember signing an eleven-million-dollar transfer.""
"You were busy. Your mother handled the paperwork.""
Marcus turned toward Evelyn.
"Did you give Vanessa access to my foundation accounts?""
Evelyn's lips tightened.
"I gave her access to certain administrative documents because she's going to be your wife.""
"That wasn't the question.""
"Don't speak to me like I'm a criminal!""
Daniel calmly placed another document on the table.
"Mrs. Williams, this authorization contains your electronic approval.""
The color disappeared from Evelyn's face.
Vanessa suddenly spoke.
"She told me it was legal.""
Evelyn whipped around.
"Be quiet.""
Marcus looked at her.
"What did you just say?""
Vanessa began crying.
"I trusted your mother. She told me the foundation money was being moved into a temporary investment account. She said it was part of a restructuring plan.""
Evelyn laughed bitterly.
"Don't you dare put this on me.""
"You promised me the money!""
The words escaped Vanessa before she could stop herself.
Several guests gasped.
Marcus closed his eyes briefly.
When he opened them, he looked older.
"How long has this been going on?""
Neither woman answered.
Daniel cleared his throat.
"There's another issue, Mr. Williams.""
He pulled out a smaller envelope.
"Three nights ago, the trustees received an anonymous report alleging that someone inside the foundation was falsifying beneficiary records.""
I looked at him.
He nodded slightly.
This was the part I'd been waiting for.
Marcus turned toward me.
"Maya, what did you hear three nights ago?""
I took a breath.
"Vanessa came to the foundation office after everyone had left. I was finishing the quarterly audit.""
Marcus frowned.
"You were working late?""
"I still work there, Marcus.""
"I know. I just—"
He stopped.
I understood.
For seven years, I had worked as a financial compliance analyst for the Williams Family Foundation.
I wasn't a stranger trying to enter his world.
I'd been part of the foundation long before Vanessa arrived.
I'd reviewed its grants, checked its accounts, and made sure the money actually reached the families it was supposed to help.
It was the work I loved.
It was also the reason Vanessa hated me.
Three nights earlier, I'd returned to my desk after hearing voices in the executive conference room.
I hadn't intended to listen.
But then I heard my name.
"Maya has been asking questions," Vanessa had said.
Evelyn replied, "Then make sure she stops.""
"What if she reports us?""
"She won't have the opportunity.""
I'd frozen outside the door.
Then Vanessa said something that made my stomach turn.
"Once Marcus signs the marriage papers, the money is ours. He'll never question anything I do.""
Evelyn laughed.
"By the time he notices, we'll be untouchable.""
I had taken out my phone and started recording.
Then I heard Vanessa mention the authorization forms.
She explained that she had created a company called Vantage Heritage Holdings.
The company was registered under a different name, but Vanessa controlled it.
The foundation's money was supposed to be transferred there in three separate transactions.
I had recognized the account numbers.
They belonged to a shell company that had already appeared in two suspicious invoices.
I'd copied the relevant documents and left the office.
The next morning, I tried calling Marcus.
He didn't answer.
I sent him photographs.
The messages showed as delivered, but no reply came.
Then I received a text from Vanessa.
Stop trying to contact my fiancé. You have no place in our relationship.
I had no idea how she knew about my messages.
Now I did.
She had access to his phone.
Or someone had been monitoring his communications.
Marcus listened without interrupting.
When I finished, he looked at Daniel.
"Why didn't anyone tell me about this investigation?""
Daniel opened another section of the folder.
"Because we couldn't establish whether the information reaching you was being intercepted. The trustees wanted independent evidence before confronting anyone.""
Marcus rubbed his forehead.
"Who filed the original report?""
Daniel hesitated.
Then he looked at me.
"Maya did.""
Marcus turned.
"You?""
I nodded.
"I submitted the evidence anonymously because I didn't know who I could trust.""
His face softened.
"Why didn't you come to me?""
"I tried.""
The words came out sharper than I intended.
"I called you thirty-seven times, Marcus. I sent you nineteen messages. I went to your office twice.""
His expression changed.
"Thirty-seven?""
"Yes.""
He looked at Vanessa.
She lowered her eyes.
"Did you block her?""
Vanessa shook her head quickly.
"No. Marcus, don't do this. She was constantly calling you. I thought you needed some space.""
"Space from Maya?""
"She's always been around you.""
Marcus stared at her.
"She's worked for my foundation for seven years.""
"Exactly!""
Vanessa's voice rose.
"Seven years, Marcus! Seven years of her being in your life. Always there.
Always knowing things about you. Do you know how uncomfortable that made me?""
I stared at her.
I finally understood.
It wasn't just about the money.
Vanessa had wanted to remove anyone who could see through her.
And I had been standing in her way.
Daniel closed the folder.
"Mr. Williams, the trustees have already frozen the suspicious accounts. But there's one document we haven't been able to authenticate.""
"What document?""
"The marriage-related financial agreement.""
Marcus frowned.
"What does my marriage have to do with the foundation?""
Daniel placed a final sheet on the table.
It was a document containing a clause I'd never seen before.
Marcus read it.
His face slowly went white.
"What the hell is this?""
Evelyn suddenly stepped forward.
"Daniel, that's a private agreement. You have no right to disclose it.""
Marcus looked at her.
"Mom, what is this?""
Daniel answered.
"An agreement that would give Vanessa access to voting rights over the foundation's controlling trust if your marriage took place today.""
Marcus looked toward the wedding arch.
The officiant was still standing there, holding his folder.
The marriage certificate was waiting.
And the wedding guests were beginning to whisper.
Vanessa's tears stopped.
"Marcus, I can explain.""
He held up the document.
"Then explain why this says my mother transferred part of her voting authority to you.""
Evelyn's face tightened.
"Because I was trying to protect your inheritance.""
"From whom?""
She looked at me.
"From people like her.""
I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
Then Daniel spoke again.
"There's another signature on the agreement.""
He pointed to the bottom of the page.
Marcus looked down.
His expression changed completely.
Because beside Evelyn's signature was another name.
A name that didn't belong to Vanessa.
Or anyone in the Williams family.
It was mine.
Maya Carter.
I stared at the document.
"I never signed that.""
Daniel nodded.
"We know.""
Marcus looked at him.
"Then who did?""
Daniel slowly removed a photograph from the folder.
It showed a woman standing outside a notary's office.
A woman with dark hair, a cream-colored coat, and a familiar silver bracelet.
I recognized the bracelet immediately.
May you like
It belonged to my older sister.
And I hadn't seen her in almost four years.
