Chapter 4: The Woman Who Held The Missing Pieces
For a few seconds, I couldn’t speak.
The night around me seemed to disappear.
The sound of cars passing on the street.
The wind moving through the trees.
Even Evelyn’s worried voice asking what was happening.
Everything faded.
Because the woman on the phone had just said the one thing I never expected.
*She had taken the photos.*
The woman I thought was the enemy.
The woman I believed was helping destroy my family.
She had evidence against my husband.
“Sarah?”” I finally whispered.
“Yes.””
Her voice sounded nothing like I imagined.
I expected confidence.
Arrogance.
Someone who had stolen my husband and felt proud of it.
Instead, she sounded exhausted.
Scared.
“Why do you have those pictures?””
There was a long silence.
Then she answered.
“Because I started noticing things.””
I looked at Evelyn.
She was staring at me, confused.
“Things like what?””
Sarah took a shaky breath.
“Like how Daniel changed every time he came home from your house.””
My fingers tightened around the phone.
“You were seeing him.””
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised me.
No excuses.
No pretending.
“Yes, I was.””
My chest hurt.
Even after everything, hearing it still felt like being punched.
“But you need to understand something, Emma.””
I almost laughed.
“Understand something?””
My voice rose.
“You were having an affair with my husband.””
“Yes.””
“And now you want me to understand?””
“Yes.””
The certainty in her voice stopped me.
“Because I was wrong about him.””
The words hung between us.
Evelyn stepped closer.
“What is she saying?””
I ignored her.
“What did Daniel do?””
Sarah went quiet.
Then she said:
“He lied to both of us.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What does that mean?””
“It means Daniel never planned to leave you.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
“He told me he was trapped in a bad marriage. He told me you were unstable. He told me you were keeping Lily from him.””
My hands shook.
I looked toward the hospital in the distance.
Toward my daughter.
“My husband told you those things?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because he wanted me to believe he was the victim.””
I closed my eyes.
The picture was becoming clearer.
Daniel had built different versions of himself for different people.
The devoted father.
The exhausted husband.
The unhappy man.
The innocent son.
But none of them were real.
“What did you find?”” I asked.
Sarah’s voice became quieter.
“Records.””
“What kind of records?””
“Messages. Payments. Conversations.””
“With who?””
A pause.
Then:
“An attorney.””
My heart started pounding.
“Why would Daniel be talking to an attorney?””
Sarah answered slowly.
“Because he was preparing for custody.””
The word hit me harder than I expected.
Custody.
My daughter.
My baby.
“He was planning to take Lily?””
“Yes.””
I looked at Evelyn.
Her face had gone pale.
“What?”” she mouthed.
I covered the phone slightly.
“Daniel was planning to take Lily.””
Evelyn stepped backward.
“No.””
“You knew he was hurting her.””
“I knew he was angry,” she whispered.
“I didn’t know he was planning that.””
I turned back to the phone.
“Sarah, where are you?””
“I’m not far.””
“Meet me.””
Silence.
“Emma—”
“Meet me.””
I didn’t know why I trusted her.
Maybe I didn’t.
Maybe I just knew I needed answers.
“I need everything you have.””
Sarah hesitated.
“Daniel can’t know.””
I looked at the hospital.
At the building where my daughter was sleeping.
“He already knows too much.””
Twenty minutes later, Sarah sat across from me in a quiet coffee shop near the hospital.
I had expected someone glamorous.
Someone who matched the image I created in my head.
Instead, she looked ordinary.
A tired woman with messy hair and dark circles under her eyes.
She placed a folder on the table.
“I know you hate me.””
I didn’t respond.
Because she was right.
I did.
But hatred had become complicated.
“You destroyed my family.””
Sarah looked down.
“I know.””
“You hurt me.””
“I know.””
“You hurt Lily.””
Her face changed.
That was the first time I saw real emotion from her.
“I never wanted that.””
I leaned forward.
“But you still stayed.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because I was stupid.””
I didn’t expect that answer.
She opened the folder.
“I believed him.””
Inside were printed screenshots.
Messages between Daniel and Sarah.
The first one made my hands go cold.
*Daniel: She’s too emotional. She’ll never understand.*
Another:
*Daniel: Once Lily is older, things will be easier.*
Another:
*Daniel: I just need time to fix the situation.*
I looked up.
“What situation?””
Sarah swallowed.
“Your marriage.””
I turned another page.
Then another.
And there it was.
A conversation with someone named Michael.
A lawyer.
