Thinking

Chapter 3: The Son Who Didn’t Believe Me

The folder landed on the dining table with a quiet sound.

But to me, it felt louder than thunder.

I stared at it.

A plain brown folder.

Nothing about it looked dangerous.

Nothing about it suggested that it could divide a family.

But I had learned something over the last few days.

The most dangerous things often looked ordinary.

Daniel pulled out a chair.

“Mom, sit down.””

I looked at him.

The little boy who used to run into my arms after falling off his bicycle.

The teenager who promised he would take care of me when he grew up.

The man I spent my entire life protecting.

“Why do I feel like I’m the one being called into a meeting?”” I asked.

Daniel forced a small smile.

“Don’t make it sound so serious.””

Claire moved behind him and placed her hand gently on his shoulder.

That gesture should have comforted me.

Instead, it made me feel like I was watching two people standing on the same side of a battle.

“Mom,” Daniel continued, “Claire told me about what happened today.””

I already knew where this was going.

“What exactly did she tell you?””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“She said you went through your old documents and accused her of stealing.””

My mouth opened slightly.

“That is not what happened.””

Claire sighed softly.

“Daniel, I told you not to bring this up tonight.””

Then she looked at me.

“I didn’t want to embarrass Margaret.””

Embarrass me.

The word burned.

“I am sitting right here,” I said.

Claire lowered her eyes.

“I know.””

The performance was perfect.

A wounded woman pretending to protect someone who had attacked her.

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

“Mom, please. I don’t want an argument.””

“Neither do I.””

“Then why are you fighting Claire?””

I stared at him.

“Because something is wrong.””

Daniel looked away.

“What does that mean?””

“It means my medicine was changed.””

His expression shifted.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“You’re still thinking about that?””

“Yes.””

“Mom, Claire already explained.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“Explained what?””

“That the pharmacy made a mistake.””

I froze.

“The pharmacy?””

Daniel nodded.

“She called them.””

I looked at Claire.

“You called my pharmacy?””

Claire smiled sadly.

“I was trying to help.””

“When?””

“This morning.””

That was impossible.

I had called before breakfast.

Before Claire had left my room.

Before she knew I had discovered anything.

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Daniel,” I said slowly, “did she tell you what the pharmacist said?””

He hesitated.

“She said they confirmed everything was fine.””

I stared at Claire.

She didn’t look away.

That frightened me more than anything.

“You’re lying.””

The words came out before I could stop them.

The room went silent.

Daniel stood up.

“Mom.””

“No.””

I pointed toward the folder.

“You brought papers into my house because she told you I was confused. But she has been making decisions without me. She changed my medicine. She searched my study.””

Claire’s face turned pale.

“Daniel, this is exactly what I was afraid of.””

“What?””

“She’s becoming suspicious of everyone.””

I turned toward him.

“Do you believe that?””

Daniel didn’t answer immediately.

And that hurt more than if he had said yes.

“Mom,” he said quietly, “you’ve been through a lot since Dad died.””

I felt something break inside me.

“Are you saying I’m imagining this?””

“No.””

“But you think I am.””

Daniel sat back down.

“I think you’re scared.””

“Yes.””

I nodded.

“I am scared.””

My voice became softer.

“Because I think the person standing next to me is trying to take away my choices.””

Claire covered her mouth.

“Daniel…”

The disappointment in her voice was carefully measured.

Like she wanted him to feel responsible for my accusations.

Daniel looked at me.

“Mom, Claire has done nothing but help you.””

I almost laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was impossible.

“Do you know what she told me last night?””

Claire immediately interrupted.

“Margaret, don’t.””

Daniel looked between us.

“What did she tell you?””

I looked directly at him.

“She said once I signed the papers, nothing could stop her.””

Claire’s face changed.

“What papers?””

“You know exactly what papers.””

Daniel turned toward his wife.

“Claire?””

She looked shocked.

“Daniel, I have no idea what she’s talking about.””

Then she reached for his hand.

“I think this is exactly why we need to have the conversation.””

“What conversation?”” I asked.

Claire looked at me.

“The conversation about getting you professional help.””

The room stopped.

“Professional help?””

Daniel spoke quickly.

“Mom, nobody is trying to hurt you.””

