Chapter 5: The Envelope With My Name On It

Daniel stared at the message on my phone.

Neither of us spoke.

The room seemed to shrink around us.

Finally, he whispered, “How does she know?””

I looked at him.

“She knows about the cameras.””

His face lost what little color remained.

“Mom…”

“She knows everything.””

Daniel took the phone from my hand and read the message again.

His jaw tightened.

“She has been lying to me.””

I didn’t answer.

Not because I disagreed.

Because hearing him say it himself was almost painful.

For days, I had wanted him to see what I saw.

Now that he was beginning to understand, I realized how much I wished he never had to.

“What did you find in her room?”” I asked.

Daniel looked down at the envelope.

“I found it inside the back of her closet.””

He turned it over.

My name was written across the front in black ink.

*MARGARET WHITMORE*

Underneath it, in smaller letters:

*To be opened only after the transfer is complete.*

My stomach twisted.

“The transfer of what?””

“I don’t know.””

“Open it.””

Daniel hesitated.

“Mom, maybe we should wait for Evelyn.””

“No.””

I reached for the envelope.

“We don't have time.””

He handed it to me.

The paper was thick and expensive.

The seal had already been broken.

Someone had opened it before.

I pulled out the contents.

The first page was a photocopy of a document.

My eyes moved across the lines.

Then stopped.

Property transfer.

My property.

My house.

I could barely breathe.

“Daniel…”

He stepped closer.

“What?””

I handed him the page.

His eyes scanned it.

Then his expression collapsed.

“This says…”

“Yes.””

“It says the property is being transferred.””

“To Claire.””

He shook his head.

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“This can’t be real.””

I pointed toward the bottom of the page.

“There’s a signature.””

He looked at it.

Then looked at me.

“That’s your signature.””

I stared at the ink.

For a second, the entire room went silent.

It did look like mine.

The curve of the M.

The long sweep of the g.

The sharp final stroke of the t.

But I had never signed it.

“This isn’t my signature.””

Daniel swallowed.

“I know your handwriting.””

“So do I.””

I took the page back.

“Someone forged it.””

A second document slipped out of the envelope.

Then another.

Bank authorization forms.

Medical records requests.

A draft power of attorney.

A letter addressed to an attorney.

Every page had one thing in common.

My name.

My private information.

My assets.

My medical history.

My accounts.

My home.

Someone had been building a complete picture of my life.

And Claire had it all.

Daniel sank into a chair.

“How long?””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“How long has she been planning this?””

“I don’t know.””

He covered his face with both hands.

“I brought her into this house.””

I sat across from him.

“You brought your wife home.””

“And she did this to you.””

“To us.””

He looked up.

I saw tears in his eyes.

“She told me you were changing.””

“I am changing.””

“No,” he said quietly.

“She told me you were becoming impossible. That you were forgetting things. That you were angry all the time.””

“Was I?””

“No.””

He looked at the papers.

“I thought you were grieving.””

“I was.””

“So was Dad. So were we.””

He shook his head.

“I should have listened.””

I reached across the table.

“You’re listening now.””

Daniel took my hand.

But before either of us could speak again, footsteps sounded in the hallway.

We both froze.

Claire.

Daniel immediately stood.

“I’ll put these away.””

“No.””

I grabbed the documents.

“We need to hide them.””

“Where?””

I thought quickly.

“The study.””

He nodded.

We moved toward the door.

Then stopped.

The footsteps had disappeared.

I opened the door a fraction.

The hallway was empty.

“Go,” I whispered.

Daniel slipped into the study.

I followed.

We closed the door.

The old security monitor still glowed in the corner.

I looked at the screen.

The hallway camera showed nothing.

The front door was still closed.

Claire was somewhere inside the mansion.

Then the office camera flickered.

Daniel looked up.

“What?””

“There.””

A shadow passed the office doorway.

Then the camera angle shifted.

Claire appeared on screen.

She was holding her phone.

Calling someone.

Daniel stared.

“We can hear her from the monitor?””

“The audio works.””

I turned the volume up.

Claire’s voice came through faintly.

“I told you she found it.””

A man's voice answered.

“You said the cameras were disabled.””

“They were supposed to be.””

Daniel looked at me.

The voice was unmistakable.

The same man from the recording.

The unknown lawyer.

Claire paced across the office.

