Chapter 3: The Secret Evelyn Was Afraid To Reveal
I stared at the message until the words blurred.
*If you want to know what Daniel did, come alone. He doesn’t know I kept the proof.*
My first instinct was anger.
My second was fear.
Because coming from Evelyn, those words felt impossible.
This was the same woman who had stood in my kitchen and watched my six-year-old daughter tremble with a 104-degree fever.
The same woman who had called cruelty “discipline.””
The same woman who had spent years making me feel like I was never good enough for her son.
But now she was saying she had proof.
Proof of what?
The affair?
The bruises?
Something worse?
“Who was that?””
Daniel’s voice pulled me back.
I looked up.
He was standing beside Lily’s hospital bed, watching me carefully.
Too carefully.
Like he was trying to read my thoughts.
I locked my phone.
“No one.””
His expression changed.
A small flash of recognition crossed his face.
Because he knew those words.
He had just used them on me.
“Emma.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“You’re hiding something.””
I almost smiled.
The irony was almost painful.
“You noticed?””
His face tightened.
“Don’t do this.””
“Do what?””
“Turn everything into a fight.””
I looked at Lily.
My daughter was sleeping under a thin hospital blanket, her cheeks still flushed from the fever.
Then I looked back at my husband.
“Daniel, my child was sick in this house. She was scared. She had bruises. You knew something was wrong, and you said nothing.””
His shoulders dropped.
“I didn’t know it was that bad.””
“You didn’t want to know.””
The sentence landed harder than I expected.
Because he didn’t argue.
He just stood there.
Silent.
And that silence confirmed what I had been afraid to admit.
Daniel wasn’t innocent.
Maybe he didn’t hurt Lily himself.
But he had allowed someone else to.
The nurse entered the room.
“Her fever is coming down slightly,” she said.
“That’s a good sign.””
I immediately moved closer.
“Can I stay with her?””
“Of course.””
The nurse smiled gently.
“She’s lucky to have you.””
I looked at Lily.
The words hurt.
Because I kept thinking about the person who was supposed to be lucky enough to have her.
Her father.
The nurse left.
Daniel grabbed his jacket.
“Where are you going?””
He hesitated.
“I need to make a call.””
“To Sarah?””
His jaw tightened.
“No.””
“Then who?””
He didn’t answer.
That was all I needed.
I stepped in front of him.
“You’re not leaving.””
“Emma—”
“No.””
My voice was quiet.
But firm.
“You don’t get to disappear every time something becomes uncomfortable.””
His eyes met mine.
For a moment, I saw the man I married.
The man who held my hand when Lily was born.
The man who cried when he first heard her heartbeat.
The man who promised me he would protect us.
Then that image disappeared.
Because the man standing in front of me now had spent the last year protecting secrets.
Not us.
“I’m going to talk to my mother,” he said.
My heart stopped for half a second.
“You know about the message.””
His face went blank.
“What message?””
I watched him.
A small mistake.
A tiny pause.
But enough.
“You already know.””
He looked away.
“Emma…”
“You knew she contacted me.””
He didn’t deny it.
That was worse.
I stepped back.
“Go.””
He looked surprised.
“What?””
“Go talk to your mother.””
I pointed toward the door.
“Maybe she’ll finally tell you the truth.””
He stared at me.
“What does that mean?””
I walked back to Lily.
“It means you’re not the only person hiding things anymore.””
I waited until Daniel left.
Then I kissed Lily’s forehead.
Her temperature had finally dropped below 103.
Not normal.
But better.
“I’ll be back soon,” I whispered.
I hated leaving her.
Every part of me wanted to stay.
But something inside me knew I needed answers.
Because whatever Evelyn knew was important.
And if there was proof…
I needed it.
Not for revenge.
For Lily.
Evelyn was waiting outside the house.
Not inside.
Outside.
That alone told me something was different.
The woman who had always acted powerful looked smaller standing beneath the porch light.
Older.
Tired.
“You came,” she said.
I crossed my arms.
“Why did you ask me to come alone?””
She looked toward the street.
“Because if Daniel knew I was talking to you, he would take it.””
“Take what?””
She reached into her purse.