The words were clear.
*Client wishes to establish primary custody based on concerns about mother’s behavior.*
My vision blurred.
“He was building a case against me.””
Sarah nodded.
“He was collecting anything he could use.””
“Anything?””
“Yes.””
She looked ashamed.
“He asked me to record conversations with you.””
My heart stopped.
“He wanted you to spy on me?””
“Yes.””
I pushed the folder away.
The betrayal felt endless.
Every time I thought I had reached the bottom, there was another secret underneath.
“Did you?””
Sarah looked away.
“At first.””
The answer hurt.
“Then?””
“Then I saw what he was doing.””
“What changed?””
She pointed to one of the photos.
A picture of Lily with a red mark on her wrist.
“That.””
I stared at it.
“I took that photo.””
“Why?””
“Because Daniel told me Lily was clumsy.””
My jaw tightened.
“And you didn’t believe him?””
“No.””
Sarah looked at me.
“Because I saw him grab her arm.””
The world went quiet.
“Daniel?””
She nodded.
“Not today. Before.””
My hands went cold.
“What happened?””
Sarah looked at the table.
“He was angry because Lily told him she missed you.””
I couldn’t breathe.
“She told him that?””
“Yes.””
“And then?””
Sarah’s voice cracked.
“He grabbed her and told her she needed to stop making problems.””
I covered my mouth.
The image of my daughter’s scared face flashed through my mind.
“She’s six.””
“I know.””
“She’s just six.””
“I know.””
The tears came before I could stop them.
Not because I was weak.
Because my daughter had been carrying fear alone.
And I hadn’t seen it.
Sarah reached into the folder and pulled out a small flash drive.
“I copied everything.””
“What’s on it?””
“Messages. Audio files. Documents.””
I stared at it.
“Why give this to me?””
She looked at me.
“Because I realized something.””
“What?””
“I thought I was helping Daniel escape a marriage he hated.””
Her voice broke.
“But I was actually helping him hide what he was doing to his daughter.””
The silence between us was heavy.
Then my phone rang.
Daniel.
I stared at the screen.
Sarah looked terrified.
“Don’t answer.””
I frowned.
“Why?””
“Because if he knows you have this…”
She didn’t finish.
She didn’t have to.
I answered.
“Hello?””
Daniel’s voice came immediately.
“Emma.””
His tone was calm.
Too calm.
“Where are you?””
I didn’t answer.
“Emma, listen to me.””
I stayed silent.
“I know you’re with Sarah.””
My blood ran cold.
I looked at Sarah.
She looked terrified.
“How?””
Daniel continued.
“Because she always does this.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“Does what?””
“Tries to destroy people when she doesn’t get what she wants.””
Sarah whispered:
“He’s lying.””
Daniel kept talking.
“Emma, come back to the hospital.””
I said nothing.
“Please.””
The word sounded strange coming from him.
Almost sincere.
Almost like the old Daniel.
Then his voice changed.
Slightly.
“You don’t know what Sarah is capable of.””
I looked at the woman across from me.
Then at the flash drive.
Then back at the phone.
And I realized something.
Daniel wasn’t afraid that Sarah would hurt me.
He was afraid that Sarah would tell me the truth.
“Daniel,” I said.
“Yes?””
“Did you plan to take Lily away from me?””
The silence was immediate.
Not confusion.
Not shock.
Silence.
A guilty silence.
Finally, he whispered:
“Emma…”
I closed my eyes.
“Answer me.””
Another pause.
Then Daniel said:
“I was trying to protect her.””
My heart shattered.
“Protect her from who?””
His answer came quietly.
And it was the last thing I expected.
“From you.””
I looked at Sarah.
She looked just as shocked as I was.
Because even she hadn’t heard that lie before.
Then Daniel added:
“And if you don’t come back right now…”
A chill ran down my spine.
“Your daughter might never forgive you.””
The call ended.
I stared at the dark screen.
Then Sarah slowly reached into her bag.
She pulled out one final piece of paper.
“I didn’t want to show you this.””
My fingers trembled as I took it.
“What is it?””
Sarah looked at me with tears in her eyes.
“It’s the real reason Daniel wanted custody.””
I unfolded the paper.
And the name written at the bottom made my blood turn cold.
Because it wasn’t Daniel’s name.
It wasn’t Sarah’s.
It was Lily’s.
May you like
And beside my daughter’s name was a sentence that changed everything:
*CONFIDENTIAL ADOPTION TRANSFER DOCUMENTS.*
