Chapter 8: The Man Who Was Supposed To Be Dead

The voice coming from the security monitor didn’t make sense.

It couldn’t.

My mind refused to accept what my ears had heard.

Thomas.

The name echoed through the room.

The name of my husband.

The man I had buried three years ago.

The man whose photograph still sat beside my bed.

The man whose empty chair I still found myself looking at during breakfast.

Daniel stared at the monitor.

His face had gone completely pale.

“Dad?””

Nobody answered.

The figure outside the bedroom camera stood perfectly still.

The image was grainy.

The lighting was poor.

But there was something about the way he stood.

The slight tilt of his head.

The familiar posture.

The way he kept one hand in his pocket.

I knew that posture.

I knew that person.

“No,” I whispered.

Richard stepped toward the monitor.

His face had lost all confidence.

All anger.

All certainty.

“That’s impossible.””

Claire looked at him.

“You know it is.””

Richard turned sharply.

“What did you do?””

Claire shook her head.

“I didn’t do anything.””

“You knew.””

“Knew what?””

“That he was alive.””

The room became silent.

Daniel looked between them.

“What are you talking about?””

Richard didn’t answer.

His eyes remained fixed on the screen.

Then the figure outside moved.

The camera feed cut.

The lights returned to normal.

The alarm stopped.

And suddenly, the mansion became quiet again.

Too quiet.

Daniel looked at me.

“Mom…”

I couldn’t speak.

My entire life had just changed in a single moment.

Again.

A few minutes later, we heard the front door open.

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Then footsteps entered the hallway.

Slow.

Familiar.

The sound traveled closer.

Until a man appeared in the doorway.

Older.

Thinner.

His hair almost completely gray.

But alive.

Thomas Whitmore looked at me.

And the first thing he said was:

“Margaret.””

My knees weakened.

Daniel grabbed my arm.

“Dad?””

Thomas looked at his son.

A thousand emotions crossed his face.

Regret.

Pain.

Love.

Then he looked back at me.

“I’m sorry.””

Those two words broke something inside me.

Not because they answered anything.

Because they didn’t.

I had spent three years mourning him.

Three years believing I would never hear his voice again.

And now he stood in front of me.

Alive.

“Thomas…”

My voice barely worked.

“How?””

He looked down.

“I know you have questions.””

I laughed softly.

A broken sound.

“Questions?””

I stepped closer.

“You disappeared.””

“I know.””

“You let me bury you.””

“I know.””

“You let our son believe his father was dead.””

Thomas closed his eyes.

“I know.””

Daniel moved forward.

“How could you do that?””

Thomas looked at him.

And for the first time, I saw how much pain was between them.

“I thought I was protecting you.””

“By leaving?””

“By staying away.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You have no idea what you did to us.””

Thomas looked down.

“I do.””

“No, you don’t.””

Daniel’s voice cracked.

“I watched Mom fall apart.””

Thomas looked at me.

His eyes filled with regret.

“I know.””

“And you were alive?””

“I was trying to keep her alive.””

Daniel froze.

“What does that mean?””

Thomas looked toward Claire.

Everyone followed his gaze.

Claire’s expression was unreadable.

Then Thomas said:

“It means I knew she would come back.””

Claire’s face hardened.

“You always thought you were smarter than everyone.””

Thomas nodded.

“Maybe I was wrong about that.””

Richard stepped forward.

“Thomas.””

His voice was full of anger.

“You let me believe you were dead.””

Thomas looked at his brother.

“I needed you to believe it.””

“Why?””

“Because you were the only person Claire didn’t suspect.””

Richard stared.

“That’s why you sent me the notebook?””

“Yes.””

“And the letters?””

“Yes.””

I looked between them.

“Someone explain what is happening.””

Thomas looked at me.

“You deserve the truth.””

He walked toward the table.

The same table where Claire had placed papers meant to steal my future.

“The night I supposedly died, I discovered the financial transfers.””

He looked at Claire.

“She had been moving money for years.””

Claire crossed her arms.

“And you think you were innocent?””

Thomas’s expression changed.

“I made mistakes.””

The words surprised me.

Daniel looked at him.

“What mistakes?””

Thomas sat down slowly.

“I trusted the wrong people.””

