Chapter 7: The Child Daniel Tried To Erase

For several seconds, I couldn’t understand the words I had just heard.

*That boy is the reason Lily was never supposed to exist.*

The sentence repeated inside my head.

Again.

And again.

Like a warning I couldn’t escape.

I looked at the picture on my phone.

A little boy.

Seven years old.

Dark hair.

A nervous smile.

A child who looked like he was waiting for someone to choose him.

And beneath his picture was the name of the man I had loved.

*Father: Daniel Carter.*

My hands went cold.

“What did you say?””

Daniel didn’t answer immediately.

That silence told me everything.

“You heard me.””

“No.””

I stood up from the hospital chair.

“No, I don’t think I did.””

My voice shook.

“Explain.””

“Emma—”

“Explain why there is a child with your name on his records.””

Daniel sighed.

“It’s not simple.””

I closed my eyes.

There it was again.

That phrase.

The excuse people used when the truth was too ugly to say.

“Who is he?””

Daniel stayed silent.

“Who is that boy?””

Finally, he whispered:

“His name is Noah.””

I looked at the photo again.

“Noah.””

The name felt strange.

A stranger’s name connected to my family.

“How old is he?””

“Seven.””

Seven.

One year older than Lily.

My stomach twisted.

“You had another child before Lily.””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me.””

“No.””

The honesty shocked me.

Not because it was brave.

Because it was too late.

“You married me while hiding a child?””

“Emma, listen—”

“No.””

I walked away from the window.

“You don’t get to explain this like it’s some misunderstanding.””

“It wasn’t like that.””

“Then what was it?””

Silence.

“Daniel.””

His voice became quiet.

“His mother and I…”

He stopped.

I waited.

But I already knew.

“His mother and you what?””

“We made mistakes.””

A bitter laugh escaped me.

Mistakes.

Everyone had a different word for the damage they caused.

Evelyn called cruelty discipline.

Daniel called betrayal a mistake.

“What happened to Noah’s mother?””

“She left.””

“Left him?””

“Yes.””

“And you?””

Another silence.

The answer hurt before he even said it.

“I couldn’t take care of him.””

I stared at the hospital wall.

“You couldn’t?””

“I was young.””

“You were an adult.””

“I was twenty-three.””

“So?””

He exhaled.

“I didn’t know how to be a father.””

My voice lowered.

“But you learned.””

“Yes.””

“When Lily was born.””

“No.””

The answer came too quickly.

I froze.

“What?””

Daniel went quiet.

Then:

“I learned when I met you.””

The words should have sounded comforting.

They didn’t.

Because I suddenly realized something.

Daniel didn’t become a father when Lily was born.

He became one when someone else forced him to.

And that scared me.

Because if love depended on circumstances…

What happened when circumstances changed?

I found Noah the next morning.

Not because Daniel told me.

Because Sarah did.

She sent me an address.

A small apartment complex on the other side of town.

I sat in my car for ten minutes before getting out.

I didn’t know what I expected.

Maybe another secret.

Maybe another lie.

But I didn’t expect to see a child who looked lonely.

The woman who opened the door was named Rachel.

She looked surprised when she saw me.

“You’re Emma.””

Not a question.

A statement.

I felt my stomach tighten.

“You know who I am?””

She nodded.

“Daniel told me about you.””

I almost laughed.

“Of course he did.””

Rachel looked uncomfortable.

“He said you were kind.””

That hurt.

Because it sounded like something the old Daniel would say.

The Daniel I remembered.

“Where is Noah?””

Her face changed.

“He’s inside.””

A small voice came from behind her.

“Mom?””

The boy appeared.

The picture didn’t prepare me.

Because pictures don’t show sadness.

Noah looked at me with curious eyes.

Then his expression changed.

“Are you…”

He stopped.

Rachel looked at him.

“Noah.””

The boy swallowed.

“Are you Lily’s mom?””

My heart stopped.

“Yes.””

He nodded slowly.

“I thought so.””

I looked at Rachel.

“What did he tell you?””

She looked away.

“Not enough.””

That answer was painful.

I stepped inside.