For a moment, I thought she might pull out something that would change everything.
She pulled out a small envelope.
My heart started pounding.
“What is that?””
“Insurance.””
I stared at her.
“Against your own son?””
Her eyes flickered.
“Against what he has become.””
I didn’t move.
“Explain.””
Evelyn looked down.
“I made a mistake.””
I almost laughed.
“Your mistake was making my daughter clean with a 104-degree fever?””
Her face tightened.
“No.””
The answer surprised me.
“I was wrong about many things. But what happened today…”
She swallowed.
“I didn’t think it would go that far.””
I stared at her.
“You’re telling me you didn’t think forcing a sick child to clean was wrong?””
She looked ashamed.
For the first time since I had known her, Evelyn looked ashamed.
“I thought Daniel would stop me.””
The words hit me.
“What?””
She looked away.
“I thought he would finally choose Lily.””
My stomach twisted.
“Why would you say that?””
She opened the envelope.
Inside were printed photographs.
My hands went cold before I even touched them.
The first photo showed Lily sitting alone at the kitchen table.
She looked scared.
The second showed a red mark around her wrist.
The third showed Evelyn standing over her.
But the photos weren’t the worst part.
There were dates.
Multiple dates.
Weeks apart.
My breathing became uneven.
“How long?””
Evelyn’s voice was barely above a whisper.
“Four months.””
I looked up.
“Four months?””
“She became afraid of him.””
I froze.
“Him?””
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“Daniel.””
The world seemed to stop.
“No.””
I shook my head.
“No. Daniel would never hurt Lily.””
Evelyn looked at me.
“You still believe that?””
I hated that question.
Because I wanted to.
I wanted to defend him.
I wanted to say she was lying.
But the images in my hand said otherwise.
“What happened?”” I whispered.
Evelyn sat down on the porch steps.
“When Sarah came into his life, Daniel changed.””
I stayed standing.
“Sarah.””
Evelyn nodded.
“He started staying away from home. He became angry whenever Lily asked questions.””
“What questions?””
She looked at me.
“The kind children ask when they know something is wrong.””
My chest tightened.
“What did he do?””
Evelyn’s hands trembled.
“He told Lily that if she behaved badly, you might leave.””
I felt sick.
“He used me to scare her?””
“Yes.””
I looked at the photos again.
“He made her afraid of losing me.””
Evelyn nodded.
“He wanted her quiet.””
A cold feeling moved through my body.
“Why?””
She hesitated.
Then she said the words I wasn’t prepared to hear.
“Because Sarah didn’t want a child in the picture.””
The night suddenly felt colder.
I whispered:
“What?””
Evelyn looked at me.
“Sarah wanted Daniel to leave you.””
My fingers tightened around the envelope.
“But Lily?””
Evelyn’s voice broke.
“Sarah said Daniel could start over if he didn’t have responsibilities holding him back.””
I couldn’t breathe.
A person I had never met had decided my daughter was an inconvenience.
And my husband had listened.
I looked at Evelyn.
“Why are you telling me this now?””
She looked away.
“Because today I saw Lily collapse.””
A tear slipped down her cheek.
“And I realized I had become the kind of person I always hated.””
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then my phone vibrated.
I looked down.
A new message.
From Daniel.
My blood turned cold.
*Where are you?*
Another message appeared immediately.
*Mom told me everything.*
I stared at the screen.
Then the third message came.
*You need to come back before Lily hears the truth about her father.*
I looked at Evelyn.
She had gone pale.
“What did you tell him?””
She shook her head.
“I didn’t.””
“Then how does he know?””
Neither of us answered.
Because the truth was suddenly obvious.
Someone else was watching.
Someone else knew.
And then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
At first, there was only silence.
Then a woman’s voice whispered:
“Emma…”
My blood froze.
Because I recognized the voice.
It was the same name that appeared on Daniel’s phone.
Sarah.
“I know you have the photos,” she said.
I gripped the phone tighter.
“How?””
Her breathing was shaky.
Then she said something that made my entire body go numb.
“Because I’m the one who took them.””
A pause.
May you like
Then, quietly:
“And Emma… there’s something Daniel did that Evelyn doesn’t even know about.””