“No. We move tonight.””

The man said something we couldn’t make out.

Claire stopped.

“I don't care what the risk is.””

She looked toward the camera.

Then said:

“She has to sign.””

Daniel’s fists tightened.

“Who is that man?””

I shook my head.

“I don't know.””

Claire continued.

“And if she doesn’t…”

She paused.

Then smiled.

“We use the medical route.””

Daniel stared at the screen.

“The medical route?””

Claire nodded as if the man were standing in front of her.

“She’s already taking medication. We document enough incidents, and the doctors will question her capacity.””

My stomach turned.

She wasn’t just trying to take my money.

She was trying to make me look incapable of making decisions.

She was building a case.

“She wants them to declare you incompetent,” Daniel whispered.

I nodded.

“That’s what she’s been doing.””

Suddenly, the pieces fit.

The comments about my memory.

The changed medicine.

The questions about my confusion.

The legal documents.

The constant insistence that I needed help.

It wasn’t care.

It was preparation.

Daniel reached for my arm.

“We have to call the police.””

“Not yet.””

“Mom.””

“We need to know who that man is.””

“Why?””

“Because if he’s part of this, he may have access to more than we know.””

Daniel looked at me.

“You’re thinking about what’s in those papers.””

“Yes.””

“And what else?””

“The missing envelope.””

He frowned.

“The one from your desk?””

I nodded.

“It contained my financial information.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“What if she already transferred something?””

I felt a chill.

“We need to find out.””

He reached for his phone.

“I'll call the bank.””

“No.””

He looked confused.

“Why not?””

“Your phone may not be safe.””

“What?””

I pointed toward the documents.

“She accessed my phone last night.””

Daniel stared at me.

“What are you saying?””

“I’m saying she may have access to yours too.””

He slowly put his phone away.

Then looked at the door.

“What do we do?””

I thought of Thomas.

He had always said that when fear took over, the first thing you lost was your ability to think.

So I forced myself to breathe.

“We leave the house.””

Daniel shook his head.

“She’ll know.””

“Let her.””

“We need somewhere safe.””

“There is one place.””

He looked at me.

“Where?””

I gave him an address.

My old guest cottage.

It sat several miles away on property I had bought decades ago.

Almost no one knew about it.

Not Claire.

Not her friends.

Not even most of Daniel’s friends.

Daniel nodded.

“We go now.””

But before we could move, the study door handle turned.

Slowly.

Daniel’s eyes widened.

The handle stopped.

Someone was outside.

Then Claire’s voice came through the wood.

“Daniel?””

He looked at me.

I shook my head.

Neither of us answered.

“Daniel, I know you’re in there.””

Her voice was calm.

Almost pleasant.

Then she added:

“I know you have the envelope.””

Daniel looked down at the papers in his hand.

Claire laughed softly from the other side of the door.

“You really shouldn’t have opened it.””

The handle moved again.

Harder this time.

Daniel stepped in front of me.

“Claire, leave the door alone.””

Silence.

Then:

“Do you really want to do this?””

Daniel’s voice shook.

“Do what?””

“Choose her over me.””

My chest tightened.

Claire continued.

“I’m your wife.””

Daniel said nothing.

“You promised me a future.””

Still nothing.

Then her voice became colder.

“And I promised myself I would never leave this house with nothing.””

Daniel looked at me.

I could see the realization settle into his eyes.

She had never wanted to take care of me.

She wanted what I had.

The door handle suddenly stopped moving.

We heard footsteps retreat.

Daniel exhaled.

“She’s leaving.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“What?””

“She’s not leaving.””

“How do you know?””

I looked at the security monitor.

Claire wasn’t walking toward the front door.

She was going downstairs.

Toward the garage.

Then the camera showed something that made my heart pound.

A second person entered through the rear entrance.

The unknown man.

Daniel stared at the screen.

“He’s inside.””

I nodded.

The man removed his coat.

Then looked directly at the camera.

As if he knew we were watching.

He lifted his phone.

A second later, Daniel’s phone vibrated.

He pulled it out despite everything I had said.

One message.

One photograph.

It was a picture of us inside the study.

Taken moments earlier.

Underneath it were six words:

*You should have trusted your wife.*

Daniel looked at me.

Then at the locked door.

May you like

And somewhere downstairs, Claire began turning off the lights.

One by one.
