Chapter 9: The Child They Hid From Everyone
I stared at the photograph until my eyes started to hurt.
Two babies.
Same hospital.
Same birthday.
Same mother.
My mind refused to accept what I was seeing.
Because if Thomas was telling the truth, then the entire story of Olivia’s life had been built on another lie.
Not one secret.
Not one betrayal.
A lifetime of them.
I looked up at him.
“Who is the other child?””
Thomas didn’t answer immediately.
That scared me more than anything.
People who have good news don’t hesitate.
People who have terrible truths do.
“Thomas.””
He took a slow breath.
“The other baby was a boy.””
My fingers tightened around the photograph.
“A boy?””
He nodded.
“Sarah gave birth to twins.””
The room seemed to tilt.
“Twins?””
“Yes.””
I looked back down.
Two newborn babies.
Two lives.
Two children connected by the same hidden story.
“But Sarah only raised Olivia.””
Thomas looked away.
“No.””
My heart stopped.
“What do you mean?””
“Sarah didn’t raise either of them.””
The words felt like ice.
“What?””
He looked at me.
“Margaret separated them.””
I couldn’t speak.
For six years, I had believed Olivia’s life was complicated because of one secret.
Now I realized the secret was much bigger.
Someone had taken two children.
Not one.
“Where is the boy?””
Thomas’s expression changed.
“I don’t know.””
“You don’t know?””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“You contacted me. You brought me here. You showed me this.””
I held up the photograph.
“You know something.””
He closed his eyes.
“I know what happened that night.””
“Then tell me.””
His voice became quieter.
“Sarah gave birth late at night. Richard was there. Adrian was there.””
He paused.
“And Margaret arrived afterward.””
My stomach tightened.
“What did she do?””
Thomas looked at the photograph.
“She looked at the babies and immediately asked one question.””
“What question?””
He looked at me.
“Which one is the heir?””
I felt sick.
Because that question told me everything.
To Margaret, they weren’t babies.
They were pieces on a board.
Thomas continued.
“Adrian realized something was wrong. He knew Margaret wasn’t interested in the children. She was interested in what they represented.””
“The inheritance.””
“Yes.””
I looked away.
The mansion.
The trust.
The company shares.
Everything.
“The boy,” I whispered.
“What happened to him?””
Thomas didn’t answer.
I felt anger rising.
“Why does nobody know?””
“Because Margaret made sure nobody could find out.””
“How?””
He looked at the floor.
“She changed the records.””
The same thing.
Again.
Documents.
Names.
The truth rewritten by someone with power.
“Who was listed as the mother?””
Thomas hesitated.
“Sarah.””
My heart sank.
“And the father?””
He looked at me.
“Adrian.””
“Then why wasn’t the boy found?””
Thomas’s face tightened.
“Because the records were altered again.””
My hands went cold.
“What does that mean?””
“It means someone created a second identity.””
I stared at him.
“For the baby?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Thomas looked at me.
“Because one child could inherit.””
A pause.
“But two children could threaten everything.””
The words echoed.
I thought about Olivia.
The way Margaret looked at her.
Not like a granddaughter.
Like a problem.
I suddenly understood.
She wasn’t trying to remove Olivia because she hated her.
She was afraid of her.
Afraid of what Olivia could become if she ever learned the truth.
My phone buzzed.
I looked down.
A message.
From Daniel.
*Where are you? Please answer.*
I stared at it.
A part of me wanted to call him.
Another part remembered every secret.
Every omission.
Every time I had been the last person to know.
Thomas noticed.
“Your husband?””
I nodded.
“He needs to know.””
Thomas looked concerned.
“Be careful.””
“Why?””
“Because Daniel may not be the person you think he is.””
The words angered me.
“No.””
Thomas looked surprised.
“No?””
I shook my head.
“I don’t know what Daniel hid from me.””
I looked at the photograph.
“But I know he loves Olivia.””
Thomas didn’t argue.
That somehow made it worse.
When I returned to the mansion, the lights were still on.
Everyone was waiting.
Daniel was standing near the entrance.
