Chapter 5: The Missing Birth Records
“They’re gone.””
Margaret’s words echoed through the mansion.
For a few seconds, nobody reacted.
Not because we didn’t understand.
Because we understood too much.
Birth records weren’t supposed to disappear.
Not accidentally.
Not after six years.
Not after someone had already spent years hiding a woman’s existence from her own family.
I stared at Margaret.
“What do you mean they’re gone?””
She looked at me, but for once, she didn’t have a sharp reply.
No insult.
No accusation.
No perfectly prepared explanation.
Only fear.
“The hospital records,” she said quietly.
“The original files. They’re missing.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“What hospital?””
Margaret looked at him.
“St. Catherine’s.””
His face changed.
I noticed.
“Why do you know that?””
He looked away.
That tiny movement hurt more than any confession.
“Daniel.””
He swallowed.
“I knew Sarah gave birth there.””
Sarah looked at him.
“You knew where I was?””
His silence answered.
Her expression broke.
“You knew?””
“No,” he said quickly.
“Not like that.””
“Then how?””
Daniel ran a hand through his hair.
“My father told me years ago that Sarah had a child.””
The room became completely still.
I felt like I was falling.
“You knew there was a child?””
He looked at me.
“But I didn’t know it was Olivia.””
I wanted to believe him.
I needed to.
But there was a question burning inside me.
“How could you not know?””
Daniel looked at the floor.
“Because everyone told me Sarah left.””
Sarah laughed sadly.
“Of course they did.””
Margaret stepped toward her.
“You were unstable.””
Sarah’s eyes turned cold.
“No. I was a mother who had her child taken away.””
“Enough.””
“No.””
Sarah’s voice shook with years of pain.
“You don’t get to say enough.””
Olivia stood quietly beside me.
Watching adults destroy a world she barely understood.
I immediately moved toward her.
“Sweetheart, go sit in the car for a minute, okay?””
She looked up at me.
“Are you mad?””
My heart cracked.
“No.””
I knelt down.
“I’m just trying to understand something.””
She looked at Sarah.
“Is she my grandma?””
The question hit everyone differently.
Sarah covered her mouth.
Daniel looked away.
Margaret went completely still.
I forced myself to breathe.
“I don’t know yet, sweetheart.””
Olivia nodded slowly.
Then she walked back toward the SUV.
Only when the door closed did I turn around again.
“Someone removed those records.””
Mr. Harrison nodded.
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Nobody answered.
I looked at Margaret.
Her eyes narrowed.
“You think it was me?””
“I think you know more than you’re saying.””
She looked offended.
But not surprised.
That was the difference.
“If I wanted those records destroyed,” she said, “why would I tell you they’re gone?””
Sarah stepped forward.
“Because you didn’t destroy them.””
Everyone looked at her.
Sarah’s face had changed.
She wasn’t just angry anymore.
She was thinking.
“You didn’t destroy them,” she repeated.
“You’re afraid because someone else did.””
Margaret stared at her.
For a moment, neither woman spoke.
And that silence revealed something.
They both knew there was another person involved.
“Who?”” I asked.
Sarah looked at the floor.
“I don’t know.””
Mr. Harrison opened the folder again.
“There may be another possibility.””
Daniel looked at him.
“What?””
“The records weren’t removed today.””
The attorney pulled out a document.
“They were altered years ago.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
He handed me the paper.
It was a hospital request form.
A correction request.
The date was six years earlier.
The year Olivia was born.
My hands shook as I read it.
*Request for amendment of maternal identification records.*
I looked up.
“Someone changed the mother’s name.””
Sarah nodded.
“Yes.””
My voice became quiet.
“Who?””
Mr. Harrison looked at Margaret.
Again.
Always Margaret.
Daniel turned toward his mother.
“No.””
Margaret looked away.
“Mom.””
She didn’t respond.
“Did you change them?””
Her face hardened.
“I did what I thought was necessary.””
Sarah let out a broken laugh.
“There it is.””
Daniel stared at his mother.
“You changed Olivia’s birth records?””
“I protected her.””
“Protected who?””
Margaret’s eyes moved toward Olivia.
And my blood ran cold.
“Protected Olivia.””
I stepped forward.
“You don’t get to use my daughter as an excuse.””
Margaret looked at me.
“You think you know everything.””
“No.””
I held her gaze.
“I know enough.””
The mansion felt smaller.
The walls felt like they were closing in.
For six years, I thought I knew my daughter’s story.
I thought I knew the day she was born.
The hospital.
The paperwork.
The family.
But now I was standing in a house full of people who had all known pieces of the truth.
Everyone except me.
I looked at Daniel.
“Why didn’t you ever tell me about Sarah?””
He looked devastated.
“Because I thought she was gone.””
“You thought.””
“Yes.””
“And you never questioned it?””
His silence was painful.
“I was twenty-five.””
“That was six years ago.””
“I know.””
“No, Daniel.””
My voice cracked.
“You don’t know.””
He looked at me.
“You had a sister who disappeared. You had a father who changed his will. You had a mother who hated my daughter.””
I pointed toward the mansion.
“And somehow, you never thought something was wrong?””
He had no answer.
Sarah looked away.
Because she knew.
She knew I wasn’t just angry about the secrets.
I was angry because Olivia had been surrounded by people who failed to protect her.
A sound came from the driveway.
A car door closing.
Everyone turned.
A man walked toward the mansion through the rain.
Mr. Harrison immediately stiffened.
“You shouldn’t be here.””
Daniel looked confused.
“Who is that?””
Nobody answered.
The man reached the porch.
He was in his fifties.
Expensive suit.
Calm expression.
Too calm.
He looked directly at Margaret.
“Looks like the truth finally caught up.””
Margaret’s face changed.
Not fear this time.
Recognition.
“Victor.””
The man smiled.
“Hello, Margaret.””
Sarah stepped backward.
“No.””
The man looked at her.
“It’s been a long time.””
Daniel looked between them.
“Who are you?””
Victor ignored him.
His eyes moved to me.
Then to Olivia sitting in the SUV.
And he smiled.
A smile that made my skin crawl.
“So that’s her.””
I immediately stepped in front of the car.
“Stay away from my daughter.””
Victor raised his hands.
“Relax.””
“I said stay away.””
He looked amused.
“You really don’t know, do you?””
I stared at him.
“Know what?””
He glanced at Margaret.
Then at Daniel.
Then back at me.
“Your daughter wasn’t hidden because of an inheritance.””
The rain poured harder.
Nobody spoke.
Victor continued.
“She was hidden because of who her real father is.””
My entire body froze.
Daniel’s face turned pale.
Sarah whispered:
“No…”
Victor smiled.
“Looks like nobody told you.””
I looked at Daniel.
My husband looked terrified.
And that was when I knew.
Whatever secret they had been hiding…
It wasn’t only about Olivia’s mother.
It was about Olivia’s father.
And the man standing in front of me was about to reveal something that could destroy my marriage forever.
Victor reached into his coat pocket.
Pulled out an old photograph.
And placed it on the table beside the deed.
“Ask Daniel who was standing beside Sarah the night Olivia was born.””
I looked down.
And my heart stopped.
May you like
Because the man in the photograph…
wasn’t Daniel.
