Chapter 6: The Man In The Photograph
The photograph sat on the table between us.
A small piece of paper.
A frozen moment.
A piece of the past that had just torn apart everything I believed about my family.
I stared at it.
Then I looked at Daniel.
Then back at the photograph.
The man standing beside Sarah in the picture was smiling.
His hand rested gently on her shoulder.
Sarah looked younger.
Happier.
And between them was a hospital room.
A newborn baby wrapped in a white blanket.
Olivia.
My daughter.
My hands went cold.
“Daniel…”
My voice barely worked.
“Who is that?””
He didn’t answer.
And somehow, that silence hurt more than any confession.
“Daniel, who is the man in this photograph?””
He looked at Sarah.
Sarah looked away.
Margaret closed her eyes.
All three of them knew.
I was the only person who didn’t.
Victor leaned back slightly.
“Interesting, isn’t it?””
I turned toward him.
“Who are you?””
He smiled.
“The person who knows the truth.””
“That’s not an answer.””
“No,” he said.
“It’s the answer you’re going to get tonight.””
I hated how calm he was.
Like he had been waiting years for this exact moment.
Like my family falling apart was just entertainment.
I picked up the photograph.
“Tell me.””
Daniel finally spoke.
“Emily…”
I looked at him.
“Don’t say my name like that.””
His face changed.
“Like what?””
“Like you’re sorry.””
The words came out sharper than I intended.
But I couldn’t stop.
“I spent six years believing I knew my daughter’s story.””
My voice shook.
“I believed the day she was born. I believed the hospital records. I believed everything you told me.””
Daniel looked devastated.
“I never lied about loving her.””
I swallowed.
“That wasn’t my question.””
The silence was brutal.
Sarah stepped forward.
“Emily, Daniel didn’t know everything.””
I looked at her.
“But he knew something.””
She didn’t answer.
That was enough.
I turned back to Daniel.
“Who is he?””
Daniel looked at the photograph.
Then at Sarah.
Then finally at me.
“His name is Adrian.””
The name meant nothing.
Until Victor spoke.
“Adrian Whitmore.””
The room changed.
Because I knew that last name.
Everyone knew that last name.
Whitmore.
The family name carved into the gates outside.
The name attached to the mansion.
The name Olivia had inherited.
I looked at Daniel.
“Your family?””
He nodded slowly.
“Adrian was my cousin.””
Margaret immediately interrupted.
“He was not family.””
Victor laughed.
“Still pretending?””
Margaret glared at him.
“Leave.””
Victor ignored her.
“Adrian was Richard’s older brother’s son.””
I looked at Mr. Harrison.
He didn’t deny it.
“Why have I never heard of him?””
Nobody answered.
Victor smiled.
“Because Margaret made sure nobody did.””
Daniel turned toward his mother.
“Mom?””
Margaret’s expression hardened.
“Adrian was dangerous.””
Sarah shook her head.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
Sarah’s eyes were full of anger.
“He was inconvenient.””
Margaret looked at her.
“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””
“I know exactly what happened.””
Sarah pointed at the photograph.
“Adrian was there when Olivia was born because he was the only person who believed me.””
My chest tightened.
I looked at the picture again.
The man who wasn’t Daniel.
The man beside my daughter’s mother.
“Was he her father?””
Nobody spoke.
I felt the answer before anyone said it.
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
The word destroyed the room.
I couldn’t move.
Couldn’t think.
Couldn’t breathe.
“Yes?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Emily…”
“No.””
I stepped backward.
“No.””
My eyes burned.
“Say that again.””
Daniel looked broken.
“Olivia’s biological father is Adrian.””
The rain outside became louder.
Or maybe I was just finally hearing it again.
I looked toward the SUV.
Olivia was still inside.
Still waiting.
Still innocent.
She had no idea that adults were rewriting her entire life around her.
I whispered:
“Why?””
Nobody answered.
“Why would you let me believe she was yours?””
Daniel looked down.
“Because I raised her.””
“That’s not an answer.””
“It’s the truth.””
I shook my head.
“No. The truth is that you knew there was another man.””
“I didn’t know at first.””
“When did you know?””
Silence.
I stared at him.
“When?””
His eyes filled with pain.
“The day my father died.””
My heart sank.
“What?””
Daniel looked at the floor.
“Richard told me.””
I felt betrayed all over again.
“Your father knew?””
“Yes.””
“And you kept it from me?””
Daniel’s voice cracked.
“I was scared.””
