Chapter 9: The Man Who Was Never Supposed To Exist
The name stayed in the air long after the phone call ended.
I couldn’t move.
I couldn’t speak.
I just stood there, holding my phone, trying to understand what I had heard.
A man who had been dead for six years.
A man the caller claimed was Lily’s biological father.
A man whose existence would change everything.
Sarah looked at me.
Her face had lost all color.
“You heard him.””
I slowly lowered the phone.
“Who is he?””
She didn’t answer.
“Sarah.””
Her eyes moved toward Lily’s hospital bed.
Then back to me.
“I know that name.””
My heart started pounding.
“How?””
She sat down.
“I saw it before.””
“Where?””
“In Daniel’s files.””
I stared at her.
“You knew?””
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“I knew the name. I didn’t know what it meant.””
I stepped closer.
“What name?””
She swallowed.
“Michael Bennett.””
The room went silent.
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Who was Michael Bennett?””
Sarah looked at Lily.
“Someone Daniel hated.””
The next morning, I met the man who had called me.
His name was Thomas.
He was a private investigator.
Not the kind from movies.
Not dramatic.
Just a tired man with a briefcase full of documents and a face that looked like he had carried too many secrets.
He sat across from me in the hospital cafeteria.
“I owe you an explanation.””
I folded my arms.
“You owe me the truth.””
He nodded.
“That’s fair.””
He placed a folder on the table.
“Daniel hired me three years ago.””
My stomach tightened.
“For what?””
“To investigate Michael Bennett.””
“Why?””
Thomas looked uncomfortable.
“Because Daniel believed Michael was connected to Lily’s birth.””
I stared at him.
“But Michael was dead.””
“Yes.””
“Then why investigate him?””
Thomas opened the folder.
Inside were photos.
Documents.
Old records.
“Because Daniel didn’t believe Michael was dead.””
My breath caught.
“What?””
Thomas looked at me.
“He believed Michael disappeared.””
I looked through the papers.
A picture of a man.
Dark hair.
Kind eyes.
A face I had never seen before.
But something about him felt familiar.
Not because I knew him.
Because I had seen that expression.
In Lily.
“He was alive when Lily was born?””
Thomas nodded.
“Yes.””
My hands went cold.
“Then why did Daniel say he was dead?””
Thomas looked at me.
“That’s the question you need to ask him.””
When I returned to Lily’s room, Daniel was there.
Standing by the window.
Waiting.
He turned when I entered.
“Where were you?””
I ignored the question.
“Who is Michael Bennett?””
His face changed.
Not confusion.
Not surprise.
Fear.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
And that was enough.
“Who told you that name?””
I walked closer.
“Answer me.””
Daniel looked away.
“Emma.””
“Who is he?””
Silence.
Then:
“Someone from the past.””
“The past?””
I laughed softly.
“You always make things sound smaller than they are.””
He looked at me.
“Because you don’t understand.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I understand one thing.””
I placed the DNA report on the table.
“You changed this.””
His face went pale.
“Where did you get that?””
“The real question is why you needed a fake one.””
Daniel stared at the paper.
For once, he had no words.
“Did you know Lily was mine?””
“Yes.””
The answer came quietly.
My heart broke.
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
“And you still let me believe I wasn’t?””
“I never wanted you to believe that.””
“Then why?””
He looked at the floor.
“Because I needed time.””
“Time for what?””
He didn’t answer.
I stepped closer.
“Daniel.””
His voice became barely audible.
“To protect her.””
I froze.
“From who?””
He looked at Lily.
And whispered:
“Michael.””
I couldn’t believe him.
Not because I thought Michael was innocent.
Because Daniel had lied so many times that even the truth sounded like another manipulation.
“You’re blaming a dead man?””
Daniel’s face tightened.
“I’m telling you what happened.””
“Then tell me everything.””
He sat down.
For the first time in days, he looked exhausted.
Not angry.
Not defensive.
Just tired.
“Before I met you, Michael and I knew each other.””
“How?””
“Work.””
“What kind of work?””
He hesitated.
“Business.””
I waited.
He sighed.
“We were partners.””
The word surprised me.
“You never told me.””
“I wanted to forget that part of my life.””
“That’s convenient.””
He looked at me.
“Michael was dangerous.””
I stared at him.
“Then why did he have a child with someone?””
Daniel’s expression changed.
Because he knew exactly what I meant.
“Lily’s mother?””
“Yes.””
He was quiet.
Then:
“She wasn’t supposed to be involved.””
My stomach tightened.
“What does that mean?””
“Michael made choices.””
“That doesn’t answer me.””
Daniel rubbed his hands together.
“When Michael died, there were questions.””
“What questions?””
“About Lily.””
I looked toward my daughter.
“Why?””
“Because Michael left behind evidence.””
“What evidence?””
He looked at me.
“That Lily was his.””
The words hurt.
Not because I believed them.
Because Daniel had spent years using them.
“But the DNA test says she’s mine.””
“Yes.””
“Because I raised her.””
He nodded.
“Yes.””
“Because I’m her mother.””
“Yes.””
I stepped closer.
“Then why did you keep searching?””
Daniel looked away.
“Because I thought if Michael had family…”
He stopped.
“If he had family, what?””
“They might come for her.””
The answer surprised me.
“Come for her?””
“Yes.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
I looked at him.
“You didn’t protect Lily.””
His eyes lifted.
“You hid her.””
Silence.
“You erased her history.””
“Emma—”
“You made her think she didn’t belong.””
“I was scared.””
“So was she.””
That sentence destroyed him.
His face changed.
Because maybe, finally, he understood.
Not the documents.
Not the DNA.
Not the custody battle.
The child.
The little girl who had looked at me and asked if she belonged.
That night, I sat beside Lily while she slept.
I watched her breathe.
I watched her tiny hand hold onto the edge of my sleeve.
Like she was afraid I might disappear.
I promised myself something.
No more secrets.
No more adults making decisions for her.
No more fear.
My phone buzzed.
A message from Thomas.
*I found the final piece.*
A photo appeared.
It was a hospital document.
The date was six years ago.
The day Lily was born.
I opened it.
My heart stopped.
The document showed a visitor entry.
A name.
A signature.
Michael Bennett.
He had been at the hospital.
The day Lily was born.
Alive.
Not missing.
Not gone.
Alive.
I zoomed in.
There was another note attached.
A handwritten message.
My hands trembled as I read it.
*If anything happens to me, make sure Daniel never finds out the truth.*
I stared at the sentence.
Because it meant Michael knew something.
Something Daniel didn’t want anyone to know.
Then another message arrived.
From Thomas.
*Emma, there’s one more thing.*
I opened it.
*Michael Bennett did not die six years ago.*
My heart stopped.
A second message appeared.
*The death certificate Daniel showed you was fake.*
I looked at Lily.
Then at the screen.
A man who was supposed to be dead.
A father who was supposed to be gone.
A secret buried for six years.
And then the final message came.
*I found Michael Bennett.*
My hands started shaking.
The next line appeared.
*He is alive.*
I stood frozen.
Because the entire story I had been told…
The affair.
The DNA test.
The adoption papers.
The lies.
None of them were the beginning.
They were only the cover-up.
And somewhere out there was the man Daniel had spent six years pretending did not exist.
The man who might know why my daughter was never supposed to be part of Daniel’s plan.
A knock came at the hospital door.
I looked up.
A stranger stood there.
Older.
Tired.
With tears in his eyes.
He looked directly at Lily.
Then at me.
And whispered:
“I’m sorry I’m late.””
My heart stopped.
Because I knew who he was.
May you like
Michael Bennett.
And he had come back for my daughter.
