Chapter 6: The Man My Mother Tried to Hide

I read the letter again.
Then a third time.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
My mother's rounded letters.
The little curl she always added to the end of her capital M.
The ink had faded, but the words remained clear.
Your biological father is alive, and he knows exactly who you are.
I looked at Olivia.
"Who is he?""
She shook her head.
"I don't know.""
"You found this letter four years ago.""
"I found the envelope. I never opened it.""
"Why?""
"Because Mom specifically told me not to.""
I stared at her.
"You disappeared to protect me from Evelyn, but you never thought to tell me that our mother left me a letter?""
Olivia lowered her eyes.
"I was afraid.""
I turned away.
I couldn't keep having the same conversation.
Fear had become everyone's excuse.
Fear had stolen four years from us.
Fear had nearly cost Marcus eleven million dollars.
And fear had allowed Evelyn Williams to control people who should have known better.
Marcus approached.
"Can I see it?""
I handed him the letter.
He read it slowly.
Then he looked at Daniel.
"Can you find out who this man is?""
Daniel examined the signature.
"I can try.""
I pointed to the name.
"His name is Richard Hale.""
Daniel's expression changed.
Marcus noticed immediately.
"What?""
Daniel looked at him.
"Richard Hale is a former chairman of the Williams Family Foundation.""
Marcus frowned.
"I know the name. He was my father's business partner.""
"Correct.""
"Was?""
Daniel nodded.
"He left the foundation approximately twenty years ago. He also resigned from the board of three companies after a dispute with your father.""
I looked at the letter.
"Why would my mother have his name?""
Daniel studied me.
"Because Richard Hale may be your biological father.""
Marcus went still.
Olivia looked at the floor.
I felt a strange mixture of anger and disbelief.
My mother had been dead for six years.
I had spent my entire adult life believing I knew where I came from.
Now, in a single afternoon, I had discovered that my family history was built on secrets.
"Can we contact him?"" I asked.
Daniel nodded.
"I'll make the arrangements.""
An hour later, we were taken to a quiet room at the police station.
Detective Mitchell had asked us to remain available while investigators examined the documents.
Vanessa and Evelyn were still being questioned separately.
The officers had also requested that neither woman contact the other.
Marcus sat across from me.
He had removed his wedding jacket.
His shirt sleeves were rolled up, and the expensive watch on his wrist was ticking loudly in the silence.
"How are you holding up?"" he asked.
I gave a tired smile.
"Do you want the honest answer?""
"Always.""
"I feel like someone took my entire life and shook it until nothing made sense.""
He nodded.
"That's how I feel too.""
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then Marcus said something I hadn't expected.
"I don't think I can go back to that house.""
I looked at him.
"Your mother's house?""
"The family estate. Every room reminds me of something I believed that wasn't true.""
I understood.
Evelyn had built an entire world around him.
A world of expensive dinners, private schools, family photographs, and carefully rehearsed stories.
Now he was questioning every memory.
"Where will you go?"" I asked.
"I don't know.""
He looked at me.
"Maybe a hotel.""
"That's probably best for tonight.""
He nodded.
Then he glanced at the letter.
"Do you think your mother wanted us to find each other?""
I considered that.
"I think she wanted the truth to survive her.""
Marcus looked down.
"Even if it destroyed everything?""
I folded the letter carefully.
"Maybe she knew the truth was already destroying everything. We just didn't know it.""
At 8:17 p.m., Daniel returned with news.
"Richard Hale has agreed to meet.""
My heart jumped.
"Where?""
"His private residence. He's seventy-four and currently lives outside the city.""
"Why didn't he contact me before?""
Daniel hesitated.
"According to his assistant, he has been trying to locate you for several years.""
I frowned.
"That makes no sense.""
Daniel handed me a printed email.
It was dated four years earlier.
The sender was Richard Hale.
The recipient was Olivia Carter.
The subject line read:
I need to speak to Maya before Evelyn finds her.
I looked at my sister.
Olivia covered her mouth.
"How did you get that?""
"His assistant forwarded it to our office," Daniel replied.
I read the message.
*Olivia, I know you are frightened. But your mother left something important with me. I cannot explain it over email.
Please arrange a meeting with Maya. I will protect her.*
I looked at Olivia.
"Did you receive this?""
She nodded slowly.
"Yes.""
My voice became cold.
"And you never told me.""
"I was working for Evelyn by then. She had access to my accounts.""
"That doesn't answer my question.""
Olivia's eyes filled.
"I deleted it because I thought she would find out.""
I stood.
"Every time I think I understand why you left, I discover another thing you chose not to tell me.""
She didn't defend herself.
That was the worst part.
Detective Mitchell entered before I could say anything else.
"Miss Carter, there's something you need to understand before you meet Mr. Hale.""
I turned.
"What?""
"Richard Hale is not only connected to the Williams family. He was also named in an earlier investigation involving your mother's death.""
My chest tightened.
"What investigation?""
She opened a file.
"Your mother, Eleanor Carter, died in a single-vehicle accident six years ago.""
I nodded.
I'd never questioned the official report.
The police had said she lost control of her car during heavy rain.
But Detective Mitchell continued.
"The vehicle's maintenance records show that its brake system had been serviced only two days before the accident.""
I stared at her.
"What are you saying?""
"We're not making an accusation. But the service records were altered, and the original mechanic has recently agreed to speak with investigators.""
Olivia began crying.
"Mom always knew.""
I turned toward her.
"What?""
Olivia reached for the letter.