The second he saw me, he walked forward.
“Emily.””
I stepped out of the car.
“You knew about the twins.””
His face changed.
Not confusion.
Shock.
“What?””
I held up the photograph.
His expression collapsed.
“Where did you get that?””
The question was enough.
I stopped.
“You knew.””
“No.””
“Then why did you recognize it?””
Daniel looked at the picture.
His hands started shaking.
“I’ve seen it before.””
My heart sank.
“Where?””
He didn’t answer.
“Daniel.””
He swallowed.
“My father showed it to me.””
The anger returned.
“Your father?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“Years ago.””
“How many?””
He looked at the ground.
“Before Olivia was born.””
I laughed softly.
Not because it was funny.
Because I was exhausted.
“So everyone knew.””
“No.””
“Everyone except me.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“I didn’t know the whole story.””
“But you knew there was another child.””
He didn’t deny it.
And that was enough.
I turned away.
“Emily, please.””
I stopped.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
His voice cracked.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
“Of losing you.””
I looked back.
“You should have been afraid of losing the truth.””
He looked broken.
“I thought if I protected Olivia, everything would be okay.””
I stared at him.
“But you weren’t protecting her.””
The words hurt him.
“You were protecting yourself.””
Daniel looked like he wanted to argue.
But he couldn’t.
Because maybe he knew I was right.
Sarah came outside.
She looked at the photograph.
Then at me.
“You found out.””
I nodded.
“Twins.””
Her face crumbled.
For a moment, she looked like the woman she must have been years ago.
A mother.
A woman who lost everything.
“Yes.””
Her voice was barely a whisper.
“I had two babies.””
I stepped closer.
“Where is he?””
She looked away.
“I don’t know.””
The answer broke my heart.
“You don’t know where your son is?””
Tears filled her eyes.
“I searched.””
“Then why didn’t you find him?””
Her voice broke.
“Because every path led back to Margaret.””
Nobody spoke.
Then the front door opened.
Margaret walked outside.
She had heard everything.
“You should stop digging.””
I turned toward her.
“Why?””
She looked at me.
“Because some truths destroy more than lies.””
“No.””
I held the photograph.
“Your lies destroyed my family.””
Margaret looked at Olivia through the car window.
Her expression changed.
For the first time, I saw something unexpected.
Regret.
“I never wanted this.””
Sarah laughed bitterly.
“You never wanted what?””
Margaret looked at her.
“I never wanted anyone hurt.””
“Then why did you do it?””
Silence.
Finally, Margaret whispered:
“Because I was told if I didn’t…”
She stopped.
Everyone stared.
“If you didn’t what?””
Margaret’s eyes moved toward the road.
Toward the darkness beyond the gates.
Then she said:
“Someone would kill the children.””
Nobody moved.
“What?””
Margaret looked at me.
“I didn’t take the babies because I wanted power.””
Her voice shook.
“I took them because someone threatened their lives.””
Sarah stepped forward.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“I don’t care what you believe.””
Margaret looked at Daniel.
“I tried to protect you.””
Daniel stared at her.
“From who?””
Margaret didn’t answer.
Because suddenly headlights appeared beyond the gate.
A car.
Slowly approaching.
Everyone turned.
The vehicle stopped.
The door opened.
A man stepped out.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
Nobody spoke.
Sarah covered her mouth.
Daniel froze.
Margaret whispered:
“No.””
I looked at the man.
And I knew.
Before anyone said his name.
Adrian.
The man everyone believed was dead.
The man who was supposed to be gone.
He walked toward us slowly.
His eyes moved to Sarah.
Then Daniel.
Then Olivia.
And finally to me.
“I’m sorry I’m late.””
Nobody breathed.
Then Adrian looked at Margaret.
And said:
“But I’m not the person you should be afraid of.””
He reached into his coat.
Pulled out a document.
And placed it in my hand.
The title was visible.
*Guardianship Transfer Agreement.*
My heart stopped.
Because beneath Adrian’s name…
was another signature.
May you like
A signature I recognized.
Daniel’s.
