Chapter 7: The Man Who Knew the Truth

Richard Whitmore stood in the doorway with rain dripping from the shoulders of his dark coat.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Claire looked at him as though she had seen a ghost.

Jonathan was the first to recover.

“Who the hell are you?””

Richard ignored him.

His eyes stayed on Claire.

“I told you twenty years ago that this family would eventually pay for what happened.””

Claire’s lips parted.

“You’re not supposed to be here.””

Richard gave a bitter smile.

“That sounds more like a confession than a welcome.””

Daniel stepped toward him.

“Richard?””

The older man finally looked at him.

“You’re Daniel.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“I remember you from when I was a kid.””

“You were six the last time I saw you.””

Richard’s gaze moved to me.

“And you, Margaret.””

My throat tightened.

“Richard…”

He walked into the room.

For a moment, I saw Thomas in his face.

The same gray eyes.

The same crooked smile.

The same habit of standing with his hands folded behind his back when he was angry.

“Where have you been?”” I whispered.

Richard looked at Claire.

“Trying to stay alive long enough to tell the truth.””

Claire took a step backward.

“Daniel, don't listen to him.””

Richard laughed once.

“Still doing that, I see.””

Daniel looked between them.

“What does he know?””

Claire answered too quickly.

“Nothing.””

Richard turned toward her.

“I know about the forged documents.””

Claire went still.

“I know about the bank accounts.””

Her eyes widened.

“I know about the recordings.””

Jonathan stepped forward.

“You need to leave.””

Richard finally looked at him.

“And you must be Jonathan Reeves.””

Jonathan’s expression hardened.

“How do you know my name?””

“Because I spent the last six months learning everything about you.””

The room became silent.

Richard reached into his coat and removed a thick envelope.

“I know where you went to law school.””

He placed a photograph on the table.

“I know the firms you worked for.””

Another photograph.

“And I know you were disbarred from practicing in another state before changing your name.””

Jonathan’s face went pale.

Daniel stared at the photographs.

“Mom…”

I shook my head.

“I didn’t know any of this.””

Richard looked at me.

“I know.””

Claire suddenly stepped forward.

“This is ridiculous.””

Richard turned toward her.

“No, Claire. Ridiculous was believing nobody would ever notice.””

She folded her arms.

“You’re obsessed with the past.””

“I’m obsessed with the truth.””

“You disappeared.””

“Yes.””

“You abandoned the family.””

Richard’s expression hardened.

“Because your husband helped destroy it.””

Daniel looked at him.

“My father?””

Richard nodded.

“Thomas?””

I felt the room tilt.

“What are you saying?””

Richard looked at me.

“Your husband’s death was not the only secret this family buried.””

My heart began pounding.

“Richard, what does Thomas have to do with Claire?””

“Everything.””

Claire shook her head violently.

“Stop.””

Richard ignored her.

“You remember how Thomas changed near the end, Margaret.””

I swallowed.

“He became distant.””

“He did.””

“He stopped sleeping.””

“He was scared.””

I stared at him.

“Scared of what?””

Richard looked at Claire.

“Her.””

Claire’s face went white.

Daniel turned toward his wife.

“Why would Dad be afraid of Claire?””

“Because,” Richard said, “Thomas discovered what she was doing before anyone else did.””

Claire shook her head.

“You’re lying.””

Richard removed a small black notebook from his coat.

“Then why did Thomas send this to me?””

I stared at the notebook.

I recognized it immediately.

Thomas’s handwriting covered the front.

My hands began to tremble.

“Where did you get that?””

“He mailed it to me three days before he died.””

I stepped forward.

“You had it all this time?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I didn't know who I could trust.””

Claire laughed bitterly.

“And now you think you can walk in here and save her?””

Richard looked at me.

“I came because I finally know what she was trying to finish.””

Daniel’s face tightened.

“What was she trying to finish?””

Richard opened the notebook.

“Thomas discovered that someone had been moving money through a series of accounts.””

He turned a page.

“The money was coming from the Whitmore family holdings.””

Daniel stared.

“How much?””

Richard named the amount.

Daniel staggered backward.

“That’s impossible.””

“It happened over several years.””

I looked at Claire.

She said nothing.

Daniel turned toward her.

“Is this true?””

Claire crossed her arms.

“You believe him?””

“I asked you a question.””

She looked away.

Richard answered for her.

“About two months before Thomas died, he confronted her.””

Daniel’s face went blank.

“Claire knew Dad?””

“More than you realize.””

I looked at Claire.

“You knew my husband before you met Daniel.””

Her mouth tightened.

“Of course I knew him.””

“Why didn't you tell us?””

“Because it was irrelevant.””

Richard shook his head.

