Chapter 9: The Betrayal Was Closer Than I Thought
"LET HER GO!""
Marcus's voice thundered through the darkness.
I felt a hand tighten around my shoulder.
Then another sound.
A struggle.
Something heavy struck the floor.
"Mrs. Whitmore, move!""
Daniel pulled me toward the back wall.
I reached for Eleanor.
"Where are you?""
"Mother! I'm here!""
I caught her hand.
The emergency lights flickered on.
Marcus was wrestling with a man near the entrance.
Richard was holding the metal box.
And Daniel stood between me and another intruder.
The man had his face partially covered.
But I recognized his watch.
A gold watch with a distinctive black face.
I'd seen it earlier that evening.
On Edward Langford.
"Edward?""
The man froze.
Then he pulled the covering from his face.
It was not Edward.
It was a younger man wearing an identical watch.
He looked at me with open hatred.
"Give me the tapes.""
I held the cassette bag against my chest.
"No.""
He stepped forward.
"You don't understand what's at stake.""
"I understand perfectly.""
He reached toward me.
Daniel stepped between us.
"Don't touch her.""
The man shoved him.
Daniel stumbled against the filing cabinet.
I screamed.
Marcus finally forced the first intruder to the ground.
The second man turned toward the exit.
Richard grabbed his jacket.
"You're not going anywhere!""
The man struck Richard across the face and ran up the stairs.
Marcus shouted into his radio.
"Lock down the perimeter! Two suspects moving toward the north entrance!""
Within seconds, the property was surrounded by security personnel.
The intruder Marcus had restrained was handcuffed.
I looked at Daniel.
"Are you hurt?""
He touched his shoulder.
"I'm fine.""
Eleanor hugged him.
"Thank you.""
Daniel nodded.
"Your father would have done the same.""
We gathered the documents.
This time, I didn't intend to leave anything behind.
Marcus arranged for the evidence to be transported directly to an independent legal office under continuous security supervision.
The police were contacted.
And the two men were handed over for questioning.
But I wasn't finished.
Not even close.
At 2:30 a.m., I sat in a conference room at the independent legal office.
Margaret was beside me.
Olivia had joined us by video call.
Eleanor sat across from me.
Daniel stood near the window.
The tapes had been copied.
The original recordings were secured.
The financial documents had been photographed and catalogued.
Margaret placed a thick folder on the table.
"Grace, we have a serious situation.""
I looked at her.
"What now?""
She opened the folder.
"The shell companies identified in Jonathan's records are still active. Two of them have received payments from Whitmore Hospitality within the last six months.""
"How much?""
"Approximately eleven million dollars.""
Olivia looked shocked.
"That money came from the property development division.""
I turned toward her.
"Who approved the transfers?""
She checked her notes.
"Charles Bennett.""
"And who authorized the supporting invoices?""
"His office.""
I nodded.
"Then we have a clear starting point.""
Margaret turned another page.
"There's more. The emergency succession agreement Eleanor signed appears to have been designed to transfer control of the family trust to Langford Capital.""
Eleanor closed her eyes.
"Can I undo it?""
Margaret looked at her.
"That depends on the original document and the circumstances under which you signed. We can challenge it, especially if there was material misrepresentation.""
"I was told it protected my inheritance.""
"I understand.""
Eleanor looked at me.
"Mother, I'm sorry.""
I reached across the table.
"We'll deal with the paperwork. You don't need to punish yourself forever.""
She began crying again.
Then Olivia spoke.
"Grace, there's something else you need to see.""
She shared her screen.
It was a spreadsheet containing several payments.
One entry was highlighted.
*$2,400,000 — CONSULTING SERVICES — APPROVED BY C. BENNETT.*
The recipient was a private company registered under an unfamiliar name.
I leaned closer.
"What is this company?""
Olivia enlarged the information.
"Whitmore Advisory Partners.""
I frowned.
"I've never heard of it.""
"That's what concerned me. The company was registered eight months ago.""
"Who owns it?""
Olivia opened the corporate registration.
A name appeared.
*RICHARD HALE.*
The room went silent.
I slowly turned toward the man sitting beside the door.
Richard looked as though someone had struck him.
"Mrs. Whitmore...""
I stared at him.
"Is this your company?""
He shook his head.
"No.""
Olivia spoke.
"The registration lists Richard as the director.""
Richard stood.
"That's impossible.""
Margaret turned the laptop toward him.
"Do you recognize this signature?""
He looked at it.
Then covered his mouth.
It was his signature.
But his expression suggested he had never seen the document.
"I didn't create this company.""
I watched him carefully.
"Then who did?""
Richard looked at me.
"Charles.""
"How do you know?""
He took a shaky breath.
"Because he asked me to sign several documents last year. He told me they were related to a hotel redevelopment project.""
"Did you read them?""
He lowered his eyes.
"No.""
I leaned back.
"Richard.""
"I know.""
"You're a general manager. You sign documents without reading them?""
He looked devastated.
"I trusted him.""
I almost laughed.
Everyone had trusted Charles.
That was how he had built his empire.
Not through intelligence alone.
Through other people's loyalty.
Richard sat down.
"Mrs. Whitmore, I swear I never received that money.""
Margaret examined the records.
"We'll need to establish whether the signature was used without authorization and whether the funds reached any account under your control.""
I nodded.
"Investigate everything. If Richard is innocent, I want that established. If he's involved, I want that established too.""
Richard looked at me.
"Thank you.""
"Don't thank me yet. Tell the truth, and let the evidence speak.""
He nodded.
Then he said something that changed the direction of the investigation.
"There's another person who knows what Charles was doing.""