The apartment was small.

But clean.

There were drawings on the walls.

School papers on the table.

A backpack near the door.

A normal child’s life.

Except for one thing.

There was a framed picture on the shelf.

Daniel.

Holding Noah.

Years ago.

Before Lily.

Before me.

Before all the lies.

“He visits sometimes,” Rachel said.

I looked at her.

“Sometimes?””

She nodded.

“Usually when he feels guilty.””

The words hit hard.

“Guilty?””

Rachel looked at Noah.

“Daniel loves his son.””

I waited.

“But?””

She sighed.

“But he always leaves.””

The room went quiet.

Noah looked down.

Children always knew more than adults thought.

“How often does he see him?””

Rachel hesitated.

“Not enough.””

I looked at Noah.

Seven years old.

The same age Lily would be soon.

A child waiting for his father.

Just like Lily had been waiting for hers.

Except Lily still believed he would come.

Noah already knew better.

Rachel showed me something before I left.

A folder.

Not unlike the one Sarah gave me.

“Daniel gave this to me years ago.””

I opened it.

Inside were legal documents.

Custody agreements.

Financial records.

And one letter.

“What is this?””

Rachel looked away.

“The letter he wrote after Noah was born.””

I unfolded it.

The handwriting was Daniel’s.

I recognized it immediately.

My heart tightened as I read.

I’m not ready to be the father he deserves.

I stopped.

There were more lines.

Maybe someone else can give him the life I can’t.

I closed my eyes.

Because suddenly I understood.

Daniel didn’t abandon Noah because he couldn’t be a father.

He abandoned Noah because being a father was inconvenient.

And now he was doing something similar with Lily.

Only this time…

He had a target.

Me.

When I returned to the hospital, Daniel was waiting.

The moment he saw my face, he knew.

“You went to see him.””

I didn’t answer.

“You had no right.””

I stared at him.

“No right?””

His anger disappeared.

“What?””

“You abandoned your own son.””

His face changed.

“That’s not what happened.””

“No?””

I threw the folder onto the table.

“Then explain.””

He looked at the papers.

His expression fell.

“Where did you get these?””

“From Rachel.””

He closed his eyes.

“Emma…”

“You said you learned to be a father because of me.””

He looked at me.

“I did.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You learned to be a father when Lily made you feel important.””

“That’s not fair.””

“Fair?””

I stepped closer.

“You left one child behind and then convinced yourself you were a good father because you stayed for another.””

His face turned red.

“You don’t know what happened.””

“Then tell me.””

Silence.

“Tell me why Noah wasn’t enough.””

Daniel looked away.

And that was the answer.

I felt tears in my eyes.

Not for him.

For the children.

For Noah.

For Lily.

For every moment they waited for someone who should have been there.

Then Daniel whispered:

“I was afraid.””

I looked at him.

“Of what?””

He swallowed.

“Of becoming my father.””

The sentence surprised me.

But it didn’t excuse him.

“You had a choice.””

“I know.””

“No. You don’t.””

My voice cracked.

“You keep saying you know after you hurt people.””

The hospital room fell silent.

Then Daniel’s phone buzzed.

He looked at it.

I saw fear flash across his face.

Again.

I reached for it.

This time, he didn’t stop me.

The message was from an unknown number.

One line.

*The DNA results are ready.*

My heart started pounding.

I looked at Daniel.

“What DNA results?””

He didn’t answer.

“Daniel.””

His face went pale.

“Emma…”

“What did you test?””

He looked at me.

And slowly said:

“It’s not about Noah.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Then who?””

His eyes moved toward Lily’s room.

And I felt the world tilt.

“It’s about Lily.””

I couldn’t move.

“Why would there be DNA results about Lily?””

Daniel’s voice broke.

“Because someone has been lying about who she is.””

I stared at him.

The hallway lights flickered above us.

Then his phone buzzed again.

A second message appeared.

*The test confirms Lily is not biologically related to Emma.*

I stopped breathing.

Because the words I had spent my entire life fearing were suddenly on a screen.

May you like

And underneath them was another message.

*Daniel, you were right. She was never her mother.*