“No.””

He opened another page.

“It was the beginning.””

Daniel stepped toward Claire.

“You knew my father before we met?””

Claire’s eyes filled with anger.

“I met him once.””

Richard smiled.

“Three times.””

Claire glared at him.

“Why are you doing this?””

“Because Margaret deserves to know why you came into this family.””

Claire suddenly pointed toward me.

“She had everything!””

Her voice echoed through the room.

“She had the house. The money. Thomas.

Daniel. Everyone.””

Daniel stared at her.

“So this was revenge?””

“No.””

Claire’s breathing became unsteady.

“It was supposed to be compensation.””

“Compensation for what?””

Claire looked at Richard.

He answered.

“Her mother worked for Thomas’s family.””

I frowned.

“What?””

Richard nodded.

“Her mother was the Whitmores’ housekeeper for almost thirty years.””

Claire’s eyes flashed.

“She was treated like she was invisible.””

“That does not explain this,” I said.

“No,” Richard replied.

“But it explains where the obsession started.””

Claire stepped toward me.

“You have no idea what people like your family did.””

I looked at her.

“My family?””

She laughed.

“Thomas promised my mother money when she was sick.””

Richard interrupted.

“He did pay her.””

“Not enough!””

Claire’s voice broke.

“She died believing he had forgotten her.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You knew about this?””

“I knew about her mother.””

“But you married me anyway.””

Claire looked at him.

“I loved you.””

“Did you?””

The question silenced her.

Daniel’s eyes filled with tears.

“Or did you marry me because you wanted to get close to my family?””

Claire didn’t answer.

And that silence told us more than any confession could.

I looked at Richard.

“What happened after Thomas discovered the money transfers?””

“He confronted Claire.””

“Then what?””

Richard turned to Daniel.

“Your father wanted to report the theft.””

Claire’s face hardened.

“Stop.””

“He was planning to change the will too.””

I felt my breath catch.

“The will?””

Richard nodded.

“Thomas intended to leave the estate to Daniel, but he also planned to create a trust protecting Margaret’s home and medical care.””

I stared at him.

“He never told me.””

“He was going to.””

Richard looked down.

“But he never got the chance.””

The room seemed to lose all sound.

“Richard…”

He hesitated.

“There is one more thing.””

“What?””

“Thomas believed his death might not have been natural.””

Daniel looked at him sharply.

“What are you saying?””

“I’m saying Thomas was afraid someone was trying to poison him.””

Claire recoiled.

“That’s insane.””

Richard opened the notebook to the final page.

Thomas’s handwriting was darker there, rushed and uneven.

Richard read quietly.

“I know the pills are being changed. I know someone is watching the house. If anything happens to me, protect Margaret from Claire.””

My knees nearly gave out.

Daniel caught my arm.

“No.””

Claire shook her head.

“You can’t prove that.””

Richard closed the notebook.

“Maybe not from this alone.””

Jonathan suddenly reached for the envelope on the table.

Daniel grabbed his wrist.

“Don’t touch that.””

Jonathan pulled away.

“You have no idea what you're getting into.””

Daniel stepped between him and me.

“I know exactly what I'm getting into.””

Claire stared at Daniel.

“Please.””

It was the first time she had sounded frightened.

“Daniel, please listen to me.””

He looked at her.

“I listened to you for months.””

“You don't understand.””

“I understand enough.””

Claire’s face crumpled.

Then she whispered:

“Your father wasn’t innocent either.””

I looked at her.

“What does that mean?””

She stared at Richard.

Richard’s face changed.

“What did you tell them?””

Claire smiled through her tears.

“The truth.””

Richard stepped forward.

“Don’t.””

Claire turned to me.

“Ask him about the night Thomas died.””

Richard went completely still.

Daniel looked at him.

“What happened that night?””

Nobody answered.

I looked from Richard to Claire.

Then to the notebook.

“What happened?””

Richard’s jaw tightened.

Finally, he said:

“Thomas called me that night.””

“What did he say?””

“He told me someone had entered the house.””

My heart raced.

“Who?””

Richard looked directly at Claire.

“Your son’s wife wasn’t the only person he was afraid of.””

Daniel stared at him.

“Then who else was in this house?””

Richard hesitated.

Then the front security alarm suddenly screamed.

Every light in the mansion turned red.

The doors locked automatically.

And from the old security monitor, a new camera feed appeared.

A figure stood outside my bedroom.

A man.

Holding the same medicine bottle I had found days earlier.

Then he looked directly into the camera and said:

“Margaret, your brother-in-law has been lying to you.””

Richard’s face went pale.

Because he recognized the voice.

May you like

And whispered one name.

“Thomas.””