"Who?""
Richard swallowed.
"The hotel's former assistant general manager.""
"Name?""
"Samuel Price.""
I searched my memory.
Samuel had left the company eleven months earlier.
His departure had been described as a voluntary resignation.
"Where is he now?""
Richard looked toward the floor.
"I don't know. But before he left, he told me something.""
"What?""
"He said Charles had arranged for several employees to be paid through a private payroll account. He believed they were being used to move money out of the company.""
Margaret made a note.
"Do you have any proof?""
Richard nodded slowly.
"Samuel gave me a flash drive.""
I stared at him.
"Where is it?""
He reached into his jacket.
Then stopped.
His expression changed.
"I left it in my office.""
I stood immediately.
"At the Grand Aurelia?""
"Yes.""
"Then we retrieve it.""
Richard shook his head.
"That's not possible.""
"Why?""
"Because Charles has someone working in the hotel's administration office. If he discovers the drive is missing, he'll know we've found the connection.""
I looked at Margaret.
"Can we secure the office?""
"With the appropriate authorities and preservation procedures, yes.""
I nodded.
"Then that's what we'll do.""
At 8:15 a.m., my phone rang.
It was an unknown number.
I answered.
"Grace Whitmore.""
A woman's voice responded.
"Mrs. Whitmore, my name is Helen Parker.""
I sat upright.
"Who?""
"Helen Parker. I was your husband's personal attorney.""
My heart began beating faster.
I glanced at Margaret.
She immediately started recording the call with my permission.
"Why are you calling me?""
"Because I received a message that the original archive had been opened.""
I froze.
"Who sent it?""
"I believe someone accessed my old legal files.""
"What files?""
"The emergency testamentary instructions prepared by Jonathan.""
I looked at Eleanor.
"Do you know about the letter he left?""
There was a pause.
"Yes.""
"Then you know about the family preservation trust?""
"Yes. But I need to tell you something important.""
"What?""
"Jonathan didn't simply leave instructions. He completed the transfer.""
I gripped the phone.
"That's impossible. The documents we found suggest the transfer required further verification.""
"That was the public procedure.""
"What does that mean?""
Helen lowered her voice.
"Jonathan arranged for the original controlling shares to be placed in a protected trust before he died. The transfer was witnessed and recorded privately.""
I stared at Margaret.
She mouthed the words:
Ask for proof.
"Can you prove it?""
"Yes. I have the original trust deed and the share certificates.""
"Where are they?""
"In a secure legal deposit box.""
"Can you bring them to me?""
"Not yet.""
My expression hardened.
"Why?""
"Because yesterday afternoon, someone tried to access the deposit box using a forged authorization.""
The room went silent.
"Who?""
Helen took a breath.
"Charles Bennett.""
I closed my eyes.
"Was he successful?""
"No. But he wasn't alone.""
"Who was with him?""
Another pause.
Then she said:
"Your daughter.""
I looked at Eleanor.
She shook her head violently.
"No. That's impossible.""
I put the phone on speaker.
"Helen, are you certain?""
"Yes. The person accompanying Charles used Eleanor's identity credentials.""
Eleanor stood.
"I didn't go there!""
Helen continued.
"The security recording shows someone who appears to be you.""
Eleanor began crying.
"Mother, I swear I didn't.""
I believed her.
But I also knew someone had used her identity.
And that meant the conspiracy was more organized than we had imagined.
I asked Helen to send the relevant records through Margaret's secure legal channel.
Then I ended the call.
Eleanor looked at me desperately.
"Mother, you believe me, don't you?""
I stood and held her shoulders.
"Yes.""
She broke down.
"Someone is using my name to steal from us.""
"I know.""
Margaret opened her laptop.
"We need to examine the access records immediately.""
But before she could continue, Olivia called.
Her voice was shaking.
"Grace, there's been a development at headquarters.""
"What happened?""
"Charles has called another emergency board meeting.""
"On what grounds?""
"He says he's discovered evidence that you used the black card to access restricted corporate systems without authorization.""
I stared at the phone.
"That's absurd.""
"He has filed a formal complaint.""
"Against whom?""
"Against you.""
I almost smiled.
"Of course he has.""
Olivia continued.
"He's also announced that the company will be holding a press conference at noon.""
"About what?""
She hesitated.
Then said:
"He's going to accuse you of attempting to steal your own company.""
I looked around the room.
The original recordings.
The forged succession agreement.
The financial transfers.
The attempted archive break-in.
Everything was finally beginning to connect.
And Charles was preparing to tell the world a different story.
I turned toward Margaret.
"Can we get the original trust deed before noon?""
She nodded.
"We'll try.""
I looked at Eleanor.
Then Daniel.
Then Richard.
"Good.""
I picked up Jonathan's photograph.
"Because at noon, Charles Bennett is going to learn that the company he thinks he stole was never his to take.""
But as I reached for my coat, another message appeared on my phone.
It came from Helen Parker.
*I FOUND THE ORIGINAL TRUST DEED. THERE IS ONE PROBLEM.*
A second message followed.
*THE SOLE BENEFICIARY IS NOT THE PERSON YOU THINK.*
I stared at the screen.
Then a third message appeared.
*JONATHAN CHANGED THE BENEFICIARY TWO DAYS BEFORE HE DIED.*
I slowly looked toward Eleanor.
She was watching me.
"Mother?""
I couldn't answer.
Because beneath the message was a photograph of the original trust deed.
And the name written beside the word BENEFICIARY was not Eleanor Whitmore.
It was not mine.
May you like
It was the name of the man Charles Bennett had spent thirty years trying to destroy.
*THOMAS REED.*