Claire laughed.

“That’s convenient.””

Thomas ignored her.

“When I discovered what was happening, I confronted her.””

“You threatened me,” Claire said.

“I told you I would report you.””

“And ruin everything.””

Thomas looked at her.

“You ruined it yourself.””

Claire’s eyes narrowed.

“You never understood.””

“No.””

Thomas shook his head.

“I understood perfectly.””

He looked at me.

“She didn’t want the money because she needed it.””

“Then why?””

Thomas looked back at Claire.

“Because she believed she deserved it.””

Claire smiled bitterly.

“And I was wrong?””

Nobody answered.

Thomas continued.

“After I confronted her, someone attacked me.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“Someone attacked you?””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Thomas looked toward Richard.

His brother looked away.

“I never saw the person’s face.””

My heart sank.

“But you knew someone wanted you gone.””

“Yes.””

Thomas nodded.

“That’s why I disappeared.””

I stared at him.

“You could have told me.””

“I wanted to.””

“Then why didn’t you?””

Thomas looked at me.

“Because the person helping Claire had access to everything.””

I felt cold.

“Everything?””

“The house. The accounts. Your medical information.””

Daniel looked at the medicine bottle still sitting on the table.

“So the medicine…”

Thomas nodded.

“She started testing how much control she had.””

Claire stepped forward.

“You’re blaming me for everything.””

Thomas looked at her.

“I’m blaming you for what you did.””

Then he looked at Jonathan.

“And him for helping.””

Jonathan’s expression changed.

“You have no evidence.””

Thomas smiled slightly.

“I have more than you think.””

Jonathan became still.

Thomas reached inside his jacket and removed a small device.

“A recording.””

Claire’s face changed.

Thomas pressed a button.

A voice filled the room.

Claire’s voice.

Clear.

Cold.

“Once Margaret signs, the house is mine.””

Another voice.

Jonathan.

“And Daniel?””

Claire.

“He’ll understand eventually.””

The recording stopped.

Silence.

Daniel looked at Claire.

There was no anger on his face anymore.

Only disappointment.

“That was you.””

Claire stared at him.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

He stepped back.

“Don’t.””

For the first time, Claire looked truly afraid.

“I loved you.””

Daniel shook his head.

“I don’t know who you are.””

Those words hurt her.

I could see it.

For a second, she wasn’t the woman who planned everything.

She was just someone who realized she had lost the one person who still believed in her.

Then the moment passed.

Her face hardened again.

“This isn’t over.””

Thomas looked at her.

“Yes, it is.””

Claire smiled.

“No.””

She reached into her bag.

Everyone reacted instantly.

Daniel moved toward her.

Jonathan stepped back.

But Claire didn’t pull out a weapon.

She pulled out a phone.

“I made sure I had insurance.””

She tapped the screen.

Thomas looked at it.

Then froze.

“What did you do?””

Claire smiled.

“Remember the medical reports?””

My stomach tightened.

“What reports?””

Claire looked at me.

“The ones proving you are unstable.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“You forged them.””

“Yes.””

She smiled.

“But people already received copies.””

Thomas’s face changed.

“Who?””

Claire looked at him.

“Everyone who matters.””

The room went silent.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A man spoke.

“Mrs. Whitmore?””

“Yes?””

“This is Dr. Lawson.””

My heart stopped.

The doctor.

“I need to discuss something important.””

I looked at Claire.

She was watching me.

Smiling.

The doctor continued.

“We received additional medical documents concerning your condition.””

I gripped the phone.

“What documents?””

A pause.

Then:

“Documents suggesting you may no longer be capable of managing your own affairs.””

The room spun.

Claire had lost control of the house.

But she had already prepared the next battle.

Thomas looked at me.

And for the first time since returning, he looked afraid.

Because he knew something I didn’t.

“What is it?”” I whispered.

Thomas stepped closer.

“Margaret…”

“What?””

He looked at Claire.

Then at the phone.

Then back at me.

“The documents she sent aren’t fake.””

My blood ran cold.

“What?””

Thomas lowered his voice.

“Because someone really did sign them.””

I stared at him.

“Who?””

Nobody spoke.

May you like

Then Thomas said the words that shattered everything.

“Margaret… it was you.””