"That's why she left the envelope. She told me she was afraid something would happen to her.""
I felt my knees weaken.
"Why didn't you tell the police?""
"Because Evelyn showed me a document that made it look like our mother had been stealing from the foundation. I thought if I spoke, they would blame her for everything.""
Detective Mitchell closed the file.
"That's why we need to speak with Richard Hale as soon as possible.""
The following morning, Marcus, Daniel, and I drove to Richard Hale's residence.
It was an old brick mansion surrounded by tall oak trees.
Unlike the Williams estate, there were no fountains or enormous gates.
The house looked quiet.
Almost forgotten.
A woman in her sixties opened the door.
"Mr. Hale is expecting you.""
She led us into a study filled with books and framed photographs.
An elderly man stood beside the fireplace.
His hair was white, but his posture remained straight.
His eyes moved from Marcus to Daniel.
Then they stopped on me.
For a long moment, he simply stared.
Finally, he whispered:
"Eleanor's daughter.""
I nodded.
"Are you Richard Hale?""
He stepped forward.
"Yes.""
I held out the letter.
"My mother left this.""
His hands trembled when he recognized the handwriting.
"She kept it.""
"You knew about me?""
Richard closed his eyes.
"Every single year.""
I felt anger rise.
"Then why didn't you come looking for me?""
He looked toward the window.
"Because Evelyn threatened to destroy anyone who revealed the truth.""
Marcus stepped forward.
"What truth?""
Richard looked at him.
"Your father knew about Maya.""
Marcus frowned.
"How?""
Richard took a photograph from his desk.
It showed my mother standing beside a younger man.
Richard.
And in the background was a little girl.
Me.
I was perhaps three years old.
My mother was holding my hand.
Richard placed the photograph on the table.
"I was in love with Eleanor before she married the man you believed was your father.""
I stared at him.
"Did you know I was yours?""
He nodded.
"Your mother told me before you were born.""
"Then why did she marry someone else?""
Richard's eyes filled.
"Because I was married at the time, and she refused to raise a child inside a scandal. She wanted you to have a stable home.""
I felt my throat tighten.
"And Evelyn?""
Richard's expression darkened.
"She knew about the affair. She knew I had a daughter.""
Marcus stepped closer.
"What does that have to do with my mother?""
Richard looked at him.
"Your father discovered the truth shortly before he died. He intended to change his will and expose Evelyn's financial activities.""
Marcus froze.
"My father died of a heart attack.""
"That's what the family was told.""
Richard walked toward his desk and unlocked a drawer.
He removed a small black flash drive.
"Your father recorded a conversation with Evelyn two days before his death.""
Daniel leaned forward.
"Do you have a copy?""
Richard nodded.
"Yes. And I've kept it hidden because I knew she would do anything to destroy it.""
I looked at the flash drive.
"What's on it?""
Richard's face became grim.
"Proof that Evelyn knew about the fraud. Proof that she manipulated the family trust. And proof that she had been planning to remove Marcus from control of the foundation.""
Marcus stared at him.
"Why would she do that?""
Richard looked at me.
"Because your father intended to leave the controlling shares to his firstborn child.""
I frowned.
"Marcus?""
Richard shook his head.
"No.""
He placed another document on the table.
It was an original copy of my father's revised will.
At the top was a date from six months before his death.
And beneath the list of beneficiaries was my name.
Maya Carter.
I stared at it.
"Why would he leave everything to me?""
Richard's voice softened.
"Because he knew the truth about your birth. And because he believed you were the only person who could stop Evelyn.""
Marcus slowly sat down.
Daniel took photographs of the document.
Then Richard pressed a button on a small recorder.
A man's voice filled the study.
It was Marcus's father.
I had heard it before in old family videos.
But this time, he sounded frightened.
"If you're listening to this, Evelyn has already begun moving the foundation money.""
There was a pause.
Then the man's voice continued.
"And if anything happens to me, do not let her tell Marcus that Maya is the enemy.""
Marcus looked at me.
Richard stopped the recording.
"There's more," he said.
I leaned forward.
"What?""
Richard looked directly at Marcus.
"Your father knew Evelyn had another child.""
Marcus frowned.
"Vanessa?""
Richard nodded.
"But Vanessa isn't the only child Evelyn hid.""
The room went silent.
He opened a second folder.
Inside were two birth certificates.
One belonged to Vanessa Reed.
The other belonged to a child born twenty-seven years earlier.
The mother's name was Evelyn Williams.
The father's name was Richard Hale.
I stared at him.
Richard's face crumpled.
"I had a daughter with Evelyn before she married your father.""
Marcus looked at the document.
Then he looked at me.
Richard whispered:
"Vanessa is not your sister's only connection to this family.""
He took a breath.
"The second child is the person who has been helping Evelyn move the money.""
Daniel leaned closer.
"Who?""
Richard slid the certificate across the table.
The name was clearly printed.
*Olivia Carter.*
I stopped breathing.
My sister.
The woman who had just turned herself in.
The woman who claimed she had helped Evelyn because she was afraid.
The woman who had spent four years hiding from me.
Olivia wasn't just involved in the fraud.
According to the document, she was Evelyn's biological daughter.
And that meant the woman who had raised me might not have been the only person Olivia had been hiding from.
Richard looked at me with tears in his eyes.
"There's one more thing, Maya.""
I couldn't speak.
He pointed to the date on the birth certificate.
"Olivia was born three months before your mother married the man who raised you.""
May you like
Then he whispered:
"Your sister knew who her real mother was all along.""