“Then why are you talking about help like I’m incapable?””

“Because we’re worried.””

“Who is we?””

Daniel looked down.

Claire answered.

“We.””

That one word hurt.

Because I realized Daniel had already started using her language.

That night, after dinner, Daniel went upstairs with Claire to talk privately.

I remained in the living room alone.

The fireplace crackled.

The same fireplace where Thomas and I used to sit every Christmas morning.

The same room where Daniel opened his first baseball glove.

I looked around my home.

My memories were everywhere.

And suddenly, I wondered how long it would take before those memories belonged to someone else.

My phone buzzed.

I looked down.

A message from Evelyn.

*Margaret, I checked the property records. Call me immediately.*

My heart raced.

I stepped into the hallway and called her.

She answered on the first ring.

“Margaret, listen carefully.””

“What did you find?””

“There was an attempt to file paperwork connected to your estate.””

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“An attempt?””

“Yes.””

“By who?””

A pause.

Then:

“Claire Whitmore.””

I closed my eyes.

The worst part was hearing it confirmed.

Not suspected.

Not feared.

Confirmed.

“What kind of paperwork?””

“Power of attorney documents.””

My breath caught.

“What does that mean?””

“It would give someone else authority to make financial and medical decisions on your behalf.””

I looked toward the staircase.

Toward the room where Daniel and Claire were talking.

“Did Daniel sign anything?””

“No.””

I felt a small amount of relief.

“But Margaret…”

“What?””

“The documents were prepared.””

“By who?””

“That’s what concerns me.””

I waited.

Evelyn lowered her voice.

“The attorney listed on the documents was not me.””

“Who was it?””

She gave me a name.

A name I had never heard before.

“Jonathan Reeves.””

I frowned.

“Who is that?””

“I don’t know.””

The answer frightened me.

Because Evelyn knew every legal professional who had worked with my family.

Someone new had entered my life without my permission.

Someone had been arranging my future behind my back.

Then I heard footsteps.

I turned.

Daniel stood at the end of the hallway.

His face was unreadable.

“Who are you talking to?””

I quickly ended the call.

“No one.””

Daniel looked at my phone.

“That didn’t sound like no one.””

I said nothing.

He walked closer.

“Mom, what’s happening?””

I looked at him.

For a moment, I saw the little boy again.

I wanted to tell him everything.

I wanted him to choose me.

But then I remembered him sitting at the table.

Believing Claire.

Questioning me.

“I need you to answer one thing,” I said.

“What?””

“Did you know Claire was trying to get power of attorney?””

Daniel froze.

That was my answer.

“You knew.””

His face changed.

“Mom, it’s not what you think.””

“Then tell me what it is.””

He rubbed his face.

“She came to me because she’s worried.””

“She went around me.””

“She didn’t want to upset you.””

“She wanted control.””

“No!””

Daniel’s voice rose.

The sound shocked both of us.

He immediately lowered it.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at him.

“I don’t recognize you anymore.””

His expression softened.

“Mom…”

“No.””

My voice trembled.

“I spent my whole life believing you would stand beside me.””

“I am standing beside you.””

I looked toward the stairs.

“At least one of us is.””

Daniel followed my gaze.

For a moment, doubt crossed his face.

A tiny crack.

Then Claire appeared.

“Everything okay?””

Her timing was perfect.

Too perfect.

Daniel stepped back.

“Yeah.””

But his voice was different.

Uncertain.

Claire looked at me.

Then at Daniel.

And I knew she noticed.

She noticed the doubt.

The hesitation.

The fact that for one second, Daniel almost questioned her.

Later that night, I locked my bedroom door again.

I placed the medicine bottle on the table.

I placed the documents from my study beside it.

Proof.

Everything I had.

But as I reached for my phone, I noticed something strange.

My screen was already open.

A message draft was waiting.

I hadn’t written it.

Three words appeared in the text box.

*I know everything.*

My blood ran cold.

Someone had used my phone.

Someone had been inside my room.

Then another message appeared.

Not from my phone.

From the hallway.

A voice whispered through the darkness.

“Margaret…”

I froze.

Because I recognized the voice.

May you like

It was Claire.

And she was standing right outside my locked bedroom door.