I laughed bitterly.
“You were scared?””
“Yes.””
“Daniel, I was your wife.””
“I know.””
“I was raising a child who had an entire history hidden from her.””
“I know.””
“Then why?””
He had no answer.
And that hurt more than anything.
Victor stepped closer.
“Because the Whitmore family has always protected its image.””
I turned toward him.
“You don’t get to act like you’re better than them.””
His smile faded slightly.
“I’m not.””
At least that answer sounded honest.
I looked at Sarah.
“Where is Adrian now?””
The room went silent.
Sarah’s expression changed.
Pain.
Fear.
Something else.
“He’s gone.””
“Gone where?””
She looked at Margaret.
Margaret said nothing.
I stepped toward her.
“Where is Adrian?””
Margaret’s voice was quiet.
“He died.””
Sarah looked shocked.
“No.””
Margaret looked at her.
“You knew?””
Sarah shook her head.
“No.””
Victor spoke.
“He didn’t die naturally.””
Everyone froze.
Daniel turned toward him.
“What does that mean?””
Victor looked at Margaret.
“It means someone wanted him gone.””
Margaret’s face hardened.
“Don’t start this.””
“You know exactly what happened.””
“No one will believe you.””
Victor smiled.
“That’s why I brought evidence.””
He reached into his coat again.
This time, he pulled out a small USB drive.
Mr. Harrison immediately stepped forward.
“What is that?””
“Something Richard left behind.””
My heart stopped.
“Another letter?””
Victor shook his head.
“A recording.””
Daniel stared at him.
“From my father?””
“Yes.””
Nobody moved.
Victor placed the USB beside the photograph.
“Richard recorded everything because he knew he might not live long enough to fix it.””
Margaret’s voice became desperate.
“Turn that over.””
Victor looked at her.
“Why?””
“Because you don’t understand what you’re doing.””
“No.””
He smiled.
“I understand perfectly.””
He looked at me.
“Emily deserves to know why her daughter was given away.””
The words made my stomach twist.
“Given away?””
Sarah closed her eyes.
I looked at her.
“What does he mean?””
Sarah didn’t answer.
That terrified me.
Because Sarah had been fighting for Olivia all night.
But now?
She looked ashamed.
“Sarah.””
Her voice was barely audible.
“I thought I was protecting her.””
“Protecting who?””
She looked at Olivia.
Then at me.
“Both of you.””
I felt my anger rise.
“You don’t get to say that.””
“I know.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I know how it sounds.””
“Because you left her.””
“No.””
Sarah shook her head.
“I didn’t leave her.””
“Then what happened?””
She took a deep breath.
And finally said the sentence she had been avoiding all night.
“The day Olivia was born…”
Everyone became still.
“…I gave her to Daniel.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
Sarah looked at me.
“Because Adrian was already dead.””
The room went silent.
“And because Margaret told me if I didn’t disappear…”
She swallowed.
“She would make sure Olivia disappeared too.””
My blood ran cold.
I looked at Margaret.
“You threatened her?””
Margaret didn’t answer.
Sarah continued.
“She told me the only way Olivia would be safe was if everyone believed she was Daniel’s daughter.””
Daniel looked horrified.
“Mom…”
Margaret finally snapped.
“I was trying to save this family!””
“No.””
Sarah’s voice broke.
“You were trying to save yourself.””
Victor plugged the USB drive into the small recorder Mr. Harrison carried.
A click sounded.
Then static.
Everyone stood frozen.
A voice filled the room.
An old voice.
A voice I recognized from family videos.
Richard Whitmore.
“If you are hearing this…”
My hands tightened around the table.
“…then Margaret failed to keep the truth buried.””
Margaret closed her eyes.
Richard continued.
“And if Olivia is standing near you…”
The recording paused.
A crackle.
Then his voice became softer.
“Tell my granddaughter I never stopped looking for her.””
I felt tears burning my eyes.
Then Richard said something that made everyone in the room freeze.
“Because the child Margaret tried to erase…”
The recording continued.
“…is the only person who can expose what happened the night Adrian Whitmore died.””
The audio stopped.
Silence.
Then one final sound.
A message notification from the recorder.
A second file appeared.
The title was visible on the screen.
*THE NIGHT MARGARET CHANGED EVERYTHING*
Nobody spoke.
Because we all understood.
The next recording wasn’t about Olivia’s birth.
It was about a crime.
May you like
And the person standing closest to the truth…
was Margaret.
