Chapter 8: The Man Who Was Never Supposed To Return

“Your daughter’s father may still be alive.””

The words stayed in the air long after the call ended.

Nobody moved.

Nobody even seemed to breathe.

The phone was still pressed against my ear, but the line had already gone dead.

I stared at the screen.

Unknown number.

No name.

No trace.

Just another piece of the truth arriving at the exact moment I thought I couldn’t handle one more surprise.

Then Sarah stood up.

Slowly.

Her face had lost all color.

“No.””

The word came out like a prayer.

Daniel looked at her.

“Sarah?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

Her hands started trembling.

“That’s impossible.””

I looked at her.

“You knew?””

She looked at me.

Not with guilt.

With fear.

“I thought he was dead.””

My chest tightened.

“You thought?””

She closed her eyes.

“I saw what happened.””

The room became silent.

Victor watched her carefully.

“What did you see?””

Sarah looked at him.

“I saw Adrian’s car.””

Nobody spoke.

“I saw the crash.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“You said he disappeared.””

Sarah’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because that’s what I was told.””

The sentence hit me.

“What does that mean?””

Sarah looked at Margaret.

And Margaret looked away.

Again.

Always Margaret.

My anger returned.

“Enough.””

My voice echoed through the mansion.

“Everyone keeps saying pieces of things. Everyone keeps protecting someone.””

I looked at Daniel.

“My daughter has spent her entire life surrounded by secrets.””

Then at Sarah.

“You lost her.””

Then Margaret.

“You took her.””

My voice shook.

“And somehow, every single person in this room knew more about Olivia’s life than I did.””

Nobody answered.

I turned toward the front door.

“I’m taking my daughter and leaving.””

Daniel immediately moved.

“Emily.””

I held up my hand.

“No.””

He stopped.

“I need to think.””

“Please.””

I looked at him.

“Please don’t ask me to trust you when I’m still finding out what you hid.””

That hurt him.

I saw it.

But I couldn’t take those words back.

I walked toward the SUV.

Then Sarah spoke.

“Wait.””

I stopped.

She came closer.

“I know what it feels like to believe everyone betrayed you.””

I turned.

Her eyes were full of pain.

“But if you leave now, Margaret wins.””

My expression hardened.

“This isn’t about winning.””

“No.””

Sarah shook her head.

“It’s about Olivia.””

That stopped me.

She looked toward the car.

“Someone tried to erase her before she was even born.””

My hands tightened.

“And you think staying here fixes that?””

“No.””

Sarah looked at Margaret.

“But finding the truth might.””

Margaret suddenly laughed quietly.

Everyone looked at her.

It wasn’t a happy laugh.

It was exhausted.

“You all think the truth is going to save you.””

She looked at Sarah.

“You think telling Emily everything will make you innocent?””

Sarah’s face changed.

Margaret continued.

“You think Richard was some hero?””

She shook her head.

“He wasn’t.””

Mr. Harrison frowned.

“Be careful.””

“No.””

Margaret stepped forward.

“For years, everyone has blamed me.””

Her eyes moved around the room.

“But nobody asks why I did what I did.””

Daniel stared at her.

“Because you hurt people.””

Margaret looked at him.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“From what?””

She hesitated.

That hesitation told me there was still more.

“I was trying to protect this family from Adrian.””

Sarah immediately responded.

“Adrian loved Olivia.””

Margaret looked at her.

“You don’t know everything.””

“Neither do you.””

The two women stared at each other.

And for the first time, I wondered if there was another layer beneath all of this.

A truth hidden beneath the truth.

My phone buzzed.

A message.

Same number.

This time, there was an address.

No explanation.

Just:

*Come alone if you want to know what happened to Adrian.*

I showed no one.

At least not immediately.

Because something inside me told me that if I wanted answers, I couldn’t keep waiting for people who had spent years hiding them.

I needed to find them myself.

“Emily?””

Daniel noticed my expression.

I put my phone away.

“I need to go.””

His face changed.

“Where?””

“Somewhere I can get answers.””

“I’m coming with you.””

“No.””

He stopped.

“Emily.””

“I need to do this alone.””

Sarah looked at me.

“You shouldn’t.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because whoever sent that message knows exactly what they’re doing.””

“I know.””

“Then why go?””

I looked toward Olivia.

“Because my daughter deserves the truth.””

Nobody argued with that.

Thirty minutes later, I was driving through the city.

The rain had slowed.

But my mind was louder than any storm.

The address led me to an old warehouse near the edge of town.

A place that looked abandoned.

Exactly the kind of place where secrets were buried.

I parked.

For a moment, I just sat there.

Thinking about Olivia.

Thinking about the day she was born.

Thinking about every moment I had spent wondering why Margaret treated her differently.

I always thought it was because Margaret was cruel.

Now I knew.

It was because Olivia was a threat.

Not because of who she was.

Because of what she represented.

I stepped out.

The warehouse door opened before I reached it.

A man stood inside.

Older.

Tired.

But familiar.

Not from memory.

From the photograph.

I stopped.

Because I knew that face.

Not Adrian.

Someone else.

Someone who had been there.

“You’re Emily.””

I didn’t answer.

“Who are you?””

The man looked around nervously.

“My name is Thomas.””

“Why did you contact me?””

He looked at the door behind me.

“Because I waited too long.””

My heart started beating faster.

“Waited for what?””

“To tell the truth.””

I stepped closer.

“About Adrian?””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

“Is he alive?””

Thomas looked down.

Then whispered:

“Yes.””

The word hit me harder than I expected.

I had spent hours hearing about a dead man.

A man who shaped my daughter’s life without being there.

A man whose existence had been erased.

And now…

He might be alive.

“Where is he?””

Thomas didn’t answer.

Instead, he handed me a small envelope.

“He wanted you to have this if the truth ever came out.””

I stared at it.

“From Adrian?””

“Yes.””

“How long have you had it?””

Thomas looked away.

“Six years.””

My anger rose.

“Six years?””

“I was afraid.””

“Everyone is always afraid.””

The words came out bitter.

Thomas accepted them.

“I know.””

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter.

The handwriting was unfamiliar.

But the first line made my hands shake.

*Emily, if you are reading this, then Sarah found Olivia before I could.*

I stopped.

My eyes moved lower.

*I know you don’t know me. I know you probably hate me.*

I swallowed.

*But there is something you must understand. I never abandoned my daughter.*

The next sentence made my breath catch.

*I was taken away from her.*

I looked at Thomas.

“What happened?””

He looked down.

“Adrian discovered the financial fraud.””

I continued reading.

*Margaret didn’t just want control of the company. She wanted control of Olivia’s inheritance before Olivia was old enough to claim it.*

My hands shook.

*When I refused to sign over my rights, she made sure I disappeared.*

I looked up.

“Where is he?””

Thomas was quiet.

Then:

“He’s been in hiding.””

“Why?””

“Because he believed Margaret would hurt Olivia if he came back.””

I stared at him.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“It will.””

He looked at the letter.

“There’s something Adrian discovered before he disappeared.””

“What?””

Thomas hesitated.

Then said:

“Olivia wasn’t the only child Margaret tried to erase.””

I froze.

“What?””

Thomas looked toward the dark end of the warehouse.

“There was another baby.””

My blood ran cold.

“No.””

“Yes.””

I shook my head.

“That’s impossible.””

Thomas looked at me.

“Is it?””

The question haunted me.

Because after everything I had learned…

Nothing felt impossible anymore.

He handed me one final photograph.

A baby.

A hospital bracelet.

Another name.

I looked at it.

And my heart stopped.

Because the baby in the photograph…

had the same birthday as Olivia.

The same hospital.

The same mother.

Sarah.

I looked at Thomas.

“What am I looking at?””

His voice was barely a whisper.

“The reason Margaret was willing to destroy everyone.””

I stared at the photograph.

Two babies.

One mother.

One secret.

And one impossible question.

If Olivia wasn’t the only child Sarah had that night…

Then who was the other baby?

Thomas looked at me and said:

“Emily, you need to prepare yourself.””

I swallowed.

“For what?””

May you like

His answer was quiet.

“Because Olivia has a sibling.””
